Sennheiser HD 219s

Sennheiser's HD 219s headphones are a fairly unassuming pair compared with the typical, bulky, around-the-ear style pair we often see from the German manufacturer. At $79.95 (direct), the lightweight, comfortable headphones are also atypical in terms of their sound signature?yes, the usual crisp highs we associate with Sennheiser are here, but the low frequency response of the HD 219s seems less powerful. At top volumes, there is also a bit of distortion on deep bass tracks?worshippers of low frequencies should look elsewhere. Those seeking a more flat response-style pair in the price range will enjoy the HD 219s's overall sound signature. The headphones include an inline remote and microphone for mobile devices, and almost no accessories.

Design
The lightweight, supra-aural (on-ear) design of the HD 219s consists of a black matte plastic headband and pivoting earcups. The ear pads are amply cushioned, as is the underside of the headband, and the frame rests gently on both the ears and scalp, making this pair ideal for long listening sessions.

The earcups fold down flat, but the headphone frame doesn't collapse down for easier storage, nor do they ship with a carrying pouch to stuff them in. The only included accessory, in fact, is an adapter for the cable to fit Nokia-type phone jacks.

Call clarity through the inline mic is fine. The remote control has a single button that controls playback, track navigation, and call answering, depending on how many times you tap it and when. There's a volume slider built-in to the control compartment?a nice solution that keeps the remote universal while still allowing for volume adjustments. (Most three-button remotes, with volume controls, are for iPhones only, and most single button remotes lack volume controls.)

Performance
On tracks with intense sub-bass content, like the Knife's "Silent Shout," the HD 219s distorts a bit at maximum volume (on both the remote and the volume source?in this case, an iPhone 4S). At more moderate volumes, the distortion disappears, and the low frequency response is rich and articulate, but not as powerful as it would be on a pair with seriously boosted bass response.

Bill Callahan's voice on "Drover" is delivered with an ideal combination of crisp high-mid presence and rich low-mids, allowing a little bit of treble edge to add some definition to his smooth baritone vocals. The drumming on this track often sounds unnatural on heavily bass-boosted pairs, but the HD 219s doesn't seem to add much of anything in terms of low end to the constant thump of the drums, which can make the track sound a bit thin at times. If you favor a crisp response with nice detail throughout the mid-ranges, however, the HD 219s delivers?it's obviously just not a pair for bass fiends.

Jay-Z and Kanye West's "No Church in the Wild" gets the best and worst of the HD 219s's sound signature. On the one hand, the attack of the kick drum loop gets a nice, crunchy attack that sometimes sounds dull on pairs that boost the bass too much. On the other, since the HD 219s doesn't do a whole lot of boosting of the lows, in general, the sub-bass synth hits that punctuate the beat fade into the background here. The focus on the mids makes the HD 219s an ideal pair for listening to vocals, however, whether they're Callahan's or Kanye West's?voices are clear and crisp, but never brittle or overly-sibilant.

Classical tracks, like John Adams' "The Chairman Dances," predictably end up being a showcase for the higher register strings and brass through the HD 219s?these are the instruments that tend to take the spotlight anyway on classical recordings, which are more transparently recorded and mixed than modern pop and rock records. This means that the lower register strings and deeper percussion hits don't get much of a boost at all. The track doesn't sound brittle, but again, this is a sound signature that will appeal more to flat response-seekers.

If you're not a deep bass lover and don't listen to a lot of electronic music or hip hop with deep low frequency content, it's easier to look past the distortion that only occurs at maximum (unwise) listening levels. But if you're looking for a pair in this price range that can pump out deep lows at high volumes, the Skullcandy Navigator is a solid option. If you're looking for crisp highs paired with a bit more bass than the HD 219s offers, the Sennheiser HD 429s is a well-balanced, distortion-free pair with solid bass and crisp highs. For a bit more, the Logitech UE 4000 offers great balance, as well. If all of these are out of your price range, the RHA SA950i is an affordable option that is far from perfect, but offers decent audio performance for the price. At $80, the Sennheiser HD 219s provides solid performance if you don't need the deep bass, but it's a non-option if you do, and it exists in a field full of capable headphones.

Why the new Mac Pro might be the most exciting Apple product since the iPad

Guy English, my co-host on Debug and Ad Hoc doesn't un-fallow his personal blog often, but when he does it's usually more than a little cause for contemplation. Last night was no different, as he dove deep into the new Mac Pro, and why he thinks it might just be the most interesting piece of hardware Apple's fielded since the original iPad. From Kickingbear:

This machine fascinates me not because it seems like it?ll make everything I currently do faster. It fascinates me because it?s fundamentally new. There?s only one CPU socket and it bets heavily on the bus and GPU performance. While this looks to software to be just another Mac it isn?t. It?s capabilities aren?t traditional. The CPU is a front end to a couple of very capable massively parallel processors at the end of a relatively fast bus. One of those GPUs isn?t even hooked up to do graphics. I think that?s a serious tell. If you leverage your massively parallel GPU to run a computation that runs even one second and in that time you can?t update your screen, that?s a problem. Have one GPU dedicated to rendering and a second available for serious computation and you?ve got an architecture that?ll feel incredible to work with.

I'm now factorially more excited about this machine, and like Guy, not just because of what it is, but because of what it might allow to be. No more spoilers. Go read the whole thing.

Look up in the sky for a super sight: the biggest and brightest full moon of the year.

The so-called supermoon will appear 14 percent larger than normal early Sunday as our celestial neighbor swings closer to Earth. Some may think the supermoon looks more dazzling, but it's actually an optical illusion. The moon looms larger on the horizon next to trees and buildings.

The moon will come within 222,000 miles of Earth and turn full around 7:30 a.m. EDT, making it the best time to view.

Online War Erupts as Bridal Couple Rejects Gift

As a young bride, Janet, a 54-year-old medical practice manager from Maryland, sent back a wedding gift -- a small oval framed picture in a gilded frame -- under pressure from her mother, who thought it was "cheap."

"It embarrasses 35 years later," said Janet, who was 19 at the time. "My mom hated it ... and I took her advice and sent it back. I learned a life lesson and would never do it again.

"At my mom's suggestion I wrote a thank you note and let the giver know that it did not go with any of the decor at our home," she said. "I felt bad about it for years and never saw the woman again."

Her mother was under the false impression that "people should always give a gift that pays for the wedding," said Janet.

Volunteers use wedding registries to help hurricane victims.

Just this week, a similar story about a bridal couple who insulted their Canadian wedding guests went viral. They received a hamper filled with tasty delights: Sour Patch Kids, Marshmallow Fluff, croutons, cookies, olive oil and pasta. The note attached to the gift read: "Life is delicious. ... Enjoy."

But the same-sex couple, who were European, didn't like the gift and sent a text the next day asking for a receipt so they could get reimbursed. A subsequent series of nasty text and Facebook messages were published June 11 in the Hamilton Spectator, a Canadian newspaper:

But the conversation quickly disintegrated.

The bride's wife wrote, "I'm not sure if it's the first wedding you have been to, but for your next wedding ... People give envelopes. I lost out on $200 covering you and your dates plate ... And I got fluffy whip and sour patch kids in return."

In a note sent out a day later, the ungrateful bride wrote, "Thanks again for the $30 gift basket ... you should be embarrassed for being so cheap," the bride sniped.

The Emily Post Institute, based in Burlington, Vt., has been inundated with calls about when it is appropriate to return an unwanted gift.

"I read the whole exchange and there were many things wrong on both sides," said Anna Post, the great-great-granddaughter of the doyenne of American etiquette.

"We don't have a winner here. Some people are a little closer to the right idea than the other. But both people really failed in how they expressed themselves."

Re-gifts, bagel guillotines and over-sized metal encrusted vases were just some of the gifts that readers told ABCNews.com they had received at their weddings and wanted to return.

Jerry Berger, a public relations director for a Boston hospital, said that he, too, received an unwanted gift when he was married in 1977 -- a bounced check in foreign currency.

"It technically did not bounce, but we could not cash it, and I believe we paid for the privilege of finding out," said Berger, 61. "No bank wanted to deal with it."

Post said that the choice of wedding gift is "always up to the giver. Period. How much you spend on that gift -- any gift, for a birthday or christening or graduation. It's only based on the giver's budget and their relationship to the recipient and what they think the recipient might like in good faith."

Student engagement more complex, changeable than thought

June 20, 2013 ? A student who shows up on time for school and listens respectfully in class might appear fully engaged to outside observers, including teachers. But other measures of student engagement, including the student's emotional and cognitive involvement with the course material, may tell a different story -- one that could help teachers recognize students who are becoming less invested in their studies, according to a new study coauthored by a University of Pittsburgh researcher.

More importantly for educators, the study, published online in the professional journal Learning and Instruction, suggests that student engagement -- essential for success in school -- is malleable, and can be improved by promoting a positive school environment. The result paves the way for future work to offer teachers diagnostic tools for recognizing disengagement, as well as strategies for creating a school environment more conducive to student engagement.

"Enhancing student engagement has been identified as the key to addressing problems of low achievement, high levels of student misbehavior, alienation, and high dropout rates," said Ming-Te Wang, assistant professor of psychology in education in the School of Education and of psychology in the Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences at Pitt, who coauthored the study with Jacquelynne S. Eccles, the Wilbert McKeachie and Paul Pintrich Distinguished University Professor of Psychology and Education at the University of Michigan.

"When we talk about student engagement, we tend to talk only about student behavior," Wang added. "But my coauthor and I feel like that doesn't tell us the whole story. Emotion and cognition are also very important."

Wang and Eccles' study is among the first attempts by researchers to use data to explore a multidimensional approach to the question of student engagement. In the past, only behavioral measures of student engagement -- such as class attendance, turning in homework on time, and classroom participation -- had been evaluated when gauging student engagement. By conducting a study linking students' perceptions of the school environment with behavior, the authors have provided one of the first pieces of empirical research supporting the viability of the multidimensional perspective, which had previously been largely theoretical.

The researchers designed a 100-question survey that includes the evaluation of emotional engagement and cognitive engagement. Sample survey questions that tested emotional engagement in classes across all subject areas asked students to agree or disagree with statements such as "I find schoolwork interesting" and "I feel excited by the work in school." Sample questions concerning cognitive engagement asked students to provide ratings to questions like "How often do you make academic plans for solving problems?" and "How often do you try to relate what you are studying to other things you know about?"

Using the survey, Wang and Eccles conducted a two-year longitudinal study, tracking approximately 1,200 Maryland students from seventh through eighth grade. The authors also measured students' perceptions of their environment by having them answer questions in five areas: school structure support, which gauged the clarity of teacher expectations; provision of choice, which assessed students' opportunities to make learning-related decisions; teaching for relevance, which evaluated the frequency of activities deemed relevant to students' personal interests and goals; students' perceptions of the emotional support offered by teachers; and students' perceptions of how positive their relationships were with fellow students.

The authors found that students who felt that the subject matter being taught and the activities provided by their teachers were meaningful and related to their goals were more emotionally and cognitively engaged than were their peers. Adding measures of emotional and cognitive engagement could broaden researchers' perspectives on student engagement in future work in this area.

Also among the paper's main findings is that the school environment can and, indeed, should be changed if it is impeding student engagement. A positive and supportive school environment is marked, Wang said, by "positive relationships with teachers and peers. Schools must provide opportunities for students to make their own choices. But they also must create a more structured environment so students know what to do, what to expect, from school." Wang also noted, however, that there is no "one size fits all" strategy to the problem of student engagement.

"Usually people say, 'Yes, autonomy is beneficial. We want to provide students with choices in school,'" Wang said. "This is the case for high achievers, but not low achievers. Low achievers want more structure, more guidelines."

As a result, Wang said, teachers must take into account individual variation among students in order to fulfill the needs of each student.

Wang's current work, undertaken in partnership with six Allegheny County school districts, focuses on developing a diagnostic tool that teachers can use to identify students who are disengaged from school, with a specific emphasis on math and science classes.

Samsung Galaxy NX mirrorless camera official: Interchangeable lenses, Android Jelly Bean and 4G LTE

True to JK Shin's promise, Samsung is indeed introducing a new Android-powered mirrorless camera: the Galaxy NX. Although it runs Google's mobile OS (version 4.2.2 Jelly Bean) and bears LTE radios, the NX is not quite a direct sequel to the Galaxy Camera, the company's glorified point-and-shoot for all comers. Rather, the Galaxy NX is what Samsung calls an interchangeable-lens CSC (or Compact System Camera), featuring a 20.3-megapixel APS-C sensor, as well as 3G / 4G LTE, WiFi and Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity -- making it worthy of that Galaxy moniker.

As you can tell from the above image, the Galaxy NX also packs a large 4.8-inch HD LCD display on its rear and is powered by a 1.6GHz Pega-Q quad-core setup and separate DRIMe IV Signal processor for imaging. The UI should look pretty familiar to anyone who's used an Android device before, with the common apps and widgets submenus, as well as the device wheel for its 30 Smart Modes -- employed when selecting imaging settings. And if you happen to own any of the company's other NX cameras, you'll be able to swap out lenses (13 in all) as the Galaxy NX is fully compatible with that range. It also incorporates a hybrid AF, culled from the best of DSLRs and compacts, with a shutter speed of 1/6,000th of a second and 8.6fps shooting.

Samsung's been pretty forthcoming about all the tech and software it's put into the Galaxy NX, but there are two key bits it's still withholding: pricing and availability. For now, it appears UK residents will have first crack at the Galaxy NX, as PR pegs its release for that territory as sometime this summer. The same, however, can't be said for a US launch. Regardless, as the Galaxy NX is more a proper camera for experienced photogs and less Android phone like the Galaxy Camera and S4 Zoom, you can bet on its price tag being relatively high. In the meantime, check out our Galaxy NX hands-on for more detailed impressions.

BALTIMORE (AP) ? Orb came up short in the Preakness, frustrating everyone who made the Kentucky Derby winner a 3-5 favorite ? no one more than trainer Shug McGaughey.

"I'm disappointed," McGaughey said after Orb finished fourth and Oxbow pulled off the upset Saturday.

"I'll be more disappointed tomorrow than I am right now. I know the game. It is highs and lows. Probably more lows than highs."

McGaughey and Orb were certainly on a high in the two weeks since the Derby. The colt had trained sensationally ahead of the Preakness, fanning hopes that a horse was finally going to end the Triple Crown drought that dates back to Affirmed in 1978.

Orb needed a Preakness win to set the stage for a Triple try three weeks later in the Belmont Stakes. He couldn't deliver, despite the outpouring of support at Pimlico as fans cheered loudly when he led the post parade.

He never settled into a groove. Orb broke from the rail and didn't seem comfortable being surrounded by horses.

In the Derby, Orb unleashed a breathtaking rally around the final turn, circling the field on a sloppy track to win by 2? lengths.

But there was no explosive move in the Preakness, only a mild kick in the late stages to make a dull effort appear a little better than it was.

McGaughey, as gracious as he's been throughout the Orb run, saluted fellow Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas on the victory.

"We had a great run two weeks ago," McGaughey said. "My hats off to Wayne, winning his sixth Preakness. That's a pretty remarkable record."

The company just announced the Aspire R7, a 15-inch laptop whose display sits on a flexible "Ezel" hinge, allowing it to be pushed up and back so that it lies nearly flat -- yep, just like an all-in-one desktop. Similar to the Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga line, too, you can flip the screen all the way back so that it faces away from the keyboard, a feature that seems especially well-suited for giving presentations.

In terms of specs, Acer is being a little cagey, but we have learned the R7 has a 15.6-inch, 1080p display with a choice of Core i5 and i7 processors. The whole thing weighs in the neighborhood of five and a half pounds. Also confirmed: it's up for pre-order now for $999, available exclusively at Best Buy in the US. We're told it will ship May 17th. In the meantime, we've got hands-on photos below, and we'll very shortly be adding some first impressions after the break.

Room 237 is a movie for movie buffs - and available in Google Play

Cook some Jiffy Pop and keep that tin foil for a hat -- Room 237 is 100 minutes of thought-provoking conspiracy theories

With no podcast tonight, I've been forced to find something else to occupy my idle hands. A quick trip into Google Play found the film Room 237, and halfway through I'm hooked.

Without any spoilers, it dissects Stanley Kubrick's take on The Shining into a million tiny slices, and analyzes it all with a keen eye for detail -- and conspiracy theories abound. Half of what I'm hearing sounds absolutely insane, but all of it sounds interesting as heck. Well worth the $7, and I didn't have to get dressed and head to the theater.

Remember, there's more to Google Play than just apps if you're in a country that supports all the content. If you're bored, or a film enthusiast I think you'll like this one.
