Grooveshark app nowhere to be found, suddenly disappears from Google Play again

Grooveshark app nowhere to be found, suddenly disappears from Google Play again

Oh poor, poor Grooveshark. Not long after surprisingly making its way back to the Android Market Google Play store, the streaming service's Android application appears to be long gone yet again. If you'll recall, the music app was pulled from Mountain View's shop a few months back; this due to many claims from labels which suggested Grooveshark was allowing users to download tunes at no cost. Still, mum's the word on why the app has been nixed out of Google Play this time around -- especially after the service announced it had worked closely with the Android maker to get the official app reinstalled. For what it's worth, however, word on the internet is the application can still be installed via the Grooveshark site, but we'll have to leave that dicey decision up to you.

Flash for Android briefly returns to Google Play Store in UK, zombie-style

Adobe Flash logoAdobe was last seen burying mobile Flash and moving on with its life. Like the stars of George Romero movies, however, Flash is back to walk amongst the living -- if just temporarily. The developer tells the BBC that Flash for Android is back in the UK's Google Play Store for a short while after "strategic partners" pushed it into action, including the British broadcaster. While the link isn't explicitly confirmed, it's strongly implied that the BBC and others want a little more time to wean Android apps like iPlayer off of their Flash dependency and toward web technologies like HTML5. Adobe is quashing any hopes of a permanent revival with a disclaimer that there's no support for the download; any bugs will remain there forever. Those attached to their dearly departed plugin may still appreciate one last look before the code is once more put six feet under.

[Thanks, Kevin]

Apple, Google In Secret Talks To End The Patent Wars [REPORT]

Fresh off its huge $1.05 billion victory last week over Samsung in a blockbuster patent trial, Apple is now engaged in secret talks with Google to broker an end to the patent wars, according to Reuters.

Apple CEO Tim Cook and Google CEO Larry Page reportedly talked by phone last week and are planning to talk again in the next few weeks about their patent disputes on mobile devices. Reuters reports hearing from one source that the two companies are considering settling disputes over some of Android's more basic features.

Cook and Page have not reached any formal agreement yet, but they have agreed to continue talking. At the same time, lower-level employees at the two companies are said to be in talks as well.

Apple's former CEO Steve Jobs famously declared his intention to wage a "thermonuclear war" against Google for having ripped off the iPhone with its Android phones. However, Apple has largely avoided going after Google directly to date. Instead, Apple has targeted Google's manufacturing partners, including HTC and Samsung.

That's not to say Google hasn't been involved in these patent disputes. In fact, one report earlier this month found that Google had been providing legal support behind the scenes to both HTC and Samsung. But the closest the two companies have come to a head-to-head confrontation is a lawsuit filed against Apple by Motorola Mobility, which is now owned by Google.

The fact that a U.S. court ruled Samsung had infringed on six Apple patents may put pressure on Google to find ways to work with Apple more going forward. These patents include tapping the screen to enlarge an image and the bounce-back feature that stops users from scrolling beyond the bottom of the page, both of which are used in many of the Android smartphones that Samsung produces.

Meanwhile, Cook has said in the past?that he prefers to settle rather than continue the legal battles. This may be his chance to prove whether he really meant that.

Ford breaks ground on new plant in eastern China

HANGZHOU, China (AP) ? Ford Motor Co. is developing a lower-priced small car for the Chinese market but has no plans to start a separate, cheaper brand in China as rivals General Motors and Volkswagen have.

Ford executives discussed their plans during a three-day tour that ended Wednesday at the groundbreaking of a new assembly plant in the eastern city of Hangzhou. The $760 million plant, which is Ford's first plant on the populous east coast of China, is expected to open in 2015.

"Hangzhou is really critical because of the market it serves, and it diversifies our operations," CEO Alan Mulally said after shoveling some dirt in a ceremony with local officials. He said the city has good infrastructure and a trained workforce that will help Ford expand.

Ford won't say what it plans to build there, but Ford China CEO Dave Shoch confirmed this week that a new small car similar to the Chevrolet Sail will be among the eight vehicles Ford is bringing to China by 2015.

Ford's growth in China has been stymied by two things: It has just seven vehicles on sale here, compared with 30 for GM, and those it sells are relatively expensive. The Sail starts at around $10,000. Ford's cheapest offering right now, the subcompact Ford Fiesta, starts at $13,316.

"I think Ford cars are safe. The material they use is good and thick, not like the Japanese cars. But the price is pretty expensive," said Su Xiaoling, 31, a sales manager at a real estate company in Shanghai.

Ford executives hope to start changing that perception next year, with the launch of the lower-priced EcoSport and Kuga small SUVs. The new small car will go on sale sometime in the next three years.

"We do recognize that we have been playing at the higher end," Shoch said.

Ford Asia Pacific chief Joe Hinrichs says the company learned a lot from the development of the Figo, a $6,800 subcompact it sells in India. But Ford won't sell the Figo, which is smaller than the Fiesta, in China, Hinrichs said, in part because it's a right-hand drive car.

One thing the company won't do to attract more price-sensitive buyers is form a cheap, Chinese-only brand. Most of Ford's rivals ? including GM, Volkswagen and Nissan ? have established lower-priced brands in the last year at the request of the Chinese government, which has gotten increasingly concerned that Chinese car companies are falling behind their foreign rivals.

Hinrichs said Ford is studying whether to form a new brand, but thinks China, which has more than 100 car companies, has too many brands already. So far, the government has approved Ford's growth plans without insisting on a new brand, he said.

Ford is in the midst of its biggest production expansion in 50 years in China. It broke ground on a $600 million plant in the southwestern Chinese city of Chongqing on Monday and on Tuesday announced it will bring its Lincoln luxury brand to China in 2014.

Ford says the new plants are key to its plan to increase global sales by 50 percent to 8 million by 2015.

Bollywood plans biopic of boxing hero Mary Kom

A Bollywood film-maker is working on a movie about Indian boxing star and mother-of-two Mary Kom, whose bronze medal at the London Olympics cemented her status as a national hero.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali said Tuesday he was moved by the story of Kom, a poor farmer's daughter from the remote northeast of India who overcame the odds to become a five-times world champion and Olympic medallist.

"Here's a person so splendid, so inspiring, so wonderful," Bhansali told AFP. "Her story needs to be told to the world. It's a wonderful story of a fighter in life."

Bhansali, who directed the 2002 hit movie Devdas, said biopics were not made frequently in Hindi-language Bollywood, but he was "very, very moved" when he read the script.

He admitted he has not yet found an actor for the lead role.

"We'll be auditioning a lot of people for it. Let's see," he said.

Bhansali will be producing the film, while Omung Kumar, who wrote the script, will direct, with a scheduled release date in the the middle of next year.

Kom, 29, told The Times of India she hoped the film would improve ties between the marginalised northeast region where she comes from and the rest of the country.

Earlier this month, thousands of migrants fled from south and west Indian cities after rumours they would be attacked in retaliation for violence in Assam state, which lies in the volatile northeast.

Urban baby blog: Teaching anatomy to a toddler

Animal tails are hard to resist. I don?t know a single toddler who doesn?t like to pull dog tails. Or cat tails. You try to teach your child that pulling on tails isn?t nice, and that respecting animals is important, but sometimes even the best behaved kid can?t resist a good tug. Luckily, I have very tame and tolerant animals.

Tail tugging is all fun and games until someone crawls into bed with her sleeping parents, reaches into her father?s boxer shorts, and yanks ?dada?s tail.? Luckily, I have a very tame and tolerant (if now soprano) baby daddy.

One day your little angel is going to realize that daddies have?tails, and mommies don?t. It might be especially awkward if you have a toddler that was very excited to discover that her father had a ?tail? and wants to see it again. Then some dramatic temper tantrum is going to occur when you tell her that no, she can?t see daddy?s tail because it went away. In desperation you might bring a cat over so she can touch his tail instead. The cat will look at you with an ?et tu, Brute? expression and run away from you and your sobbing child leaving everyone tail-less. Then you will give up and plop your child in front of the television.

I?m not sure how to have the anatomy talk. My daughter is not even two years old yet, but she?s figured out that her and I are?um?the same, and daddy is different. I?m sure very very soon she will discover that one of the boys in her art class is just like daddy and the ?mommies and daddies have different parts? talk is going to turn into the ?boys have this and girls have this and it really isn?t necessary to compare parts with everyone you meet? talk. Then, (when my husband?s involuntary falsetto voice goes away) we will have to say the word penis, and my ever charming (and if you read urban baby blog last week, swearing like a sailor) child will be repeating the word penis to everyone on the street. I can picture it now. She?s going to point to the groins of total strangers and yell penis at the top of her lungs.

I have good reason to worry.?When I was my daughter?s age (according to my parents), after I discovered that daddies and the little boys at daycare had different parts, I got the ?penis talk.? Then a few days later I was at the bank with my father to deposit his paycheck. We were waiting on line with a bunch of people my dad knew and I loudly announced to them that Ashley (a boy from daycare) had a penis but it was a very little penis, and I held up my thumb and forefinger to demonstrate how tiny it was. I also announced that my daddy also had a penis but it was a great big penis and held my arms out wide to let everyone on Staten Island know of its magnitude. ?Twenty-four years later, my father still hasn?t lived it down.

Thank G-d today we have direct deposit.

I?m truly at a loss. Kids are curious, and that?s fine, but man parts and lady parts are a delicate discussion. I know it?s a bit of a safety issue too. We have to communicate that if anyone (aside from the pediatrician) asks my daughter to see her parts she should immediately go away and tell mommy or daddy. And that if she ever sees someone else?s parts she should tell mommy or daddy. Both my husband and I have tried to talk to each other about how to explain anatomy to our daughter, but it usually ends in an awkward silence and putting the talk off for when we have more time.

Maybe when our daughter is 30 and we finally unlock the bedroom door and let her out, we can do it.

(AP) ? President Barack Obama said Mitt Romney has locked himself into "extreme positions" on economic and social issues and would surely impose them if elected, trying to discredit his Republican rival at the biggest political moment of his life.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Obama said Romney lacks serious ideas, refuses to "own up" to the responsibilities of what it takes to be president, and deals in factually dishonest arguments that could soon haunt him in face-to-face debates.

Obama also offered a glimpse of how he would govern in a second term of divided government, insisting rosily that the forces of the election would help break Washington's stalemate. He said he would be willing to make a range of compromises with Republicans, confident there are some who would rather make deals than remain part of "one of the least productive Congresses in American history."

With the remarks, Obama set up a contrast between Romney, whom he cast as an extremist pushing staunchly conservative policies, and himself, by saying he would work across party lines. It was a seeming play for the independent voters who decide close elections and tell pollsters they want to see the often-gridlocked politicians in Washington solve the nation's problems.

Mainly, Obama was intent on countering Romney even before his challenger got to the Republican National Convention, which starts Monday in Tampa, Fla. In doing so, the president depicted his opponent as having accumulated ideas far outside the mainstream with no room to turn back.

"I can't speak to Gov. Romney's motivations," Obama said. "What I can say is that he has signed up for positions, extreme positions, that are very consistent with positions that a number of House Republicans have taken. And whether he actually believes in those or not, I have no doubt that he would carry forward some of the things that he's talked about."

Obama spoke to the AP on Thursday before heading off to a long weekend with his family at Camp David, the secluded presidential retreat in the Maryland mountains.

The president was at ease but doggedly on script, steering even personal-themed questions about Romney and running mate Paul Ryan into answers about starkly different visions for helping the middle class.

Romney, a successful former executive of a private equity firm and one-time Massachusetts governor, will introduce himself to a TV audience of millions next Thursday as he takes the convention stage to accept his party's presidential nomination. He has offered himself as a business-minded alternative to Obama and has seized on voter concerns about joblessness and the direction of the nation.

Nearly 10 weeks before Election Day, the race is remarkably stable and reflective of a sharply divided nation, with registered voters about evenly split on their choice and nearly a quarter of them unsure or still willing to change their mind. Across the interview, Obama's messages often seemed directed at moderate and independent voters whose sway could make the difference.

Obama's depiction of a Romney presidency grew most pointed when he was asked if his Republican challenger has no core, as one of Obama's top advisers once put it.

The president suggested that whatever Romney really stands for in life is secondary to the promises Romney has made in the campaign.

In explaining his accusation of "extreme" positions, the president cited Romney's call for across-the-board tax cuts that Obama said would mostly help the rich at the expense of everyone else and cost the nation $5 trillion. Obama singled out Romney's opposition to tax credits for producers of wind energy, the kind of issue that carries large political resonance in a battleground state such as Iowa.

And Obama alluded to the provocative issue of abortion, suddenly thrust to the fore this week when Republican Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin said the female body has a way to "shut that whole thing down" when a woman is the victim of "legitimate rape."

The Republican platform in Tampa calls for a ban on abortion with no specific exceptions for rape or other circumstances. Obama predicted that a President Romney would not "stand in the way" if Congress gave him a bill that stripped away women's control over their reproductive health.

Romney is on record, however, as not opposing abortion in cases of rape and incest or if it will save the mother's life.

Polling shows social issues such as abortion represent perhaps Obama's best opportunity to draw support from Romney. Obama already holds a broad lead as the candidate more trusted to handle those social issues among Democrats and independents. The issue is one of Romney's biggest vulnerabilities among moderate and liberal Republicans.

Obama also sought to chip away at Romney's trustworthiness, taking fresh shots at Romney's refusal to release years of tax returns for public inspection. He said that position was indicative of a candidate who has a "lack of willingness to take responsibility for what this job entails."

Yet it is the economy that has driven this election and has dominated Obama's message of a middle-class revival.

"We aren't where we need to be. Everybody agrees with that," said Obama, who inherited an economy in free fall and now bears responsibility for a recovery that remains weak. "But Gov. Romney's policies would make things worse for middle-class families and offer no prospect for long-term opportunity for those striving to get into the middle class," the president said.

A Romney spokesman, Ryan Williams, jumped on Obama's account in the interview that the economy clearly needs to get better. "Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan agree," Williams said. "The American people know they aren't better off than they were four years ago."

Obama holds a decisive advantage over Romney when Americans are asked who better understands their daily woes. Yet nearly two-thirds of people in a new AP-GfK poll say the economy is in poor shape, and 60 percent say the country is headed in the wrong direction.

Obama expressed confidence that even voters whose lives have not improved during his term will stick with him as they assess the two candidates.

"If they saw Gov. Romney offering serious proposals that offered some sort of concrete ways in which middle-class families would be helped, then I could understand them thinking about that choice," Obama said. "But that's not what's happening."

And therein lies the central case that Obama made in the interview, as he has made for months, and as he will again at his own party's convention in Charlotte, N.C., in early September.

Obama said he is the candidate whose policies have historically helped the middle class on issues that people care about and that shape the economy ? education, manufacturing, science and research, Medicare, debt reduction, tax rates, health care, consumer protection, college aid, energy.

Williams, the Romney spokesman, responded that Obama has piled up national debt and presided over high unemployment. "Too many middle-class families are going to sleep each night worried," he said. "This may be the best President Obama can do, but it's not the best America can do."

The moment that could finally shake up a close race could come in the three debates Obama and Romney hold in October. The president said Romney could run into trouble because of arguments that are not backed up by facts, citing a widely debunked television ad campaign in which Romney accuses Obama of gutting the work requirement in the federal welfare law.

"It will be a little tougher to defend face-to-face," Obama said.

Obama's view of a different second-term dynamic in Washington, even if both he and House Republicans retain power, seems a stretch given the stalemated politics of a divided government. He said two changes ? the facts that "the American people will have voted," and that Republicans will no longer need to be focused on beating him ? could lead to better conditions for deal-making.

If Republicans are willing, Obama said, "I'm prepared to make a whole range of compromises" that could even rankle his own party. But he did not get specific.

The 25-minute interview, conducted in the library of the White House residence, was part of a multi-faceted campaign by Obama's team to snag some of the spotlight during Romney's big week. Obama denied the notion, widely if quietly held in political circles, that the fiercely competitive president is also driven to beat Romney because he does not hold him in high regard.

"I don't really know him well," Obama said. "The big arguments that I have with Gov. Romney have to do with where we take this country forward."

Multiple new mini iPad proofs - ProductReviews

The chances of Apple releasing a smaller iPad were very slim when Steve Jobs had been alive, which is thanks to his repeated words on a 7-inch model not being needed to fill the gap between iPhone and the 10-inch iPad. It seems that 2012 is a very different year, and this week alone has seen multiple new mini iPad rumors surfacing that confirm what should be the official name and an event planned for October.

Just two days ago we reported that it would be unlikely to see the new iPhone share a stage with other hardware, which has since been given weight from other sources all pointing towards an October event planned for the iPad mini, and this is separate to the new iPhone event expected in September. Within the last 24-hours an article on AllThingsD has touched on the possibility of an October event for the mini iPad, and it?s their opinion that two events is ideal for Apple to keep on top of the ?tech news cycle? right before the busy holiday shopping season.

The name will be kept simple ? just like Apple did with the ?New iPad?, the 3rd generation, it looks like they will keep the name simple for a smaller iPad this year. Today we?re hearing from an Asian source that the official name will simply be ?iPad mini? and come in at a size of 7.85-inches. The source also highlights that the October event could feature a new iPod touch 5G and iPad nano, and we?ve heard previously this event could be focused on everything iTunes and Music with a more mobile iPad.

What specs would you like the mini iPad to feature? The price is currently unclear, although expect it to be cheaper and lose a few specs to cut costs. The iPod touch 5G might feature NFC, as with the iPad 3, and this would allow for the media player to become almost the same as the iPhone (just lacking traditional phone calls).

How a Chinese conglomerate became a cleantech powerhouse

While Wanxiang is not a known name in the U.S., it?s one of China?s largest industrial parts makers and it?s making very aggressive bets on U.S. cleantech startups, some of which have been struggling.

?Cleantech is the new frontier for civilization,? Pin Ni, the President of Wanxiang America, told me in an interview this week. While Wanxiang might be an entirely unfamiliar name in the U.S., it?s one of China?s largest industrial parts companies with $13 billion in revenue and 45,000 employees. Wanxiang?s American division is sizable in its own right, with around $2.5 billion in revenue and 6,000 people.

Wanxiang has emerged as a company that has been making some really aggressive investments into U.S.-based cleantech startups, and the firm has invested in quite a few companies that had hit a wall financially. Most recently Wanxiang said it planned to invest up to $450 million into ailing lithium ion battery maker A123 Systems, which could eventually give Wanxiang 80 percent ownership.

A123 Systems, based in Waltham, Mass. has been bleeding cash for months, with weak sales and a battery recall for a line it produced for electric car maker Fisker Automotive. It was on the verge of being delisted from the Nasdaq. Ni described A123 Systems to me as one of the clear leaders in lithium ion battery manufacturing that has been facing significant financial challenges. Wanxiang will work to help A123 get ?financially stabilized,? said Ni.

Wanxiang also invested $420 million into GreatPoint Energy, a company based in Cambridge, Mass. that converts coal into cleaner-burning natural gas. At the time that deal was described by the Wall Street Journal as ?the largest ever by a Chinese corporation into a venture-capital-funded U.S. company.? GreatPoint Energy planned to use the money partly to build a large-scale plant in China to convert coal into natural.

But before Wanxiang?s investment, GreatPoint Energy?s technology had stalled in the U.S., partly because U.S. shale natural gas had emerged as so cheap plentiful. GreatPoint?s technology showed great promise, but ?economically they were finished in the U.S. The shareholders had decided to not give the company any more money,? said Ni. However, in China, GreatPoint?s economics worked far better.

Ni told me for U.S. cleantech startups, Wanxiang can provide valuable resources like capital, management, and help with expanding into China. Wanxiang is involved in all types of clean technology, from electric cars, to solar, to wind farms, to batteries. Wanxiang invested in another struggling company electric car company Smith Electric Vehicles.

When I asked Ni if Wanxiang looks for undervalued, under performing, cleantech startups, he said, it probably only looks that way because of the few press releases about these companies. Wanxiang also invests in energy companies that are thriving, says Ni.

But the reality of cleantech is that ?we?re not there yet in terms of technology and cost,? says Ni, ?the industry needs a lot of support from governments and private companies. It?s not a viable business as of today.? However, Wanxiang and Ni don?t waver on the sector in the long term: ?There?s no question we need to get there.?

Wanxiang?s investments in U.S. cleantech companies aren?t without controversy; particularly for companies that have gotten money from the U.S. government, and then are building products in China. A123 Systems received a $249 million matching grant from the Department of Energy to build its factory, which will now be mostly owned by the Chinese conglomerate.

How to Outsource on a Budget?Really! | The British Virtual Assistant

This week Adele talks about outsourcing and as a Virtual Assistant this is a topic close to my heart. There are a lot of my clients who thought they could not afford to hire me and now could not run their business without me!

If there?s been a common theme to my guest posts here, it?s that you need to outsource. Trying to perform each specific task for your business works against your productivity for many reasons. Here are just a few of those reasons:

  • Performing small tasks gives you less time to do more important business building activities like planning and marketing your business.
  • Doing the job of several people (admin assistant, bookkeeper, accountant, marketing manager and more) means it?s difficult to do any one thing well.
  • You are working harder than you need to and you sacrifice your health and well-being by working so much.

Many business owners tell me they simply can?t afford to outsource, but in my opinion, you simply can?t afford NOT to.? The interesting thing is that the more you outsource effectively, the more you can leverage your own time to earn more money. So not only is outsourcing a time saver, it?s a money maker too.

If you are on a budget, start by outsourcing just a few tasks or hire a virtual assistant (VA) for an hour or two each week. If you aren?t familiar with what a VA is, it?s simply an assistant that can perform a variety of business tasks. They aren?t an employee, so you don?t have to pay salary or benefits. Plus, they work from their own home or office, so they don?t need to come to your place of work.

To decide what you should outsource, consider a few things:

  • What necessary tasks drag you away from business building activities? For example, answering emails and performing customer support are usually the first things that I recommend people outsource. They are important tasks, but they can be a distraction from actually growing one?s business.
  • What tasks do you really not enjoy doing? You will always be more productive in your business if you focus on the things you like to do.? If you don?t like writing articles, hire a writer to write them. If you don?t like crunching numbers or doing taxes, hire an accountant.
  • What tasks are you unable to do for your business? If you don?t know how to make graphics or do programming for your business, hire the appropriate people. Sometimes the learning curve required just results in frustration and it?s simply easier to have someone else take care of those details. Some of those harder tasks are things you may learn over time, but there is no sense in stressing yourself out and slowing down your progress because you?re trying to do everything yourself.
  • If you consider your hourly worth, which tasks could you hire someone to do more cheaply? Many of us do work that greatly reduces our hourly worth in our business. If you focused only on high level tasks (like email marketing, planning and other marketing tasks), what would your hourly worth be? Probably a lot higher than it is now. If you put your hourly worth at $25, $50 or $75 per hour and you can hire someone to do tasks at a lower rate than that, you should probably hire them.

Again, there?s no need to jump in over your head and hire people to do everything you don?t like or can?t do, but you?ve got to make a small start. Just hiring an assistant to answer emails for 2 hours per week will free you up like you wouldn?t imagine. Yes obviously, you?ll get an extra 2 hours per week?but email is a huge distraction and taking that off your to do list means you can be far more focused on everything else. Once you see the results of your first hire, begin to outsource a bit more at a time.

Keep it going and keep growing.

Thank you Adele for another great post and for the endorsement of using a Virtual Assistant. If you would like to leave a comment then we would love to hear from you.

Bootstrapping an Online Education Company to $12M - Sramana Mitra

Aaron is a co-founder of Pluralsight, where he serves as the chief executive officer. Aaron has spent years developing course materials and teaching professional developers throughout the world. He has presented at many popular developer conferences like PDC, TechEd, and VSLive! Microsoft recognized Aaron as an MVP in the ?Connected Systems? developer community for eight years. Aaron has written numerous books, articles, and white papers, including the Essential XML Quick Reference (Addison Wesley, 2001), Essential XML (Addison Wesley, 2000), and his popular columns in MSDN Magazine.

Sramana: Aaron, let?s begin your story by reviewing your background. Where do your roots of entrepreneurship originate?

Aaron Skonnard: I grew up in Portland, Oregon. I was always in love with computers. My father purchased one of the first Apple computers as well as one of the very first Compaq PCs. He taught me the basics of programming and things that he had learned on his own. He knew that computers were going to be the future of the world. He exposed us to that as kids, and I just latched on to it. I started writing programs in BASIC in the early days of the PC.

As I grew up math and science were a big part of my life. They were things that I excelled in. Later on I went to Brigham Young University in Utah. I studied computer science there and graduated intending to be a programmer for the rest of my life. At times I was tempted to get a business degree or a law degree because at the time computer science did not seem that professional. It did not have as much stature as other professions. I had a fear that computer science would not take me far in my career, and at the time I think that was a common fear.

I played around with other topics and tried to do law for a short time. The reality is that I did not like the other topics. As I learned more about what it would take to succeed in those careers, I realized that I had no desire to do it. I always had a love of business and I was interested in the business side of programming. I decided to just get my feet wet as a professional programmer and then return for an MBA at some point in the future. That never actually happened because of how quickly my career took off. I never had time to do it.

Over time I evolved into a CEO role. I have done a lot of self-education and self-learning. Today I am in the position that I have always wanted to be in. I run a company that is dedicated to the profession of software developers. It makes me incredibly happy. I have had more fun in the last three years than I have had in my entire career.

Children of older men have more gene abnormalities: study

Do older fathers doom their children to genetic disease?

This is the question raised by a new study that says older men produce more gene mutations in the children they sire, boosting their risk of schizophrenia and autism and possibly other diseases.

A father's age is by far the biggest factor determining the rate of new, uninherited genetic mutations in his offspring, according to a paper published Wednesday in the journal Nature.

From a man's peak reproductive years in adolescence, the rate of new or "de novo" gene mutations triggered at conception in his children rises by about two per year, the study found.

The rate doubles every 16 years, meaning that the baby of a 36-year-old father would have twice as many new mutations than that of a 20-year-old.

"The age of the father is the most important factor to determine the number of new mutations that happen when a child is conceived," study co-author Kari Stefansson from Iceland's DeCODE genetics company told AFP.

Though de novo mutations are not necessarily harmful, it can take only one change in a key gene to cause some types of disease -- and the more mutations the higher the risk.

The results from what is claimed to be the biggest-ever study of its kind suggest that disproportionate attention has been paid to the age at which women give birth.

"We have in a very unjust manner been pointing the finger at the old mother when we should have been careful when it comes to the old father. It is clearly dangerous to have an old father," said Stefansson.

Maternal age is linked to Down's syndrome and other chromosomal diseases that develop through a process that is different to the type of genetic mutation described in this study.

The mutations in the Nature report are caused by cell division during processes like sperm production.

Stefansson and a team in Iceland, Denmark and Britain sequenced the genomes of 78 parent-child trios, as well as hundreds of control subjects, looking for variants in the sequence of a child's genetic code that did not exist in the parents.

They found that the rate of increase in de novo mutations could be ascribed to the tune of 97.1 percent, "maybe entirely", to the age of the father -- an outcome that "surprised" the researchers.

The remaining 2.9 percent was ascribed to environmental factors and other random influences, Stefansson said, adding there was "no connection" between the mother and age-related increase in the rate of mutations.

The average newborn today has about 60 new small-scale mutations -- ranging from 25 in the child of a 20-year-old man to 65 in that of a 40-year-old, Alexey Kondrashov of the University of Michigan's department of ecology and evolutionary biology wrote in an analysis of the study.

The number of de novo mutations ascribed to the mother always remains roughly 15, regardless of her age.

Previous research has shown a link between de novo mutations and autism and schizophrenia, and also a statistical link between the diseases and paternal age.

"Our contention is that a part of the increase in the diagnosis of autism that is being made these days is accounted for by increase in the age of the father," said Stefansson.

And he added further research is likely to show a similar link to other genetic illnesses, especially diseases of the brain.

In a comment also carried by Nature, Kondrashov said the study suggested a rethink of the advisable age to have children. It might be a "wise individual decision" for young men to cold-store their sperm for later use.

The age of new fathers in the Western world has been climbing in recent decades, and the number of first-time dads over 40 is growing. Official statistics show that in Iceland, the average age of fathers at conception rose from 27.9 in 1980 to 33 in 2011.

Contrary to de novo mutations which occur during cell division, inherited gene mutations are transferred at an equal rate by the father and mother, are more common and thus more commonly responsible for disease.

Scientists believe that both inherited and new mutations are responsible for diseases like autism and schizophrenia, but have not worked out the ratio of blame.

On the positive side, de novo gene mutations are a necessary element of human evolution, allowing us to adapt to our changing environment.
