Brand new island rises from Red Sea depths

Andrew Purcell, online producer

BIGjebelzubair_ali_2011357.jpg(Image: NASA/Earth Observatory)

Throw away that shiny new atlas you got for Christmas - it's already out of date.

Volcanic activity in the Red Sea is causing the formation of a new island in the Zubair archipelago as lava is cooled by the surrounding seawater and solidifies. The underwater volcano responsible is located on the Red Sea Rift, where the African and Arabian tectonic plates are slowly pulling apart.

Yemeni fishermen first spotted lava spewing 30 metres into the air on 19 December and this was later confirmed by satellite observations. Ash plumes were detected by NASA's Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer aboard its Terra and Aqua satellites and NASA's Advanced Land Imager aboard its Earth Observing One satellite, which produced this image. Elevated levels of sulphur dioxide in the region were also recorded by the Ozone Monitoring Instrument aboard NASA's Aura satellite.

By 23 December, the lava mass had broken the water's surface and the new island had begun to take shape. The island is currently around 500m wide and is still growing. The question now is whether or not it has staying power. It may continue to grow significantly as volcanic activity continues, or the fragile lava mass may be broken up by the action of the sea's waves.

Whatever the outcome, volcanic activity in the Red Sea region appears to be on the rise. This is the first time the volcano has erupted in over a century and follows recent eruptions in the Afar Triangle in Eritrea and Ethiopia and the volcanic fields of southern Yemen and Saudi Arabia. In 2007, the nearby Jabal al-Tair volcanic island also erupted for the first time in over a century, killing 8 people.

Deal reached on Georgia Sports Hall of Fame lease

MACON, Ga. (AP) - The Development Authority of Bibb County has agreed to sign a resolution that should mean the museum will remain open in Macon for the next year.

The authority agreed on Tuesday to sign a resolution approving a lease of the hall from the state to the authority.

It also approved an agreement between the authority and NewTown Macon, which will take over management of the hall.

The Telegraph newspaper reports (http://bit.ly/sV6xFr ) attorney Chix Miller says the lease runs for one year with options for two more years. Miller says the Peyton Anderson Foundation has already paid for the first year.

Nearly two years ago, the state put out a request for proposals to take over the sports hall and the Georgia Music Hall of Fame, which was closed in June.

NFL Power Rankings: AFC North outlook

December, 27, 2011

Dec 27

3:30

PM ET

A look at how the AFC North teams stand in ESPN's NFL Power Rankings. I don't have a vote, but I can certainly chime in:

BALTIMORE RAVENS

Power Ranking: No. 5

Record: 11-4

Comment: There was no change in the top six, so the Ravens remain at No. 5 for a second straight week. But Baltimore hasn't been playing at its best recently. Over the past two games, the offense has been hot-and-cold and the defense has looked vulnerable. Still, the Ravens can win the AFC North and secure a first-round bye in the playoffs for the first time in five years if they beat the Bengals.

PITTSBURGH STEELERS

Power Ranking: No. 6

Record: 11-4

Comment: As expected, the Steelers routed the Rams even without Ben Roethlisberger. Pittsburgh has beaten the teams that it's supposed to beat, improving its record to 7-0 this season against teams that currently have losing records. But the Steelers are 1-4 against teams who have clinched playoff berths. That's got to change if the Steelers want an extended run in the postseason.

CINCINNATI BENGALS

Power Ranking: No. 10

Record: 9-6

Comment: The Bengals were the only AFC team that moved in the rankings from last week. Cincinnati jumped three spots into the top 10 -- or should we say somersaulted there -- after ending Arizona's four-game winning streak and securing its third winning season in two decades. But it's tough to move the Bengals too much higher because they're 1-6 against teams that currently have winning records.

CLEVELAND BROWNS

Power Ranking: No. 28

Record: 4-11

Comment: Even though they only lost by six points at the Ravens, the Browns looked like the NFL's worst team at times with their time management mistake at the end of the first half and their offside penalty at the end of the game. Cleveland has lost five in a row, which is its longest losing streak since 2009. The Browns' four wins have come against teams whose combined record is 18-42 (.300).

Dos Santos doesn't want a revenge fight with Frank Mir, to resume training after knee surgery

Dos Santos doesn't want a revenge fight with Frank Mir, to resume training after knee surgery

Junior dos Santos does not want to fight Frank Mir on the basis of avenging Mir's arm breaking win against his friend Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and is set to resume training within the following days after successful knee surgery according to tatame.com.

"I don't need to revenge him. I guess there's no such thing, I guess he (Rodrigo) can do it himself. But I confess I have never picked out opponents and I won't, but if someday I fight Frank Mir, absolutely it'd be an interesting fight," dos Santos said.

Nogueira has since undergone surgery to repair the damaged ligaments in his arm and shoulder. As dos Santos points out, the loss was unfortunate especially when Nogueira had Mir hurt with strikes.?

"He (Rodrigo) had the win in his hands and with Frank Mir knocked out in front of him, and, for some reason, he didn't keep punching him...He'll stay some time off. But we know it already, I know what it'll be the result of it: Rodrigo will comeback and bring much joy to all of us," dos Santos said.

Dos Santos also underwent surgery recently when torn meniscus in his knee was discovered after his fight with Cain Velasquez at UFC on Fox. The surgery is a success and "Cigano" is eager to return to training.

"There're 17 days I've gone through the surgery and I'm feeling fine. I just got to regain confidence and train again, but in 10 days I'll be training normally," dos Santos said.

Dos Santos currently awaits the next challenger for his UFC heavyweight belt, most likely the winner of the upcoming UFC 141 matchup between Brock Lesnar and Alistair Overeem.

New synthetic molecules treat autoimmune disease in mice

Tuesday, December 27, 2011

A team of Weizmann Institute scientists has turned the tables on an autoimmune disease. In such diseases, including Crohn's and rheumatoid arthritis, the immune system mistakenly attacks the body's tissues. But the scientists managed to trick the immune systems of mice into targeting one of the body's players in autoimmune processes, an enzyme known as MMP9. The results of their research appear today in Nature Medicine.

Prof. Irit Sagi of the Biological Regulation Department and her research group have spent years looking for ways to home in on and block members of the matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) enzyme family. These proteins cut through such support materials in our bodies as collagen, which makes them crucial for cellular mobilization, proliferation and wound healing, among other things. But when some members of the family, especially MMP9, get out of control, they can aid and abet autoimmune disease and cancer metastasis. Blocking these proteins might lead to effective treatments for a number of diseases.

Originally, Sagi and others had designed synthetic drug molecules to directly target MMPs. But these drugs proved to be fairly crude tools that had extremely severe side effects. The body normally produces its own MMP inhibitors, known as TIMPs, as part of the tight regulation program that keeps these enzymes in line. As opposed to the synthetic drugs, these work in a highly selective manner. An arm on each TIMP is precisely constructed to reach into a cleft in the enzyme that shelters the active bit ? a metal zinc ion surrounded by three histidine peptides ? closing it off like a snug cork. 'Unfortunately,' says Sagi, 'it is quite difficult to reproduce this precision synthetically.'

Dr. Netta Sela-Passwell began working on an alternative approach as an M.Sc. student in Sagi's lab, and continued on through her Ph.D. research. She and Sagi decided that, rather than attempting to design a synthetic molecule to directly attack MMPs, they would try trick the immune system to create natural antibodies that target MMP-9 through immunization. Just as immunization with a killed virus induces the immune system to create antibodies that then attack live viruses, an MMP immunization would trick the body into creating antibodies that block the enzyme at its active site.

Together with Prof. Abraham Shanzer of the Organic Chemistry Department, they created an artificial version of the metal zinc-histidine complex at the heart of the MMP9 active site. They then injected these small, synthetic molecules into mice and afterward checked the mice's blood for signs of immune activity against the MMPs. The antibodies they found, which they dubbed 'metallobodies,' were similar but not identical to TIMPS, and a detailed analysis of their atomic structure suggested they work in a similar way ? reaching into the enzyme's cleft and blocking the active site. The metallobodies were selective for just two members of the MMP family ? MMP2 and 9 ? and they bound tightly to both the mouse versions of these enzymes and the human ones.

As they hoped, when they had induced an inflammatory condition that mimics Crohn's disease in mice, the symptoms were prevented when mice were treated with metallobodies. 'We are excited not only by the potential of this method to treat Crohn's,' says Sagi, but by the potential of using this approach to explore novel treatments for many other diseases.' Yeda, the technology transfer arm of the Weizmann Institute has applied for a patent for the synthetic immunization molecules as well as the generated metallobodies.

Cancer Patients 'Relying on Charity Handouts' for Fuel | TopNews ...

Macmillan-Cancer-SupportIn an immensely surprising disclosure, it has recently been revealed that scores of people suffering from cancer are seeking more and more support from charity handouts since they are struggling to pay the rapidly increasing fuel bills. The statements can clearly be made evident by sneaking a look at the figures revealed recently by the Macmillan Cancer Support.

In its recent statements, the Macmillan Cancer Support claimed that it had given in excess of ?2,548,563 to more than 12,669 patients suffering from various terminal forms of cancer during this year, marking a clear-cut increase from ?1.4m provided to around 7,369 patients earlier in 2006.

In addition, it has been reported that the charity is seeking an independent review, commissioned by the government, of the existing poverty in terms of fuel so as to place high-priority for patients suffering from cancer.

While expressing her opinion in this regard, Laura Keely, the campaign manager for Macmillan, claimed that it was entirely "shocking" that patients suffering from cancer need such sort of urgent help and assistance.

She added: ?To feel too scared to put the heating on because of soaring energy bills is an unacceptable reality for thousands of vulnerable cancer patients who feel the cold more and spend long periods of time at home?.

Since the establishment of the charity, some 100 years back, Douglas Macmillan, the founder of the charity was keenly devoted on providing all sorts of care and assistance needed by cancer patients by providing packs of coal for the sake of keeping them warm during the time of need.

On the other hand, the charity has claimed that as much as 70% of patients suffering from various detrimental forms of cancer, especially those below 55 years of age, have comparatively lesser income once they are diagnosed with cancer, mainly because their illness proves extremely influential for reducing their aptitude to earn.

The nations weather (AP)

Weather Underground Forecast for Monday, December 26, 2011.

Active weather will continue in the southeastern quadrant of the nation on Monday as a frontal system in the northern Gulf of Mexico begins to shift eastward. Low pressure along this system will lift northeastward across the central Gulf Coast toward the Tennessee Valley with a rich plume of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico. This will lead to steady rain showers with periods of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms from parts of eastern Texas and eastern Oklahoma through western Tennessee and Alabama. Areas experiencing heavy rainfall should expect totals of 2 to 3 inches by Monday night. Heavy rainfall near the southern Mississippi River combined with yesterday 1/4's totals will increase chances of local flooding and flash flooding through the day.

To the north, a strong disturbance passing through the Lower Great Lakes and Northeast late Sunday night through early Monday morning will kick up lake-effect snow showers downwind of the Lower Great Lakes and snow showers in the Northeast. This activity will wind down during the morning as high pressure follows quickly behind this system. Expect generally dry conditions in the Ohio Valley, Great Lakes, Northeast, and Mid-Atlantic during the day.

In the West, precipitation in the Pacific Northwest will spread eastward into northern Idaho overnight leaving behind a couple of inches of snow Monday morning. The next front in a series of a disturbances this week will move across the Pacific Northwest Monday evening with periods of moderate to locally heavy coastal rain, breezy to locally windy conditions, and mountain snow. Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Sunday have ranged from a morning low of -13 degrees at West Yellowstone, Mont. to a high of 85 degrees at Tampa Macdill AFB, Fla.

Man sought in Cottonwood Heights credit union robbery attempt

Cottonwood Heights police are continuing their search for a man who tried to rob a credit union Thursday morning.

It happened shortly before 8:00 a.m. at American United Families Credit Union, 2277 Ft. Union Blvd. The suspect was waiting for an employee of American United Families Credit Union to unlock the building.

"He obviously planned it, knew what time the bank employee got there. He was hiding in the bushes, don't know how long he was waiting, it was twenty degrees outside. So it was pretty well orchestrated by the bad guy," said Sgt. Gary Young, Cottonwood Heights Police.

When a manager arrived and began unlocking the door, the suspect approached her and forced her inside.

The suspect then tied up the woman and ordered her to help him open the vault.?

"He demands money, demands access to the vault, he has a small caliber handgun, possibly a .380, then he ties her up," said Young.

At some point, an alarm was triggered and the suspect left the scene without any money. But police say he was spotted a short time later casually strolling through the parking lot.

Police say fresh snow helped them identify the direction the suspect was traveling and collect footprints for their investigation.

The suspect was described as Hispanic or possibly Filipino, 5'6" tall, with a medium build and acne scarring on his face.

Police consider the suspect armed, dangerous and very daring.

Anyone with information is asked to call (801) 840-4000.

Baby-Mother Bonds Affect Future Adult Relationships, Study Finds (LiveScience.com)

A mother lode of bonding ? or a lack thereof ? between moms and young children can predict kids' behavior in romantic relationships decades later, a new study suggests.

Adding to evidence that even preverbal memories are firmly imprinted on young psyches, researchers found that children who had been more securely attached to their mothers, now grown, did better at resolving relationship conflicts, recovering from those conflicts and enjoying stable, satisfying ties with their romantic partners in early adulthood.

"It's often very difficult to find the lingering effects of early life being related to adult behavior, because life circumstances change," said study author Jeffry A. Simpson, a professor of psychology at the University of Minnesota. "People change, but there's a kernel of stability from early experience in a lot of people."

Simpson and his colleagues reviewed data from 75 children born in 1976 and 1977 as part of the Minnesota Longitudinal Study of Risk and Adaptation, whose mothers received free prenatal care. These firstborn children were assessed at regular intervals with interviews, questionnaires, teachers' and parents' ratings and other observations, culminating with their relationships with their romantic partners at ages 20 and 21.

Measuring the mother-child bond

When the children were 12 and 18 months old, they were videotaped in a stressful lab procedure called "Strange Situation," in which the children were separated and reunited with their mothers. Those who were deemed to have an insecure attachment with their mothers ? meaning they remained distressed throughout the experiment ? reported more negative emotions when trying to resolve major relationship conflicts with their romantic partners two decades later.

Simpson noted, however, that these results were affected by factors such as the children's social skills in elementary school (as rated by teachers) and the strength of their relationships with their best friend at age 16, which had also been monitored.

"We also found that if you were insecurely attached to your mother as a child, but had a really committed partner as an adult, that partner basically protected you from showing dysfunctional behavior in your relationship 20 years later," Simpson said. "It's not like you're destined to be insecure your entire life."

For example, those who had been insecurely attached as infants were more likely to still be with their partners two years later, at age 23, if their partners displayed better "conflict recovery" at 20 or 21, the study said.

The finding that certain relationship patterns can be overcome under the right circumstances, such as with a well-adjusted partner, also depends on the degree of trauma suffered by the child, and his or her overall resilience, said Dr. Victor Fornari, director of the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry for the North Shore-LIJ Health System in New Hyde Park, N.Y.

"It's not just the quality of caretaking and the child's innate temperament, as well as what his biological predispositions are," Fornari said. "Certainly all of this begins in early childhood, but it's not just the quality of the mother-infant relationship that determines the outcome."

Can patterns be changed?

Adults who remember having a poor relationship with their mothers early in life ? whether or not that pattern continued, may want to speak with a therapist to maximize their chances of happy, successful romantic relationships, Simpson suggested.

"Often, identifying the sorts of patterns you may not be able to articulate, can (help) you find someone who is not going to reinforce the way you used to be treated, or the way you used to view the world," Simpson said.

But he added, "It's really important not to blame parents. Usually when there's a negative pattern of behavior with a mother and child, the mother is under financial or emotional stress . . . They're often doing the best they can given their life circumstances."

The study is published in the December issue of the journal Current Directions in Psychological Science.

Pass it on: An infant's bond with mom may affect his relationships later in life, though other factors also have influence.

PFT: Ex-RBs Lewis, Levens sue NFL

New York Giants v Dallas CowboysGetty Images

Since 2006, the league has been using a flexible schedule on Sunday nights to ensure that a competitive and interesting game always will occupy the prime-time slot.? In most weeks of flex scheduling, the decision comes at least 12 days before the games are played.? For Week 17, the decision usually is made after the full Week 16 slate of games has been played, and it?s unveiled no later than six days before the final Sunday.

Unlike all other weeks of flexible scheduling, no game has even tentatively been placed in the 8:20 p.m. ET time slot.? Instead, all games have a 1:00 p.m. or 12:00 p.m. local time kickoff (for three games due to start at 4:15 p.m. ET, it?s a 1:15 p.m. local start), and the NFL will choose one of those 16 games to be the final act of the regular season, since no Monday night game is played in Week 17.

The goal every year becomes finding a game with clear playoff implications that can?t be resolved based on the outcomes of games played earlier in the day.? And that?s not always an easy thing to do.

Last year, only the Seahawks and Rams provided a clear-cut pre-playoff game, with the winner capturing the NFC West and the loser being bounced from the postseason field ? regardless of the final score of any other game played that day.

This year, a game with obvious playoff implications regardless of what happens elsewhere could be hard to find.? Here?s a quick glance at the potential relevance of each game.

Redskins at Eagles:? Since Philly?s shot at winning the NFC East would hinge (if it survives Week 16) on the Giants beating the Cowboys, this game could be irrelevant.

Lions at Packers:? Green Bay?s clinching of the top seed, if they don?t have it after this weekend, would come if the 49ers lose to the Rams in Week 17.? Also, losses by other teams would deliver a Detroit playoff berth, if Detroit doesn?t clinch it this weekend.? Then again, whether the Packers have the No. 1 or No. 2 seed really isn?t that big of a deal in the grander scheme of things.

Ravens at Bengals:? Depending on the Week 16 games, this game could have implications for the AFC North title, the No. 2 seed, and the final wild-card berth.? But those implications could become irrelevant based on the other games played in Week 17, which makes this game less attractive for prime time.

Jets at Dolphins:? Again, Week 16 will provide more clarity.? With the Jets and Bengals each 8-6, however, it?s unlikely that the Jets will have a clear win-and-in, lose-and-leave scenario that would apply regardless of what the Bengals do against the Ravens.

Panthers at Saints:? New Orleans could be playing for the No. 2 seed and/or the NFC South crown, but those could be decided via losses earlier in the day by the Falcons or the 49ers.

Buccaneers at Falcons:? If the Falcons still haven?t clinched a playoff berth after Monday night, losses by others could deliver the spot earlier in the day on January 1.

49ers at Rams:? San Fran is jockeying for the No. 2 or No. 1 seed, which if still relevant after Week 16 could be completely irrelevant before 8:20 p.m. ET in Week 17.

Bills at Patriots:? The Pats are playing for the top seed, but the outcomes of the Steelers and Ravens games could strip this one of any remaining relevance.

Colts at Jaguars:? It?s very highly unlikely that the league would want to showcase the ?Suck for Luck? finale.? In 2008, for example, the NFL had no interest in televising in prime time the Lions? date with 0-16 destiny.

Titans at Texans:? Houston has an outside shot at a bye, but it will depend on the Steelers and Ravens games from earlier in the day.

Bears at Vikings:? This one would be attractive in prime time only for anyone who stayed up too late and drank too much on New Year?s Eve and doesn?t want to miss anything important.

Cowboys at Giants:? If the Giants beat the Jets on Saturday, the NFC East likely will hinge on this game, with the loser most likely being done.? It could be one of the best candidates for the prime-time slot, based on the clarity provided by Week 16.

Steelers at Browns:? Um, no.

Chiefs at Broncos:? The Broncos definitely will win the AFC West by beating the Chiefs.? The only problem is that the Broncos could nail it down before 8:20 p.m. ET on January 1, making the game irrelevant.

Seahawks at Cardinals:? It could be one of the best games of the day.? But it very likely will have zero relevance to the postseason.

Chargers at Raiders:? With the Broncos able to win the division by beating the Chiefs, there?s no reason to hold this one ? unless somehow it would present a clear-cut win-and-in for a wild-card berth for one of the two teams.

And so, for now, it appears that the best candidates are Cowboys-Giants and Chiefs-Broncos.? We?ll know more by Monday night.

In the end, there?s a chance that the NFL will simply have to assume a calculated risk that one or more of the outcomes earlier in the day will screw up the New Year?s Night party on NBC.

North Korea's Nukes: Does the Death of Kim Jong-il Mean Trouble for the U.S.?

As the body of North Korea's "dear leader" Kim Jong-il lies in state at his palace in Pyongyang, his youngest son Kim Jong-un takes control of the country's nuclear weapons program. Despite being named Kim's successor in 2009, Kim Jong-un remains a bit of a mystery to the West. One unanswered question: How much power does the younger Kim wield over the country's military?

To better understand what the succession of power in North Korea means for its nuclear program, Scientific American spoke with Frank von Hippel, a professor at Princeton University's Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs and co-founder of the school's Program on Science and Global Security. Von Hippel, a former assistant director for national security in the White House Office of Science and Technology during the Clinton administration, discusses new evidence of North Korea's nuclear capabilities, the possibility of U.S.-orchestrated regime change, and the amount of plutonium needed to ruin your day.

[An edited transcript of the interview follows.]

How has the nuclear threat out of North Korea changed with the death of Kim Jong-il?
I don't think you would see a nuclear weapon used out of the blue by North Korea. Still, it's hard to tell. There have been incidents in the past few years leading up to Kim's death that have provoked South Korea in particular. Any transition is a time of some instability and that instability might lead to crazy things happening.

What impact will the succession of Kim Jong-un have on the direction the country takes?
There's been a lot of talk for a long time about the North Korean regime collapsing. But the Chinese don't want North Korea to collapse because they are concerned about South Korea absorbing North Korea and then, in effect, the U.S. military having a position on the Chinese border. They see North Korea as a buffer state. But North Korea's direction really depends on their [Korea's own] military and whether they will support the succession of Kim's son.

There have been incidents in the past couple of years?the sinking of the South Korean destroyer and the shelling of an island contested between the two counties?attributed to Kim Jong-un as a way of showing that he's not scared of South Korea and that he's leadership material.*

There's no indication that Kim Jong-un has the background or education (except for a fairly short period of time in Switzerland) to be the one to open up North Korea and bring them in from the cold the way [Mikhail] Gorbachev did for the Soviet Union in the late 1980s. And there's also a question of whether the military would let him do that even if he wanted to. At this point, he's probably not an absolute leader. He's a leader only as long as long as he leads in the direction that the military wants to be led.

In your January 2010 Scientific American article "Time to Ban Production of Nuclear Weapons Material" you write that India, Pakistan and North Korea are increasing their weapon stockpiles. How do we know about the current state of North Korea's nuclear weapons capabilities?
A year ago, Siegfried Hecker [co-director of the Center for International Security and Cooperation [CISAC] at Stanford's Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies] returned from North Korea with some CISAC colleagues. During their stay in North Korea, they were shown a uranium-enrichment facility. They had expected to see an outdated facility based on equipment and designs that were at least 60 years old. Instead, they were surprised by the small, ultramodern, industrial-scale enrichment facility with 2,000 centrifuges. This is comparable to what Iran has. No one has questioned Sig Hecker's findings.

*Shortly after Kim Jong-un was named Kim Jong-il's successor, North Korea conducted a nuclear test large enough to cause a magnitude 4.7 seismic event in that country. Then in March 2010 a North Korean torpedo sank a South Korean navy ship, killing 46 sailors. Months later, North Korea fired about 200 artillery shells at Yeonpyeong, a South Korean island near a disputed maritime border, killing four people. Most recently, South Korea has accused the North of test firing a short-range missile shortly before the announcement of Kim Jong-il's death.

Darwin's Golf Courses Of The Isles Coming To TV

I think it's safe to say Golf Channel could right many the wrongs perpetrated by the Big Break Series by picking up Landmark Media Productions' "The Golf Courses of the British Isles" based on and using the words from Bernard Darwin's classic book.

The description for this 13-part series is followed by a YouTube posted preview:

Using his powerful, often poetic, prose as a narrative guide, "The Golf Courses of the British Isles" will be a video travelogue through the breathtaking courses of Great Britain and Ireland. Stunningly shot and immaculately produced, our series will showcase these spectacular venues in a way that has never been done. In Darwin's writings, the golf courses become living, breathing characters. It's time to tell their stories.

Justice elusive in Baltic states 20 years on

(AP) ? Arturs Spigulis took on the government ? and won. But that's when his frustrations began.

The lawyer persuaded a court to make state-owned Riga Free Port accept his client's tugboat services. But the port refused to honor the ruling, preferring to use its own tugboats exclusively.

When Spigulis complained to Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis, he was told the port was acting according to law. The lawyer sent Dombrovskis a copy of the court ruling ? "and he answers again, 'We consider that the port is run properly,'" Spigulis said.

Twenty years after gaining independence from the Soviet Union, the Baltic nations of Latvia and Lithuania still struggle to operate a functioning justice system despite their enthusiastic embrace of the West and entry into the European Union.

Disputes drag on for years, cronyism is rife, judges are inundated with cases and, as the Riga port case shows, verdicts are often ignored.

Throughout the former Soviet Union ? which collapsed 20 years ago this December ? the idea of a rule of law has failed miserably, with Russia and other countries maintaining a "pocket judiciary" that caters to the powerful and wealthy.

But the Western-leaning Baltics, members of NATO and the EU since 2004, might be expected to be an exception.

"The problem in the Baltic states is that you don't have the law used in that perverse sense (as in Russia), but you have all the real post-Soviet problems of judicial independence," said Andrew Wilson, an analyst at the European Council for Foreign Relations.

Guntars Krasts, a former Latvian prime minister, filed suit against a businesswoman in December 2008 and has yet to have a first hearing in court.

"It's very simple. I just loaned money and never got it back. But for different reasons the judges postpone this case from year to year. It's so obvious that something is behind this, there's no doubt that somebody is paying (someone)," he said.

Six years ago, Elvira Serbakova filed suit against the co-owner of her apartment in Riga, Latvia's capital, to prevent her from selling half of the apartment on the open market. She has yet to receive a judgment. Since court procedures allow participants to skip hearings for medical reasons, the defendant skips every hearing.

"One time she (the defendant) even had a sore eye and couldn't come to court," said Serbakova.

People in the Baltics look poorly on the judiciary. In Latvia, only 36 percent of the population trust their courts, according to a Eurobarometer survey in November 2010, while only 22 percent of Lithuanians trust their judiciary.

"I must say that Lithuania is among those countries where trust in judiciary institutions is lowest" in the EU, said Justice Minister Remigijus Simasius.

For many plaintiffs, the biggest frustration stems from the enormous backlog of cases and overloaded judges.

Millionaire Latvian businessman Jevgenijs Gombergs has been in dozens of disputes over the years as a plaintiff, including one involving a $1 million hedge deal now in its seventh year.

"The huge problem of our legal system is that it's tremendously slow. So your case, when it's over, ends up in a different world ... in a different economic cycle."

The wait for a hearing in Latvia's Supreme Court is now two years, while in the Riga Regional Court the average judge took on about 280 new civil cases in the first half of 2011, and 400 cases for all of 2010.

In Lithuania, the average district court judge took on 488 new civil and criminal cases in 2009, and 421 in 2010.

Sandra Strence, chairman of the Riga Regional Court, said the Baltics suffer from a "distorted understanding of human rights" that grants the individual every possible leniency ? allowing people to skip hearings due to a sore finger and appeal every loss all the way to the Supreme Court.

In the West, higher court costs and lawyer fees prohibit many losers from appealing, while defendants and lawyers who are constant no-shows would be slapped with contempt of court and heavy fines.

Some critics, such as Gombergs, say that Latvian and Lithuanian judges, many of whom remain from the Soviet period, are the core problem since they prefer a convoluted system that can be manipulated for their own benefit ? such as charging "fees" for moving court dates.

In Estonia, the leadership realized early on after independence that Soviet-era judges would be a hindrance to establishing a rule of law and fired most of them ? one of the reasons why Estonia has moved ahead of its Baltic cousins in justice.

Aigars Stokenbergs, a former judge, became Latvia's justice minister in 2010 and immediately undertook a revamping of the system to get judges to work better. But a political crisis forced him to step down in October.

Sitting in his ministerial office last summer, he nodded in admiration as he flipped through a statement from Britain's Royal Court in a civil suit against Latvian businessman and politician, Aivars Lembergs.

"It was a pleasure to read this," he said. "This is what we have to bring into our court system ? a positive attitude and efficient organization."

Canadiens fire coach Jacques Martin (AP)

MONTREAL ? Jacques Martin was fired as coach of the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday, with the storied team undone by sloppy play and in last place in its division.

Assistant Randy Cunneyworth was appointed interim head coach for the rest of the season. Larry Carriere, the assistant general manager, was made an assistant coach.

"The primary reason is the team wasn't performing as well as it should be in our minds," general manager Pierre Gauthier said at a Bell Centre news conference.

The Canadiens (13-12-7) are at the bottom of the Northeast Division. However, they are just two points out of second place in a division led by Boston.

Martin was in his third season with Montreal and 17th in the NHL. He reached his 600th NHL career victory last April making him the ninth winningest coach in league history.

Martin is known for team play and careful defensive hockey, but there were many mistakes this season. The Canadiens are 5-6-6 at home, often blowing third-period leads.

"Especially in the last few weeks, we didn't really know what was coming out of the box every night," Gauthier said. "And the way we were losing the leads and the way we were coaching the games wasn't very consistent, and that's what we hope to change."

There were hints of tension between Martin and Gauthier. After a poor start, Martin's closest ally, assistant Perry Pearn, was fired just before a game Oct. 26.

"We were on the same wavelength right to the end, but that doesn't mean that the team's performances were acceptable," Gauthier said.

The players were told of the coaching change when they arrived at the Bell Centre for their morning skate before their game against New Jersey.

"When we are where we are and expect to be a better team than we've been, you definitely are aware there might be changes," forward Michael Cammalleri said. "For it to be Jacques was somewhat surprising."

"We're in 11th place, that's what went wrong," he added. "I think Jacques was still trying to work on thing and improve the team. I don't think there was anyone not listening to him."

In Cunneyworth, the Canadiens get a younger, more tech-savvy coach, although one who is not expected to make major changes.

"I would hope that my coaching style was similar to the way I played," said Cunneyworth, who was Ottawa's captain under Martin in the late 1990s. "I felt for the most part that I competed very hard."

Cunneyworth was promoted to the NHL club along with assistant Randy Ladouceur after coaching their AHL farm team in Hamilton last season.

"What system is in place doesn't matter if everyone buys in and plays the right way," defenseman Josh Gorges said. "If you only have half the guys doing what's asked of them, everything is in disarray and I think that's where we got to."

"We weren't playing together and doing the things we need to do to win," he added. "And consequently we lost games we shouldn't have lost and changes needed to be made."

Added defenseman Hal Gill: "The bottom line is winning games ? we weren't winning and changes happen. I don't think it was about losing the room or anything like that."

Martin joined the Canadiens in 2009-10 and took them on an improbable run to the Eastern Conference finals where they lost to Philadelphia. Montreal made the playoffs the following year but was eliminated in the first round.

Before joining the Canadiens, the 59-year-old Martin spent five seasons coaching the Florida Panthers and before that nine seasons coaching the Senators, where he left as the career leader in regular-season wins, playoff wins and games. Martin led the Senators to its first President's Trophy in the 2002-03 season.

He also won the NHL coach of the year in 1998-99 and was part of Canada's gold-medal triumph at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics.

Time names 'The Protester' as 'Person of Year' (AP)

NEW YORK ? "The Protester" has been named Time's "Person of the Year" for 2011.

The selection was announced Wednesday on NBC's "Today" show.

The magazine cited dissent across the Middle East that has spread to Europe and the United States, and says these protesters are reshaping global politics.

Last year, Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg got the honor.

Time's "Person of the Year" is the person or thing that has most influenced the culture and the news during the past year for good or for ill. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke received the honor in 2009. The 2008 winner was then-President-elect Barack Obama. Other previous winners have included Bono, President George W. Bush, and Amazon.com CEO and founder Jeff Bezos.

Time said it is recognizing protesters because they are "redefining people power" around the world.

The president of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y., came to that job in 1999 with a stellar resume. Besides being the first African-American woman to earn a doctorate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Shirley Ann Jackson headed the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission during the Clinton administration and was a physicist at Bell Laboratories and other notable research institutions. How did this lightning-quick thinker develop her interest in both science and education policy? Look for a hint in this chapter excerpt (pdf) of a book for young people that chronicles Jackson's early life as someone with "a curious mind and a passion for uncovering the secrets that lay hidden in the world around us."

Read more about her in Strong Force: The Story of Shirley Ann Jackson, Joseph Henry Press, an imprint of The National Academies Press, 2006.

For an in-depth Q&A with Dr. Jackson about our energy future and strengthening science eduation, read "Speaking Out on the "Quiet Crisis"" in the December issue of Scientific American.
