Rushed trainings, lack of materials mar implementation of K to 12 ...

Lawmakers expect problems on June 4 school opening

MANILA ? Part of the preparations of the Department of Education (DepEd) in the implementation of the K to 12 program is to train public school teachers. However, teachers noted that trainings they have undergone were rushed and not well thought of. France Castro, secretary general of the Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) said the time spent for teachers? training is not enough. ?There are lots of new things for teachers to learn in order to implement the new curriculum. One to two months training is not enough. Is this what the DepEd calls as in-depth training of teachers??

The DepEd will implement the K to 12 program for the incoming grade one and grade seven or first year high school students in all public schools nationwide. The mandatory kindergarten, which is part of the said program, was already implemented by DepEd last school year.

Grades 11 and 12 or senior high school (SHS) will be implemented in school year 2016-2017.

Dante A. Verdera, 49, a technical and livelihood education (TLE) and Araling Panlipunan teacher in Godofredo M. Tan Memorial School in Nueva Ecija said their training was in haste. ?We underwent training for only 10 days for a subject that we will teach for one year,? Verdera told Bulatlat.com. He is a teacher for the incoming grade seven students.

He called the training half-baked. ?We have a thick training module, about 300 pages, that we have to study. During our training, we were up until midnight just to study the module. That is not good because we were cramming. We were forcing ourselves to learn something that takes time to learn,? he said.

Not only that, Castro added, teaching guidelines and learning modules have not yet been distributed to teachers. ?Supposedly teaching guidelines and learning modules are given to teachers while they are on training. But, according to the teachers who underwent the training, some of them have yet to receive the said materials.?

Regina E. Ramos, 49, teacher of MAPEH (Music, Arts, Physical Education and Health) in Navotas National High School said they received their module, but it is still incomplete, up to the second grading period only. ?Our training was rushed, and the materials they distributed are not even complete. What are we going to use for the third and fourth grading periods? It?ll be difficult to teach without a reference material,? Ramos said in an interview with Bulatlat.com.

Ramos said she asked their trainers about the modules for the third and fourth grading periods and they told her that the department would just act on it when the time comes.

Lolita Rubante, grade one teacher at Western New Elementary School also lamented, ?The program is good, but it is much better if the materials are also complete. If they (government) really want a good outcome and they want our education system to be like other countries, they should provide us with the complete materials.?

She said they already foresaw the problems even before the trainings began. ?We already predicted that there would be a lack of materials, lack of preparation. They revised the curriculum but they did not provide us with the materials,? Rubante told Bulatlat.com.

Flody Hernandez, Filipino teacher for grade seven at the Ramon Magsaysay High School ?Cubao also said, ?Trainers from DepEd discussed the program and how we are going to implement it. However, the problem lies in the lack of materials. The reference book on K 12 is really not enough,? Hernandez said.

Public school teachers believe in the objectives of the K to 12 program, as it will use the mother tongue language as medium of instruction in grades one to three. However, the implementation of the said program is not well-planned. Teachers were trained at a very short time and teaching guides are not massively distributed. Ramos, together with other public school teachers, believe that to properly implement the ?flagship? program of President Benigno ?Noynoy? S. Aquino III, enough time for teachers? training is essential.

?Good teachers are essential?

Columnist and teacher Queena N. Lee-Chua said in her one column about the K to 12 program, ?To implement the K to 12 curriculum properly, good teachers are essential.?

In her column titled, ?Preparing teachers for the big reform? Chua cited the June 2010 Ched (Commission on Higher Education) Zonal Research Project where tests were given to students of Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education majoring in math, biology and english to measure their knowledge and skills. The study showed poor results.

According to Chua, ?The researchers said, if 75 percent is the benchmark for the minimum amount of actual learning, math majors achieved an average mean of 51.59 percent; English, 51.67 and biology, 37.86 percent.?

The 2006 survey by the National Teachers College covering students majoring in math also showed poor results. ?Scores of future elementary teachers ranged from 55 to 73 percent, while their secondary counterparts scored even lower, 53 to 65 percent,? Chua said.

Chua?s column rooted the incompetency of teachers to the lack of academic conferences and seminar workshops, lack of resources such as availability of instructional materials, most specially updated references, among others. Same also goes to the trainings of teachers and the hasty implementation of the new curriculum for school year 2012-2013.

Are teachers competent or even ready to implement the K to 12 curriculum for grades one and seven? Verdera doubted . ?With the short time given to us, I doubt if we really are ready for this reform in our education sector.?

?We study for four years and even take another year to pass the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET) before we could become teachers. The DepEd must be dreaming when it expects that teachers can properly implement the new curriculum with only days or weeks of training,? Castro said.(http://bulatlat.com)

3 Home Improvement Projects You Can Do With Your Kids

Following are a few home improvement projects that are perfect to do with your kids.

1. Clean out the Gutters Don't get us wrong--we're not suggesting that you put your child up on the roof. But there are plenty of ways that your kids can help you with the monotonous chore of cleaning out the gutters. First, have your child help you walk around the house and check the gutters for spots that are rusty, loose, or look as though they're crooked. These are the areas of your gutters that you'll most likely want to repair at a later date.

When it's time for you to climb up on the ladder and get to work scooping out that gutter muck, ask your child to stay on the ground and put the debris that you scoop out of the gutters into a garbage bag.

2. Work on some gardening Gardening is a great way to include your kids in a home improvement project. Go the extra step and have your kids help you create a garden just for them. First, sit down and talk to your kids about what types of things they'd like to plant. Do they want to stick to flowers and vegetation, or would they like to plant some vegetables? Have the kids help you sketch out a plan for what the garden will include.

Once the plans are made, it's time to begin clearing some space outside for the garden. With your children's help, till the soil in your chosen spot and then get going planting the seeds. Explain to your kids the importance of watering the plants regularly and of weeding the garden. They're sure to be proud of themselves and of their garden when it's time to pick the veggies or when the flowers bloom.

3. Paint a room Painting is one of the best home improvement projects for kids to help out with. You can begin getting your children involved from the start by having them help you pick out the ideal paint color for whatever room you plan on painting. Once it's time to begin the actual painting process, dress your child in some old clothes and set him or her up with a roller. They're sure to have a blast helping you paint! This is particularly fun for kids if you're painting their room. They'll have a feeling of pride in their work once the job is completed.

These are just three home improvement projects that you can easily do with the help of your little ones. What other projects can you think of that kids can help out with?

Scientists at the Vienna University of Technology found a method to locate single gold atoms on a surface -- this should pave the way to better and cheaper catalysts

This release is available in German.

Most people value large chunks of gold but scientists at the Vienna University of Technology are interested in gold at the smallest possible scale, because single gold atoms are potentially the most reactive catalysts for chemical reactions. However, when gold atoms are placed on a surface they tend to ball up into tiny nuggets consisting of several atoms. A team of surface scientists now managed to fix single gold atoms on special sites of an iron-oxide surface. This could open the door to more efficient catalysts, requiring less of the precious material.

Gold Does Not Like to Be Alone

Gold is a noble metal and does not usually bond with other elements, but as a catalyst it facilitates chemical reactions. It can, for example, facilitate the conversion of poisonous carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide. The effectiveness of gold as a catalyst depends on the size of the gold particles. Some evidence suggests that it works best if the gold is present in the form of single atoms. So far, however, this could not be studied in detail. "If individual gold atoms are put on a surface, they usually cluster up, forming nanoparticles", says Gareth Parkinson, who oversaw the experiments in the research group of Professor Ulrike Diebold at the Institute for Applied Physics at the TU Vienna.

Hot Surfaces Loose Atoms

Higher temperatures lead to a higher mobility of the gold atoms, so in order to stop the atoms from clustering, most surfaces must be cooled to a temperature so low that the desired chemical reactions would stop entirely. The researchers at the TU Vienna found a special kind of iron-oxide surface, which locks the single gold atoms in place.

A Good Place to Settle Down

The key to success is a slight deformation of the iron-oxide crystal structure. The oxygen atoms of the topmost layer are not aligned in perfectly straight lines, they are bent into wiggles by the atoms below. At the points where the lines of oxygen atoms are close to each other, the gold atoms attach permanently without losing grip. Even if the surface is heated, the gold atoms stay put only at 500 degrees celsius they start forming clusters.

"When a gold atom hits the iron oxide surface, it diffuses to one of the sites where it can be attached to the surface", says Gareth Parkinson. That way, many single gold atoms can be placed close to each other. When a gold atom hits a position already occupied by another gold atom, however, the two bond and start moving across the surface, picking up additional gold atoms along the way. When they have reached a critical size of at least five atoms, they become immobile again and the miniature gold nugget comes to rest.

New Paths for New Research

Ulrike Diebold expects that the new method will answer important open questions about catalysis. "We have created an ideal model system for probing the chemical reactivity of single atomic species", says Diebold. The recent experiments will also help to advance theoretical research: the quantum mechanically complex bonding between single atoms and this particular surfaces provide an excellent test case for theoretical calculations of highly correlated electron systems.

Spice Up Your Social Life With Garden Furniture

By: Samivsoft

It is no longer sofas, tables, cabinets and 3 piece suites that hold our interest when it comes to furniture talk. With an increasingly stunning choice of garden furniture on sale, it seems the garden is the place to be. This is not surprising if an Englishman"s home is his castle. It makes perfect sense that his garden is a precious slice of land that is a part of it. For most people, the garden creates a huge impact on everyday life and how we use our gardens is so individual it makes all the difference.
This is why so many of us are now taking a closer look at garden furniture and how we can transform our patch. Not surprisingly, it is no longer dragging out the old rusty sun loungers with the torn, worn cushions that have lain around in the shed for years. Absolutely not! It is about making a statement, whether bold and beautiful, bright and cheerful or simply subtle and elegant.
A simple bench or companion set with shared table could be ideal for just the two of you to take a rest from all that planting and weeding. Brewing a pot of tea and bringing out jam scones for two completes the scene.
For those family lunches, the classic pub style picnic table and bench set is just perfect. Pop a large umbrella sunshade into the middle and you won"t burn whilst eating. Do not forget a sturdy umbrella base to avoid doing a Mary Poppins float-away when it gets a bit windy.
Folding table and chairs for 4 or 6 people always goes down well when it comes to standard garden furniture and the great thing with these classics is that they can be folded and tucked away for the colder months. For those delightful al fresco dinners, why not get recliner chairs? After all that good food outdoors in the appetite building fresh air, you might just need to recline a little. You could be forgiven for falling asleep too with a set of padded, comfy cushions to help you.
If it is pure sophistication you are looking for, then some of the latest styles are in a basket wicker weave in subtle shades to complement the outdoors. Complete with cushions, they are so elegant you will feel you really are in a sitting room. This type of outdoor living furniture is perfect for glamorous entertaining.

Writing again ? The Lair of the Wolf

Been a while since I actually wrote something. And that?s probably due to the bulk of office work I seem to be saddled with day in and day out. Add to that, I also have other things to attend to in my spare time. Yep, it?s been quite hectic these past few days.

I have had some thoughts which I entertained over these past few weeks. And I felt writing down some of them here. But as it would happen, my physical limitations overwhelmed me and so I often end up falling asleep. I would usually awake to another work day so I?ve lost the time and opportunity where I could have written my thoughts down.

I guess that?s the difference between blogging for one?s self and blogging for an audience or for monetary considerations. When you do it for your audience or your benefactors, you are compelled to write despite the time, situation and other considerations. You are beholden to other people and so you?re forced to think and forced to put something in your ?personal? blog. When you write for yourself, you write at your own convenience.

But writing (or in this case, blogging) is not merely the desire to let off steam or express angst, frustration, excitement and other emotions. I think there?s more to it than just that. Writing, while may be done with the use of words translating the thoughts passing through the authors head, is more about having time for yourself. I have always found the moments I blog to be among those where I am, to borrow the terms used by my Jesuit mentors, one with myself.

Writing is more about introspection than it is about relating to others (or in the case of Philippine social media, joining the fray of opinions). When you write you have to talk with your self; entertain the thoughts which bother you; and attempt to understand why they disturb you or why you spend so much time on them.

While we are often times made to believe that when we write we are speaking to others, in reality we are speaking with ourselves and trying come up with a perspective of the things and around us and affirm that view of the world ? this is the same reason why many of us often wait for reactions to what we have put into words.

In Tumblr, people who relate to your thoughts, like the post or reblog it; in Twitter, they retweet it; on Facebook, they like or share it ? all these are both affirmation by others that they too share our view; they too feel the same way we do; or at least they appreciate how you have expressed your thoughts in words.

Let us be honest with ourselves, we do like it when people like our blog posts, reblog it, share, retweet it and more so, when people comment on them. But should these be the reasons why we should write or blog? If such is the case then for whom are we writing or blogging for?

We cannot deny though that as social beings we take delight in the appreciation by others of what we write or do. And I admit that being appreciated by such in social media truly makes the heart warm. We must consider these expressions as gifts from people who relate to what we write or how we write ? and be grateful for them.

But ultimately the challenge of writing (or again in this case blogging), is how one should remain true to one?s self even when no one else can relate to the thoughts that bother you. And while it is important to write for the benefit of others, it must be based on the need to confront the ideas that bother one?s self.

Reconciling these thoughts, I will try over the next few days to write again. I hope though my other preoccupations would be much kinder with their demand of my time.

(AP) ? It was an hour before the Indianapolis 500, and Dario Franchitti and Tony Kanaan found a quiet corner to prepare for the race. They were interrupted by Parnelli Jones, Bobby Unser and Johnny Rutherford, three of the greatest drivers in IndyCar history.

"T.K. and I were getting our pictures taken. We were like a couple of kids," Franchitti said. "We were with the legends of the sport."

Hey, Dario, welcome to that club.

Franchitti became the 10th driver in the 96 years of Indianapolis to win three or more 500s, picking up his third on Sunday by winning a last-lap trophy dash with Takuma Sato to the checkered flag. Sato tried to pass for the lead going into the first turn, pulled even with Franchitti, then spun hard into the wall after their wheels appeared to make contact.

It let Franchitti sail away to the win on a day that started and ended as a tribute to Dan Wheldon, who won the race a year ago but was killed in an October crash in the IndyCar season finale. Finishing right behind him was teammate Scott Dixon and then Kanaan ? three of D-Dub's closest friends.

"Everybody up there was a friend of Dan's, and that about sums it up. Everybody loved him," Franchitti said as bagpipes played over the public address system. "I think D-Dub would be proud of that one."

Franchitti can be proud of what he's done.

The Scot has long been reluctant to consider his place in IndyCar history, even though his accomplishments have clearly made him one of the greats. He's won the last three championships, has three Indy 500 wins and with 31 career victories is tied with Sebastien Bourdais and Paul Tracy on the all-time wins list.

One more win will move Franchitti into seventh place in the record books. The only drivers ahead of him? The giants of open-wheel racing: three Unsers, two Andrettis and A.J. Foyt, the all-time wins leader.

"I'm very proud of the achievements, whether it's Indy wins, championships, every one of the race wins," he said. "Sometimes I look back, but generally I'm trying to look forward. When I retire, that's the time to look back."

Much of his success has come since 2009, when he returned from a brief foray into NASCAR. Franchitti ran only 12 races in stock cars in 2008, missing a stretch with a broken ankle before owner Chip Ganassi pulled the plug on the team because of sponsorship woes.

He was back in IndyCar the next year, rolling on to become the most decorated driver in the series. Franchitti has 13 wins, two Indy 500s and three consecutive championships since his return.

"He was back to something that he was really comfortable with and around the people that he knew really well," Dixon said. "I think he was actually hungry after that, too, because he wanted to prove when he came back that he was still the driver that he was. He's definitely done that ? maybe a little too much."

It's fitting that his latest feat came at Indy, where Wheldon was on everyone's minds Sunday.

And as his three friends lined up with six laps remaining for the final restart ? Kanaan out front, Franchitti and Dixon second and third ? they couldn't help but wonder if Wheldon was at play.

"Kind of like old times, the three of us back and forwards," Franchitti said. "I thought, 'Dan is laughing at us right now going at it.'"

The elation for Franchitti's win was tempered by the heartbreak for two other deserving drivers. Dixon, a one-time Indy 500 winner, temporarily relocated his family to St. Petersburg, Fla., to support Wheldon's wife and two sons, and Kanaan, 0 for 11 now at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, had openly wept following the death of his former teammate.

"I think a lot of us that were close to Dan, you know, you wanted it that little bit more," Dixon said. "I guess maybe in the back of your mind, you figured he would probably help you out today, too. I think in that situation, seeing how it lined up with the top three, three of Dan's friends, it was a tough one."

The race had developed into what was expected to be a duel to the finish between Franchitti and Dixon. But when the Scot made his final pass of Dixon with two laps to go, he pulled Sato with him and it sapped Dixon's momentum.

So the last-lap pass attempt was Sato's for the taking ? "Job done," he later admitted thinking ? but he couldn't pull it off as he hugged the inside white line through Turn 1. His wheels appeared to touch Franchitti's, he spun into the wall, and Franchitti pulled away past for the win ? this one, just like the first two, under caution.

Dixon crossed the finish line in second, and Kanaan was third, and Franchitti was reminded of the delicate balance in celebrating a team win vs. beating a teammate.

"I want to beat Scott. I know he wants to beat me. I don't think I've met maybe a more competitive individual, except maybe Dan in the early years," Franchitti said. "Out on the track, he's competition, but a teammate, and then afterward he's my friend. I see the disappointment in his face. I see the disappointment in T.K.'s face.

"I think both those guys will get more championships and Indy wins. They're just too good not to. When you beat guys like that, I take that as a big accomplishment because, God, they're not easy to beat."

Kanaan, who used a bold move on a late restart to dart from fifth to first, couldn't hold off Franchitti and Dixon on the last restart. He was OK with the final result.

"I don't think it could have been a better result for Dan," Kanaan said. "Wherever he is right now, he's definitely making fun of Sato, I can tell you that, and he's giving Dario a tap on the back for sure, and he was going to call me a wanker that I didn't win this thing.

"I'm glad this is over. I'm glad that now I hope we can all move on and just remember Dan the way Dan was ? a happy guy, a wonderful friend."

Wheldon's wife, Susie, went to Victory Lane to congratulate Franchitti, who hid his tears of joy behind a pair of white sunglasses worn in tribute because they were Wheldon's preference. She then sat next to Franchitti's wife, actress Ashley Judd, in the backseat of the convertible ? the same seat she had a year ago for Wheldon's win ? for the victory lap around the 2.5-mile oval.

The day opened with car owner Bryan Herta driving a single memorial lap around Indianapolis Motor Speedway in the car Wheldon drove to victory last year. Fans were given white sunglasses to wear on laps 26 and 98, marking the car numbers Wheldon used in his two wins.

It was Susie Wheldon's first trip to any race track since her husband's death, and she watched from Dixon's pit stand with his wife, Emma.

So it was apt on this hot day ? the temperature hit 91 degrees, just one shy of the Indy 500 record set in 1937 ? that one of the most competitive races in history ended with a frantic push from Wheldon's friends. Ten drivers swapped the lead 35 times, shattering the record of 29 in the 1960 race won by Jim Rathmann.

Until the last lap, when Sato made his move for the win, the race was close but uneventful.

The only multi-car accident came when a spin by Mike Conway collected Will Power, who came to Indy as the series points leader and winner of the last three races this season. It was a somewhat frightening accident as Conway, who broke his front wing when he hit one of his crew members on pit road, hit the outside wall and his car tilted on its side before coming to rest. And Helio Castroneves had to deftly maneuver past a bouncing tire that still grazed one of his own wheels.

Besides that, though, the race was slowed by just seven other cautions ? including the one on the last lap ? for 39 of the 200 laps.

The series' next stop is June 3 in Belle Isle, Mich.

7-Eleven Opens Thousands Of New Stores, Aims For World Domination

Somewhere in the world, every two hours, a new 7-Eleven opens.

That?s right; the favorite retailer of highway road stops, street corners and late-night Big Gulp sodas is quietly taking over the world. In 2011, 4,600 7-Eleven stores opened, bringing the retail brand to more than 46,000 locations across the globe. That?s the most units of any company in the world, 7-Eleven Inc. claims.

In today?s busy world, convenience has become a universal value. While other retailers struggle to export their store concept away from home, 7-Eleven has expanded into 16 countries. The company started out in Dallas in 1927 selling blocks of ice but now is based in Japan, where its parent company Seven & I Holdings Co. is headquartered.

Today 7-Eleven is aiming to grow mostly in South Korea, Thailand, the United States and Canada. A total of 3,132 stores opened in those countries last year, according to Seven & I Holdings Co.'s annual report. In the United States, the chain is targeting urban markets like New York City and Charlotte, N.C., hoping to mimic expansion strategies that served it well in Taipei and Tokyo.

All this has led to a "big gulp" of profit. Parent company Seven & I Holdings took in roughly $62.4 billion in sales in 2011, compared with $57.4 billion in 2010 and $33.6 billion in 2006.

But convenience doesn?t mean the same thing everywhere. In Hong Kong, shoppers snack on fresh pasta at the 7 Caf? and pay their phone bills at the store, nicknamed Chat Jai or Little 7.

In Taiwan, locals use the store to pay traffic tickets and utility bills, pump up bicycle tires and send and receive packages.

In Japan, shoppers can receive online shopping purchases at their local 7-Eleven, a concept the company is also testing in the United States with Amazon.com.

Everywhere, the hungry and lazy can score snacks into the wee hours.

"Our format is easily adaptable," said Dan Porter, vice president of real estate for 7-Eleven Inc., the North American branch of the company. ?We can open stores with gas [stations] or without gas, urban walkup stores, stores in strip centers. The flexibility gives us a competitive edge.?

Almost all 7-Elevens in the United States and abroad are operated by franchisees, who are encouraged to tailor their stores to local tastes. "Other convenience stores are cookie-cutter,? said Marty Siegel, 52, a 7-Eleven enthusiast from Flemington, N.J., who has visited thousands of the convenience stores around the country. "7-Eleven makes the look [of the store] interesting."

Siegel, a conductor for New Jersey Transit, tries to visit a new 7-Eleven every time he goes on vacation. "In Manhattan, the 7-Elevens have organic potato chips," he said. "In Monsey, New York, there's one with Bazooka bubble gum from Israel and different kosher products." Siegel?s favorite 7-Eleven is an Edison, N.J., outlet with a retro design from the 1980s.

The localization strategy of 7-Eleven is more than just quirky; it?s a good business model, according to Torsten Stocker, a China-based partner at strategy consulting firm Monitor Group. "[7-Eleven] has local partners who understand the environment in their market very well,? he stated in an email. ?This allows them to grow very rapidly and at much lower investment.?

Not everyone is as enthused as Siegel about discovering the local flavor of a nearby 7-Eleven. In the past year, residents of Nutley, N.J.; West Islip, N.Y.; and Culver City, Calif.; have protested new 7-Elevens, citing potential harm to area businesses and the possibility of unscrupulous late-night visitors.

In April in Portland, Ore., a local Occupy group staged a protest at the proposed site for a 7-Eleven, one of 15 new stores the chain is planning to open in that city. On its blog Stop711, the community group calls 7-Eleven's plan a "corporate take-over."

Portland's Occupiers have not been to Taiwan, it seems. In the country's capital of Taipei, 7-Eleven outlets are so common that many intersections have two or three. "Wherever there is a need, there is a 7-ELEVEN,? Taiwanese franchisee President Chain Store Corp. declares on its website. "Our product logistics system penetrates deep into mountain areas, rural villages, and even secluded offshore islands.?

Indeed, the stores are so ubiquitous that when the Taiwanese government decided to offer free health checkups for residents last year, it collaborated with 7-Eleven to use its stores.

American executives for 7-Eleven hope to transform the brand into as big a cultural fixture in their country. In the United States, 7-Eleven has yet to reach "market penetration," particularly in urban areas, Porter said. Last year 7-Eleven acquired 55 new stores in North Carolina, 183 in Florida and 188 in New York. The company is also persuading owners of other convenience stores to become 7-Eleven franchisees through its business conversion program -- a plan aggravating lovers of New York City bodegas.

To help its franchisees stay on brand, 7-Eleven sends out consultants twice a week, according to Porter. It also issues them a proprietary data-analysis tool (called the Retail Information System), which allows franchisees to track exactly what?s selling in close to real time. "We?re continually keeping up with and deleting slow-moving products," Porter said.

While many retailers today use similar sales analysis tools, 7-Eleven was one of the first chains in the United States to tap the technology in the mid-1990s, following in the footsteps of its Japanese counterparts. Its Retail Information System allowed 7-Eleven to jump on trends like scooters and no-carb snacks more quickly than competitors.

?They are very attuned to changes in daily consumption patterns," Stocker wrote. "They always have new items in stores, including completely new to market products as well as 'exclusives,' e.g. seasonal drinks or food flavors."

In the United States, 7-Eleven is now promoting a "lite" version of its trademark Slurpee and rolling out new foods like fruit, beef tacos, empanadas and salads.

?Through the downturn in the economy, consumers still want quick, ready-to-eat foods,? said Porter. ?They want to go to a place where it's going to be clean and they?ll find the products that they want.?

As other American retailers have shuttered stores, 7-Eleven used the recession to acquire real estate on the cheap to fuel its expansion.

Now, Walmart and Target are eying the success of the convenience store model. This summer Target will open in Chicago its first CityTarget, a miniature outlet that will look more like a 7-Eleven than most of Target's traditional big-box stores. In recent years, Walmart has been opening its small-format Express and Neighborhood stores.

Marty Siegel, the 7-Eleven enthusiast, isn?t worried about how his favorite store will fare in face of the fresh competition. ?7-Eleven has that history. The name itself attracts people when they know they want to get a quick cup of coffee or a pack of cigarettes," he said.

Siegel has ?mixed emotions? about the company?s rapid expansion. "I?m happy there are more 7-Elevens to visit,? he said. ?But it?s not as much of a novelty. If they?re everywhere, it?s no longer a challenge.?

Samsung's GSM-only dual-SM Galaxy Ace Duos kicks off its world tour in Russia next month

While Samsung's Galaxy Ace Duos has already burst onto the scene in India pulling double duty on GSM and CDMA networks, the company today announced its dual-SIM GSM-only cousin will begin shipping in June in Russia, before rolling out to Europe and other regions later. Running Android 2.3 on an 832MHz processor and flashing a 3.5-inch HVGA screen, that dual-SIM capability is the highlight, with Samsung's "Dual SIM always on" feature that forwards calls from the phone number on SIM 2, even if the user is on a call through SIM 1. Bill Bellamy and all others in need of such features can check the press release after the break for a few more details, or the gallery below to get a look from a few more angles of this son of the original Galaxy Ace.
