From Dallas to Damascus: The Texas 'straight shooter' who could replace Syria's Assad

He is a ?straight shooter? from Texas who worked as a telecoms executive until November. But Ghassan Hitto now finds himself the presumptive caretaker-leader of Syria as world powers plot the end of Bashar Assad?s crumbling regime.

The American citizen, born in Syria, is the new prime minister of the opposition?s interim government ? the apparatus that the international community hopes will seal the end of Assad?s rule.

Friends describe Hitto, 50, as ?sincere? and ?practical,? but the charismatic technocrat will need all the charm he can muster to unify Syria?s fragmented opposition.

His rapid rise has prompted questions about how the deadly conflict should end and has cast a light on infighting, fueled by regional countries purportedly supporting certain opposition figures.

The Free Syrian Army, one of the key rebel groups fighting Assad?s forces on the ground inside Syria, responded to Hitto?s appointment in Istanbul on March 18 by refusing to recognize his authority.

?The situation there is so dire, I?m afraid for him,? said Mustafa Carroll,?who worked alongside Hitto in Texas as a volunteer at Muslim advocacy groups. ?It?s a big responsibility and it?s very complicated.?

?He?s a straight shooter, very sincere, very well-regarded and a very active community person,? said Carroll, who is director of the Houston chapter of the Council for American-Islamic Relations.

Seen as Muslim Brotherhood's pick
Hitto, a father of four, lived in the U.S. for three decades, most recently on the outskirts of Dallas working as director of operations for telecoms supplier Inovar, where co-worker?Arshad Syed remembers him as "honest" and "personable."

He left Syria in the early 1980s and received an MBA at Indiana Wesleyan University on top of a degree in computer science and mathematics from Purdue University in Indianapolis.

Strongly active in community groups, he was a member of the board of directors at the private Islamic school Bright Horizons Academy, in Garland, Texas, where his wife Suzanne still teaches English.

In November, he made the decision to get involved in the National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces -- the international grouping that seeks to end Syria?s civil war on the condition that Assad is removed from power.

A look back at the conflict that has overtaken the country.

?Like a lot of people living away, he just wanted to help his homeland,? said Carroll.

Hitto?s wife did not return calls, but the academy issued a statement describing him as ?a practical man with great management experience.?

It said: ?He was always open minded and open to debate. He conducted himself with the highest honesty and integrity. His talent for bringing people together for the common good will be missed in our community.?

Hitto, a respected technocrat but an inexperienced politician, won the overwhelming number of votes from those who cast a ballot -- other possible candidates that included a former Syrian regime official -- but some members of the Coalition boycotted the vote in protest at the process.

Not everyone was convinced the opposition needed an interim government, seeing it as yet another organization that could compete for control of a post-Assad Syria.

Official spokesman Walid al-Bunni walked out of the vote in protest and Moaz al-Khatib, president of the Coalition, resigned and had to be persuaded back on board just in time for the Arab Summit in Doha, which began Tuesday.

?Hitto?s whole role has been undermined from the start,? said Christopher Phillips, associate fellow of the Middle East and North Africa Programme at U.K. think tank, Chatham House.

?He?s very much the Muslim Brotherhood?s man, and is seen as such. There was a lot of pressure to get an interim opposition leader in place ahead of the Doha talks, but the way in which it was done, and the choice of very much the man that Qatar and Turkey wanted, has infuriated and alienated just about every key player in the process.?

Represents 'the some of the some'
Salman Shaik, director of the Brookings Center in Doha, said many Syrians "still regard the appointment of Hitto with suspicion." Even if Assad is toppled from power, Hitto is by no means certain of the authority he needs to implement free and fair elections.

?The huge elephant in the room is that there is no guarantee that, if and when the Assad regime falls, that any of the groups fighting in Syria will gather around this official opposition,? said Phillips. ?There are huge uncertainties in all of this.?

Abdulrahman al-Rashed, commentator and general manager of the Al Arabiya news channel, wrote: ?I am confident that Mr. Hitto is a respectable person and that he cares about Syria. But during this difficult time, we want a person who represents everyone and not only some Syrians. Some members of the Syrian coalition decided to choose Hitto but the coalition itself only represents some Syrians. Therefore, Hitto represents the some of the some!?

Yasser Tabarra, the Chicago-based legal adviser to the Coalition, says the interim government will focus on managing the 60 to 70 percent of the country that is liberated and controlled by opposition rebels.

The government would coordinate local management efforts, including establishing law and order, and delivering basic goods and services, Tabarra said.

Two key stumbling blocks remain: whether the Coalition should enter into any form of negotiations with the regime while Assad is still in power, and whether Hitto, an ethnic Kurd viewed as the Muslim Brotherhood's favored candidate, can unite the ideological differences between its liberal and Islamist members.

In his task, Hitto at least has the backing of the U.S.

?This is an individual who, out of concern for the Syrian people, left a very successful life in Texas to go and work on humanitarian relief for the people of his home country,? said State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland after Hitto?s election.

?We?re very hopeful that his election will foster unity and cohesion among the opposition.?

(AP) ? Sidney Crosby has been hit in the mouth by a puck and the Pittsburgh Penguins' star captain will not return to the game against the New York Islanders.

A bloodied Crosby skated off the ice with a towel covering his mouth after Brooks Orpik's slap shot from the point deflected off a stick and hit the NHL scoring leader just 1:28 into Saturday's game.

Crosby, who immediately fell to the ice and tossed his stick in the air, did not return in the first period. Early in the second, the Penguins announced that he would not be back in the game.

Crosby has a history of concussions that have kept him out for long periods during his stellar career.

Pittsburgh was looking for its 15th straight victory, which would be two shy of the NHL record set by Mario Lemieux and the 1992-93 Penguins.

With 15 goals and 56 points, Crosby held a 10-point lead over Tampa Bay's Steven Stamkos in the NHL scoring race.

Keep Your Smartphone Pocketed and Be Bored for Creativity's Sake

Keep Your Smartphone Pocketed and Be Bored for Creativity's SakeSmartphones have definitely struck a blow against boredom?while traveling, in the checkout aisle, when friends are running late. But consider that boring moments are traditionally when your brain can reach out for some new input and ideas.

Brian S. Hall writes at ReadWrite about the findings and thoughts of many creativity researchers and theorists, whom have noticed our tendencies to use the phone in place of other traditional boredom killers?like daydreaming.

But this victory comes at a cost. Spending so much time texting and updating, tweeting and watching, calling and playing at every free moment, from every location, never alone with our thoughts, never allowing our thoughts to drift, impacts our creativity, which in turn can limit our full potential.

Edward de Bono, business consultant and self-described "father of lateral thinking" has authored numerous works on creative thinking. de Bono calls moments of boredom "creative pauses," which allows the mind to drift, and avails the person to new forms of input and understanding.

As noted in the full post, nobody should throw themselves into a terrible meeting for the sake of inspiring daydreaming, but consider letting yourself go without a screen for a bit the next time you're in line, or at a family function that's not quite captivating.

This super herb is considered to be one natural source of weight management and cholesterol management. Because of higher levels of C-reactive proteins (CRP) in their bodies, obese people often have built up a resistance to the production of a hormone called leptin, which helps to control our appetite. Experts believe that the nutrients available in African Mango Extract suppresses appetite and delays the emptying of stomach, which allows for the absorption of dietary sugars, that way regulates blood sugar levels after eating. Adiponectin is a hormone the body utilizes to increase a cell?s sensitivity to insulin. The African mango is believed to increase the body?s ability to produce adiponectin and that way helps to improve fat and glucose metabolism so that the body can use the fat for energy, resulting in weight loss. It is also proved that this all-natural, stimulant-free substance flushes toxins from the body and cleanses the system thoroughly without any side effects.

How much could the cheapest car insurance be for a length of ...

I am planning to by a car and I wanna get my finances together. Knowing fully well that getting a car is one thing and insuring it is another, I wanna find out how much the cheapest car insurance could be for a 6months period.

It depends on the vehicle, year, make, and model. It depends if you have full coverage or liability insurance as well. Best idea would be to start looking at what kind of car you would like to buy, and start calling around to insurance companies to see who gives you the best deal. Progressive is really good, that?s who I have.

Just a suggestion: Make sure you have uninsured motorist coverage as well. Even if you are in someone else?s vehicle, if they don?t have coverage, you yourself are still covered. It saved my butt when I broke my neck in someone else?s car. They didn?t have insurance, and I was able to get all of my medical bills paid because I had the coverage.

How Can I Downsize My Ridiculously Large Wallet?

How Can I Downsize My Ridiculously Large Wallet?Dear Lifehacker,
My wallet bulges with a ton of junk in it. I'd like to downsize it as much as possible, but I'm not even sure where to start. How can I get this wallet down to a reasonable size?

Sincerely,
Leaning Left

Dear LL,
A bulging wallet is no joke. Thankfully, a quick audit of everything in there and some digitizing makes it easy to ditch that bulky lump and move onto something smaller. Here's how to do it.

Audit Your Wallet

How Can I Downsize My Ridiculously Large Wallet? The first thing you need to do is empty out your wallet and give everything you have in there a good once over. Over time, you accumulate a lot of junk?receipts, business cards, sticky notes with random phone numbers, a strange collection of to-dos from 2008?so, pick through everything and throw away everything you absolutely will never need.

Now, you probably still have a few things in front of you. Maybe a couple business cards you need to keep, a few club cards for local stores, credit cards, your ID, insurance forms, membership cards, that free sandwich card you've had for a year, and (hopefully) some cash. A lot of this stuff can be stored on your smartphone. If you're not sure what you really need to keep on hand all the time, financial blog Dumb Little Man recommends sticking to the 1-2-2 rule:

Credit and debit cards are a little easier. If you have more than 2 cards in your wallet you may need to rethink your credit and spending habits. Just carry the two credit or debit cards with the lowest rate on them. You'll be forced to save money if you don't have a plethora of cards to choose from...

I try to follow a 1-2-2 rule: 1 ID, 2 forms of payment cards, and 2 insurance cards (Health and Auto) and that usually does it.

The idea here is to take a look at the contents of your wallet and think about the last time you used a card. Do you really need that dental insurance card in your wallet all the time when you only use it once or twice a year? Probably not, and you can store that elsewhere for the bulk of the year. Obviously your exact needs might change (that sandwich card isn't going anywhere until it's used), but if you slim everything down to just what you need paper copies of, everything else?from club cards to business cards?can be stored on a smartphone. Photo by Charles Kremenak.

Digitize and Combine All Your Extra Cards

How Can I Downsize My Ridiculously Large Wallet? We walked you through the process of replacing you wallet with your phone a couple years ago, but things have changed a bit since then and a lot of great options exist depending on what you need.

If you just need to wrangle in all those club cards, Just One Club Card is still the easiest way to do it. Just enter in up to eight club card numbers, and Just One Club Card makes a printable card with all the numbers on it. It's simple, doesn't require a smartphone, and works for any card with a barcode.

If you want to step it up a little and get everything organized into your smartphone, we like a couple of different options. For the security minded, we like LastPass Wallet on iOS (no Android version yet, but Pocket offers a nice secure system for storing the same info). You can securely store info like credit cards, bank accounts, and even your driver's license. You can also add in notes so you're not carrying out a slip of paper with your PIN number on it.

If you're the type of person who gets and stores a ton of business cards in your wallet, then Evernote Hello is worth a look. All you need to do is snap a picture and Hello adds all the important info directly to your Evernote account so you don't need to carry around those 50 business cards you got at the last conference you attended.

For pretty much everything else, we like Lemon (Android/iOS/Windows Phone) because it can handle tons of the stuff you'd store in your wallet. You can take a picture of club cards, credit cards, rewards cards, and even your receipts. When you do, you're offered up a clean, easy to use interface that makes it easy to access what you need right away. If you're an iOS user, you can also add all your info into Passbook. I've used Lemon for a while with my club cards and while it might look a little weird scanning your phone at Safeway, it works just fine.

Keep Your Wallet from Getting Too Big With a Slimmer Alternative

How Can I Downsize My Ridiculously Large Wallet? If you want to keep you wallet slimmed down in the future you're going to need to ditch your fat old one. For one, everything's probably falling out now that it's stretched out, but if you want to keep up your new habit you want a wallet that can't hold that much.

You have a ton of options here: you can make something yourself with a strip of elastic, a dollar bill, or a binder clip. Otherwise, a simple money clip, or any slim billfold will work. The less you can pack into it, the better.

Good luck,
Lifehacker

Stocks, euro rise after Cyprus banks reopen

By Ellen Freilich

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The benchmark S&P 500 stock index set a record closing high while the euro rose from a four-month low as banks in Cyprus reopened to relative calm on Thursday after the island's controversial bailout that taxed large depositors.

Stocks rose on Wall Street, the S&P closing at 1,569.19, surpassing the previous record high on October 9, 2007.

The market for riskier assets got a lift when the mass panic some feared would ensue when banks reopened in Cyprus after a forced closure lasting nearly two weeks did not occur. The banks opened with tight capital controls in place to keep depositors from withdrawing all their money.

"Banks had a fairly orderly opening in Cyprus and German consumer spending was positived," said Quincy Krosby, market strategist at Prudential Financial in Newark, with more than $1 trillion in assets under management. "That set the tone that allowed European markets to climb which set the stage for the S&P 500 to climb to a new high in intraday trading, despite the fact that much of the U.S. economic data that came out today was below consensus expectations."

The euro rebounded from a recent four-month low against the dollar as month- and quarter-end flows had investors covering bets against the euro. But the euro lost ground during the quarter and analysts saw Thursday's move up as tenuous.

Analysts worry the Cyprus crisis and political concerns in Italy could encourage anxious investors to sell euro zone assets and seek the safety of the U.S. dollar.

While investors "breathed a sigh of relief that the world didn't end when Cyprus reopened its banks, the concern is we are five years into the euro zone crisis and still lurching from crisis to crisis," said Patrick Chovanec, chief strategist at Silvercrest Asset Management Group in New York, which has $11.5 billion in assets under management. "These economies need to grow their way out of debt and the question is where will the growth come from?"

Cyprus's 10 billion euro rescue deal with its European partners at the weekend is the first euro zone bailout to impose losses on bank depositors and has raised the prospect of savers withdrawing money from banks.

The decision to include senior debt holders and large depositors in the Cyprus bailout could have a "lasting effect" on the way investors perceive weaker euro area banks, said Barclays analysts Rajiv Setia and Laurent Fransolet in a research note.

European Central Bank data showed that some customers began to take money out of their accounts in February on the possibility that depositors would take a haircut in a bailout deal. The relative calm as bank employees returned to work helped settle early market jitters.

The euro, which has dropped around 2.0 percent over the last couple of weeks, rose above $1.28 on Thursday, up from a four-month low against the U.S. dollar and a one-month low against the yen

TREASURIES PARADOX

Uncertainty has been amplified by an unexpected rise in German unemployment in March and the lack of a government in Italy following inconclusive elections. Germany's unemployment rise was countered by stronger retail sales and a surprise rebound in Italian business confidence.

European stock markets shrugged off early nerves though as the calm in Cyprus was reported. With benchmark stock indexes in London, Frankfurt and Paris all higher, the FTSEurofirst 300 rose 0.4 percent.

Most U.S. Treasuries and German government bonds - assets that investors turn to for safety - slipped.

Benchmark 10-year Treasury notes were steady in late trade, yielding 1.85 percent. The Treasury's $29 billion sale of seven-year Treasury notes got a fairly weak reception.

"This is the end of the month," Krosby noted. "Although most of the window dressing has taken place, you probably had a bit of window dressing from portfolio managers and especially hedge funds today."

Typically, however, when stocks rise, Treasuries might beat a more decided retreat. Instead, they were only narrowly lower.

Some analysts are perplexed as to why the 10-year Treasury note price has fallen back in the face of the upward move in stocks, Krosby said.

"People wonder what the Treasury market sees that the equity market doesn't," she said. "With the S&P 500 stock index hitting new highs, you'd think the 10-year would match that confidence in the equity market by selling off. But it hasn't."

Treasuries stayed in negative territory after the U.S. government raised its reading on U.S. economic growth in the fourth quarter of 2012, while reporting a bigger-than-expected rise in weekly jobless claims in the latest week.

Gold slipped below $1,600 an ounce on Thursday, as banks reopened in Cyprus without panic, sapping demand for low-risk assets.

Gold hit a one-month high of $1,616.36 last week on concerns the $10 billion euro rescue deal for Cyprus, which will leave big depositors and private bondholders with huge losses, could become a template for future bank bailouts in the euro zone.

Gold slipped below $1,600 as banks reopened in Cyprus, priced at $1,596.31 an ounce by 1945 GMT. Spot prices were still set for a one percent gain in March, their first monthly rise in six months. U.S. gold futures dropped 0.64 percent to $1,596.00 an ounce.

U.S. crude futures hovered above $96 a barrel. NYMEX crude for May delivery was up 51 cents at $97.09 a barrel by 1950 GMT.

London Brent crude for May delivery rose 28 cents to $109.97 a barrel, but posted a loss of $1.09, or 0.9 percent, for the quarter.

New fossil species from a fish-eat-fish world when limbed animals evolved

Thursday, March 28, 2013

"We call it a 'fish-eat-fish world,' an ecosystem where you really needed to escape predation," said Dr. Ted Daeschler, describing life in the Devonian period in what is now far-northern Canada.

This was the environment where the famous fossil fish species Tiktaalik roseae lived 375 million years ago. This lobe-finned fish, co-discovered by Daeschler, an associate professor at Drexel University in the Department of Biodiversity, Earth and Environmental Science, and associate curator and vice president of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University, and his colleagues Dr. Neil Shubin and Dr. Farish A. Jenkins, Jr., was first described in Nature in 2006.This species received scientific and popular acclaim for providing some of the clearest evidence of the evolutionary transition from lobe-finned fish to limbed animals, or tetrapods.

Daeschler and his colleagues from the Tiktaalik research, including Academy research associate Dr. Jason Downs, have now described another new lobe-finned fish species from the same time and place in the Canadian Arctic. They describe the new species, Holoptychius bergmanni, in the latest issue of the Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia.

"We're fleshing out our knowledge of the community of vertebrates that lived at this important location," said Downs, who was lead author of the paper. He said describing species from this important time and place will help the scientific community understand the transition from finned vertebrates to limbed vertebrates that occurred in this ecosystem.

"It was a tough world back there in the Devonian. There were a lot of big predatory fish with big teeth and heavy armor of interlocking scales on their bodies," said Daeschler.

Daeschler said Holoptychius and Tiktaalik were both large predatory fishes adapted to life in stream environments. The two species may have competed with one another for similar prey, although it is possible they specialized in slightly different niches; Tiktaalik's tetrapod-like skeletal features made it especially well suited to living in the shallowest waters.

The fossil specimens of Holoptychis bergmanni that researchers used to characterize this new species come from multiple individuals and include lower jaws with teeth, skull pieces including the skull roof and braincase, and parts of the shoulder girdles. The complete fish would have been 2 to 3 feet long when it was alive.

"The three-dimensional preservation of this material is spectacular," Daeschler said. "For something as old as this, we'll really be able to collect some good information about the anatomy of these animals."

The research on Holoptychius bergmanni was led by Downs, a former post-doctoral fellow working with Daeschler who also teaches at Swarthmore College. Other co-authors of the paper with Downs and Daeschler are Dr. Neil Shubin of the University of Chicago, and the late Dr. Farish Jenkins, Jr. of Harvard University, who passed away in 2012.

Honoring a Modern Arctic Explorer and Supporter of Science

The researchers named the new fossil fish species Holoptychius bergmanni in honor of the late Martin Bergmann, former director of the Polar Continental Shelf Program (PCSP), Natural Resources Canada, the organization that provided logistical support during the team's Arctic research expeditions spanning more than a decade. Bergmann was killed in a plane crash in 2011 shortly after the team's most recent field season in Nunavut.

"We decided to choose Martin Bergmann to honor him, not ever having met him, but with the understanding that his work with PCSP made great strides in opening the Arctic to researchers," said Downs. "It's an invaluable project happening in the Canadian Arctic that's enabling this type of work to happen."

Bergmann's organization assisted the research team with many aspects of expedition logistics including difficult flight operations to carry supplies and research personnel to remote research sites on Ellesemere Island. Daeschler described the pilots as capable of landing a Twin Otter aircraft almost anywhere, as long as the ground was solid ? a condition they tested by briefly touching down the airplane and circling back to see if the tires left a deep mark in the mud.

Daeschler and colleagues intend to return to Ellesemere Island for another field expedition in the summer of 2013 to search for fossils in older rocks at a more northerly field site than the one where they discovered T. roseae and H. bergmanni.

A Deeper Look at the Devonian

Daeschler and a different co-author described another new species of Devonian fish in addition to H. bergmanni, in the same issue of the Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences. More information about this new placoderm from Pennsylvania is available at http://newsblog.drexel.edu/2013/03/27/dusting-for-prints-from-a-fossil-fish-to-understand-evolutionary-change/.

Correction: FDA-Multiple Sclerosis Drug story

WASHINGTON (AP) ? In a story March 27 about a new multiple sclerosis drug, The Associated Press reported erroneously that Novartis' drug Gilenya was launched in March 2011. The drug was launched in October 2010.

A corrected version of the story is below:

FDA approves new multiple sclerosis capsules

FDA approves pill-based Biogen Idec drug for multiple sclerosis symptoms

By MATTHEW PERRONE

AP Health Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Food and Drug Administration said Wednesday it approved a new drug from Biogen Idec to control multiple sclerosis in adults with hard-to-treat forms of the disease.

The twice-a-day capsules, called Tecfidera, offer a new option for multiple sclerosis, a debilitating disease in which the body attacks its own nervous system. Cambridge, Mass.-based Biogen Idec already sells two other drugs for the disease, but both require injections.

There is no cure for multiple sclerosis and most patients experience relapses of symptoms, including loss of balance, weakness in arms and legs, and blurred vision. Over time patients usually become weaker and less coordinated. More than 2 million people worldwide have the disease, with about 400,000 of them in the U.S., according to Biogen.

The FDA said it approved Tecfidera based on two studies showing patients taking the drug had fewer relapses than patients taking a dummy pill.

The approval gives Biogen a new product in an increasingly crowded field of multiple sclerosis drugs.

The biotech drugmaker already sells the once-a-week multiple sclerosis injection Avonex. It also markets the once-a-month injection Tysabri through a partnership with Elan Corp. PLC of Ireland. However, Tysabri's severe side effects have curtailed its use.

Tecfidera is designed to be taken orally, which could make it a preferred option for patients and doctors.

A Biogen executive said Wednesday that its three drugs would be used to treat different groups of patients.

"Multiple sclerosis is a reasonably complex disease and we think there are a lot of needs out there," said Tony Kingsely, a vice president at Biogen. "By having three drugs out there I think we can address a lot of those needs."

Kinglsey said the company will announce the pricing of the drug when it begins shipping in the next week.

Novartis launched the first pill-based multiple sclerosis drug, Gilenya, in October 2010. Sanofi won FDA approval for a second pill, its drug Aubagio, last September.

The top-selling drug for the disease worldwide is Copaxone, which is made by Teva Pharmaceutical Industries. That injection had sales of nearly $4 billion last year, according to Teva's latest financial report.

Avonex and Tysabri had annual sales of $2.7 billion and $1.5 billion in 2011, the most recent year for which Biogen has reported annual sales.

Biogen Idec Inc. shares rose $5.59, or 3.2 percent, to close Wednesday at $182.68.

"House of Cards" star Kate Mara joins Johnny Depp in "Transcendence"

By Lucas Shaw

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - Kate Mara will join Johnny Depp, Paul Bettany and Rebecca Hall in the cast of "Transcendence," the upcoming sci-fi film from Oscar-winning cinematographer Wally Pfister, Alcon Entertainment announced on Wednesday.

Alcon which most recently made "Beautiful Creatures," is financing and producing the project.

Mara, the older sister of actress Rooney Mara and daughter of New York Giants co-owner John Mara, just gave a career-defining performance in "House of Cards." She plays Zoe Barnes in the Netflix series, which will soon enter production on its second season.

This film is a big priority for Alcon given the talent and filmmakers involved. Pfister, Christopher Nolan's cinematographer for the past decade, is making his directorial debut with the film. Nolan, his wife Emma Thomas and Aaron Ryder are executive producing.

Jack Paglen wrote the script, which was developed by Straight Up Films and been shrouded in secrecy. TheWrap obtained some plot details in December, revealing that it involved a scientist whose brain is uploaded to a supercomputer.

Straight Up Films' Marisa Polvino, Annie Marter and Kate Cohen will produce the film, which Warner Bros. will distribute domestically and Lionsgate will distribute internationally.

Heat still not fixated on winning streak

The Los Angeles Lakers made it look easy when they racked up win after win after win for an NBA-record 33 straight games.

The Miami Heat, not so much.

Those Lakers of 1971-72 won 17 games during that streak by 15 points or more. The Heat take more of a grind-it-out approach, often getting into trouble before flipping a switch and pulling away.

"We're going to get everybody's best shot because of the streak," Heat guard Mario Chalmers said.

That's why instead of savoring the 27 in a row they've already won, the Heat are bracing for perhaps one of the biggest road tests so far in their pursuit of those Lakers. Miami plays at Chicago on Wednesday night, a renewal of a rivalry that, on paper, certainly has lost some of the sparkle it had a year or two ago.

The Bulls still don't have injured point guard Derrick Rose back in the lineup and have lost 13 of their last 22 games. Still, the Heat expect a playoff-type, rough-and-tumble meeting.

"Our historic run is about winning championships," Heat star LeBron James said. "That's what we want to be known for. It's part of a process. Whatever comes in between that, we can be excited about it. We didn't have a goal in mind to say, 'Let's go on a long consecutive win streak,' but our goal is to win every game when we are on the floor."

In recent days, that hasn't been easy. Boston had the Heat down by 17 early and 13 in the fourth quarter. Cleveland put Miami in a 27-point hole, and in Detroit and Charlotte, the Heat trailed by 11 before pulling away. On Monday night, the Orlando Magic and Heat were tied late in the third quarter before James keyed a 20-2 run that changed everything.

"We like knowing we have that switch," guard Dwyane Wade said. "We just don't want to use it too much."

Chicago has already beaten the Heat once this season, on Miami's home floor. On Friday, the Heat head to New Orleans, where the Hornets just snapped Denver's 15-game winning streak. And Sunday's game at San Antonio is against not only the Western Conference leader and potential NBA Finals opponent, but also likely will have huge implications for the No. 1 overall playoff seed.

Whether the opponent is a playoff team like Chicago or a lottery-bound club, James said the approach has been steady.

"It has been tough all year," he said. "It hasn't been easy for us at all. Every team has given us their best. We know that Chicago is going to be a tough game for us, and playing in that building. We want to come out with our game plan ... and give ourselves a chance to win."

Since Miami landed James and Chris Bosh to play alongside Wade in the summer of 2010, no team has confounded the Heat more than the Bulls, and it's not even close. The Heat and Bulls have played 14 times since then, each team winning seven, and Miami averaged only 90.1 points in those games. That's six points less than they averaged against anyone else in that span, and 11 points shy of what they typically score against the rest of the league.

"You can't necessarily gauge them against other teams," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said Monday night, after Miami topped Orlando 108-94. "When they play against us, it's highly competitive. We've played them in the playoffs. All of our games have been physical and hotly contested. You have to deal with the physical aspect but also the mental aspect of staying with it, grinding possessions."

Moments after the Heat extended their winning streak to 27, Spoelstra urged his team to be " grateful for this opportunity and stay in this moment."

That's his way of saying, yes, enjoy the moment but don't lose sight of the only goal that matters ? another NBA title. That's what the players talked about in the locker room after the Orlando game, as they wolfed down chicken, pasta and vegetables and headed to the bus.

"To be honest with you, we don't really think about the streak," Heat forward Udonis Haslem said. "People might find this hard to believe, but if you start thinking about a streak, that's when you slip up. If you start thinking about the Lakers' record, that's when you're going to slip up."

Besides, streaks don't come with championship rings.

"Not at all," Haslem said.

How to watch TV with the HTC One

HTC One TV

Powered by Peel, the HTC One helps discover what to watch - and then ?deftly turns into an infrared remote control

A common thread among smartphone manufacturers this year is the inclusion of an infrared port and television remote control and show discoverability. That is, you use your phone to control the TV and change channels and volume and stuff. You also have a way to see what's on, and to easily tune to it.

Know what? It works pretty darn well.

To be clear, we're not talking about watching TV on your HTC One. We're talking about watching TV with your HTC One. See the difference? The idea behind all this (for HTC as well as other manufacturers) is that there's a pretty good chance you're sitting there with your phone in your pocket anyway. Might as well put it to use. Whether that's a good idea? Well, we'll leave that for another time.

For now, let's take a deep dive into the TV app on the HTC One.

Hawaii Wedding Photographers

Obviously not all couples are the same which works well for the Hawaii wedding packages market. Many services allow for customization based on the client's needs since all are different and people desire ceremonies that cater to their own ideals. The extravagance of a ceremony is really based on not only the customer's wants, but also their budget. For those interested in the idea yet not certain as to what might be affordable, the internet can be a useful tool. There are a plethora of Hawaii wedding packages websites which offer advice and prices on everything from flowers to location. Some packages even include suggestions on accommodations for the wedding party, families and guests, and in many cases the accommodations are included in the overall cost of the package.

Research is key for couples who want to find the package that is right for them. Hawaiian ceremonial services know that there are clients who want everything which is why there are packages that provide onsite coordinators, flowers, minister, solo musicians, a professional Hawaiian wedding photographer, limo, cake, chairs and an arbor for the beach, and more. For those willing to spend a little extra, the can receive a reception, complete photography session while touring an island, massage, hair and makeup for bride, a wedding certificate, the list goes on offering weddings as diverse as the couples.

The average price for all inclusive services can run upwards of four thousand dollars. There are companies that take into consideration that some clients will desire more finery, while others want more of the basics. For that reason many services usually include at least two different packages for clients to choose from. For example, one option allows for the clients to stay a resort style condominium, and another offer a resort grade hotel. Options such as these help the clients to feel more relaxed as the duration of the stay is similar to that of a Hawaiian vacation. Prices that include accommodations such as these often incorporate an entire package and can range anywhere from one hundred twenty a night to over four thousand.

The most popular locations for the exchanging of vows in the Hawaiian Islands are Maui, Oahu, and Kauai, with Maui being the most sought after. The Hawaiian Islands are so appealing because of the tropical setting and gorgeous landscapes. The Island's histories are steeped in myths and legends which provide an essence of mystery and romance. The Island's mysticism attracts many people, especially those who are seeking a beautiful location for starting their lives together. Included among the diverse Hawaii wedding packages some can be found that advertises by way of encouraging customers to incorporate the spirit of Hawaii into the ceremony, one that honors the island's heritage, traditions, and myths. Ceremonies such as these have taken into consideration that not everyone desires all the bells and whistles and would rather incorporate more if the Island's natural beauty. For couples who want an exotic setting yet not a lot of flare, packages can be found which provide low-key and informal ceremonies that include wedding services or simply just vow renewal. Companies such as these provide the necessities, such as the minister and a small set up on a beach. For a little extra cost clients can choose to have photos taken and leis for the bride and groom.

Most packages include Hawaii wedding photographers for recording the entirety of the service, or simply for capturing those special moments. A fact couples should keep in mind when planning a tropical ceremony is that top wedding photographers can be booked up to a year in advance, so planning ahead is important. Wedding photography began as an art form in the 1820's. People did not commonly pose for pictures during the ceremony or for documenting the service at all until the late nineteenth century. This was mainly due to the photographer's large and rather cumbrous equipment. Traditionally, recording the entirety of the event did not come into vogue until the advent of more streamlined camera equipment in the 1970's. This paved the way for the wedding photographers in places such as Hawaii by allowing for more ease of transporting equipment on beaches.

Two different types of photography are popular for ceremonies which are traditional and photo journalistic. Traditional are more classic in nature and focus on capturing the overall scenes of the ceremony, while photo journalistic tend to focus more on capturing emotions and telling a story. Hawaii wedding photographers are very popular among people that flock to the islands. When choosing a photographer, potential clients can choose to look through portfolios to find a look that is right for them. Many can be found through the internet and allow clients to peruse portfolios with ease and get a taste for all the beautiful landscapes and settings of the islands for truly, "The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork" (Psalm 19:1). While gaining a sense of the memories of the ceremony, Hawaii wedding photographers can help to preserve those special moments in breathtaking ways.

Bing Offers Recommendations for SEO-Friendly AJAX - Deon Designs

Bing has announced support for HTML5 pushState as a way to implement AJAX on a site in a way that enables Bing to crawl and index the URLs and content. Since Google has supported this implementation since early 2012, site owners finally have an AJAX option that can be crawled and indexed by both major search engines in the United States. (Of course, the ease of implementing is another story altogether.)

Bing tells me that while they still support the #! version of crawlable AJAX originally launched by Google, they?re finding it?s not implemented correctly much of the time and they strongly recommend pushState instead.

Why AJAX Can Be Difficult to Crawl and Index

One common use of AJAX is to make the web site experience faster for a visitor, but this implementation can have drawbacks for SEO. Imagine, for instance, a page with several tabs of content.

tab example

A web developer could implement this one of several ways.

  • A separate URL for each tab ? with this implementation, when the visitor clicks a tab,?a new request is made to the server for a completely new page. The URL structure might look something like:
    • http://www.example.com/my-web-page?tab=two
    • http://www.example.com/my-web-page?tab=three
  • CSS for each tab ? with this implementation, the server returns the contents of all tabs with the first page request. When the visitor clicks a tab, the CSS rules cause the browser to hide the contents associated with one tab and show the contents associated with clicked tab. Only one URL is associated with the page, like this:
  • AJAX rending of each tab ? with this implementation, when the visitor clicks a tab, only the changing portion of the page is replaced. The URL structure might look something like:
    • http://www.example.com/my-web-page#tab=two
    • http://www.example.com/my-web-page#tab=three

As with most things, pros and cons exist for each option. A separate URL for each tab is easy to share and bookmark and is easy for search engines to crawl and index (they can extract all of the content from each page and have a separate URL to associate with each), but reloading the entire contents of each page can be slow.

CSS for each tab is also easy for search engines to crawl and index and in some cases, the combined page may rank higher than the same content broken into three pages (due to consolidated incoming links and relevancy signals). But the request for all of that content at once can be the slowest of all to render and users can?t share or bookmark the page with a secondary tab as active.

AJAX rendering is fastest and enables easy sharing and bookmarking. But search engines have historically had the hardest time with this implementation. Search engines have trouble extracting content from AJAX/JavaScript calls (although Google has been getting better at it). And # in a URL started as a way to link to content within a page and so search engines tend to ignore everything in a URL past the #.

Crawlable AJAX

In 2009, Google put together a way to make AJAX crawlable. With this method, a the web page would use #! rather than #, like this:

For a normal user agent, such as a browser, the # would trigger the AJAX portion of the page, just as it would in a normal AJAX implementation. However, a search engine user agent such as Google would see the #! section of the URL and then request a special version of the page (replacing #! with ?_escaped_fragment_=). In response, the server would return a static version of the page with the contents normally rendered through JavaScript. The benefits of this implementation were that search engines could associate a separate URL with each set of content and even better, could extract all of that content.

In 2011, Bing began supporting this implementation?and included a checkbox in their webmaster tools so site owners could let them know it was being used on a site (they?ve since removed the checkbox as they?ve gotten better at detecting and crawling it).

As with the other implementations, this has its drawbacks as well, not least of which is the complicated implementation. ?Bing?s latest blog post notes:

?Developers had to rely on overly-complicated protocols such as ?crawlable AJAX?, which uses the #! (?Hash bang?) signature.? This was meant to make AJAX development easier in regards to SEO, but it actually complicated things both for search engines as well as webmasters trying to implement, maintain, and debug their AJAX-driven web pages and applications.

With pushState, we can fully omit the complexity of transforming between ?pretty? AJAX URLs and ?ugly? static URLs. Search Engines will crawl and index the same URL used by you customers. We are back to business as usual for SEO, including pretty SEO well-understood URLs schema?http://domain/path/file?name=value_parameters. This helps you focus on the usual SEO activities (links, page content, etc.) without having to do worry about complex page transformations.?

I asked Bing?s Fabrice Canel, who wrote the post, if Bing still supports the #! version of AJAX URLs, and he told me:

??We are still supporting the #! crawlable AJAX method but as I said, we do not recommend it at all and we really prefer pushState which is far easier for webmasters and web developers to adopt and maintain.?

HTML5 pushState

With HTML5 pushState, pages can take advantage of the best of both worlds: URLs without # (so search engines can easily index them) and dynamically rendered content for only the change portion of the page (to make things as speedy as possible).

With pushState, URLs look like the first example (a separate URL for each tab), but operate like the third example (AJAX rendering of each tab and the resulting URLs look as follows:

  • http://www.example.com/my-web-page?tab=two
  • http://www.example.com/my-web-page?tab=three

There are other, more complex ways of getting to this same result, such as Hijax, but pushState can be much easier.

Google has been supportive of HTML5 since the beginning?(Google?s?Maile Ohye in particular began recommending it conferences in early 2012) and recently published a video in support of HTML5 pushState.

YouTube Preview Image

In the video, Google?s Matt Cutts noted:

?A correctly implemented site that uses pushState typically doesn?t need any extra support in order for us to be able to crawl it. We do support both [pushState and #!] and we do handle both standards? but [pushState] is something that I would encourage you to look into and it can be quite helpful in making sure things can be crawlable.?

And now Bing has announced support as well.

Of course, HTML5 has its drawbacks as well, notably that not all older browsers support it, and can require significantly engineering resources to implement (as you?re replacing the current site?s HTML implementation).

If your site uses AJAX-based URLs (either the # versions noted above, or versions that don?t change at all when ?content changes) and are subsequently the site is not fully crawled and indexed and you?re looking for solutions, HTML5 pushState is definitely worth looking into.

If your site uses the crawlable #! URLs and isn?t having any trouble being indexed, then you can leave things as they are for now. Both Google and Bing continue to support this implementation.

If you?re considering adding AJAX to your site, make sure you think through the implementation carefully and take into account what content search engines can extract and whether the URLs are indexable.

Napoleon and Josephine's engagement ring sells for $949,000

The engagement ring the young Napoleon "must have broken his wallet" to buy for his fiancee Josephine shattered expectations today at the Osenat auction house in France when it sold for close to $1 million, Osenat's expert Jean-Christophe Chataignier said.

The winning bidder, who wanted to stay completely anonymous, paid $949,000, almost 50 times the $20,000 Osenat had expected to bring in. Including the buyer's 25 percent commission to Osenat, the total price for the ring was $1.17 million.

"In my wildest dreams, I did not think we would outsell the estimate by more than 47 times," said Osenat's Emily Villane, who led today's auction. "We based the estimates in our catalog on the actual market value of the ring, minus Napoleon and Josephine provenance. It is not our job to tell bidders how much they should pay for the historical premium."

There was intense interest in the ring, she said. In addition to the 300 people in the Fontainebleau auction house, about 50 more international bidders were hooked up by phone.

Osenat, which is in Fontainebleau, outside Paris, also received more than 40 written bids by email from the U.S. alone, she said.

The auction house set up extra phone lines and hired 10 additional people to be prepared for the sale.

"It was 15 minutes of relentless bidding," Villane said. "We opened at 10,000 euros, I raised it to 50,000 euros. From then on it was going up by 10,000. When the hammer went down at 730,000 euros there was a huge applause."

The sale was timed to coincide with the 250th anniversary of Josephina's birthday.

The golden ring is in an 18th century setting called "toi et moi," "You and Me," with opposing tear-shaped jewels -- a blue sapphire and a diamond. The carat weight of the two gems is little less than a carat each.

Osenat already had clues that it had a blockbuster on its hands several days before the auction.

In addition to a great deal of interest from bidders around the world, Chataignier said there were also requests for private spaces a floor above the salesroom, where the superrich could watch and bid without being seen.

The ring may seem unimpressive considering the names attached to it are an emperor and empress, but it actually illustrates Napoleon's passion for his future queen.

"At the time Napoleon was a young and promising officer, but he was not rich. He must have broken his wallet to buy this quality ring," Chataignier told ABCNews.com.

The auction was also held on a unique day, celebrating the 250th anniversary of Josephine's birth, said historian David Chanteranne, the editor in chief of Napoleon I Magazine.

Napoleon met Josephine, (Rose Tascher de la Pagerie as she was known then) in September 1795. She was 32 years old, six years older than Bonaparte. At the time she was the rich and stylish widow of Alexandre de Beauharnais, an aristocrat who supported the French Revolution but died on the guillotine. Her first marriage produced two children, Eugene and Hortense, who Napoleon later adopted.

According to Napoleon's memoirs written at St. Helena, he met Josephine when her son Eugene came to ask him for the right to keep his father's sword. Napoleon said yes, and Josephine invited him to her apartment in Paris to thank him. Napoleon was immediately smitten, and within the first couple months of their relationship had fallen completely in love with her. He wrote about this in his memoirs:

"Everyone knows the extreme grace of the Empress Josephine and her sweet and attractive manners. The acquaintance soon became intimate and tender, and it was not long before we married."

The wedding day was March 9, 1796, but the honeymoon lasted only 36 hours. Napoleon left to lead the French army on a successful invasion of Italy, but during this absence he wrote frequently, sometimes twice a day.

"Since I left you, I have been constantly depressed," one letter says. "My happiness is to be near you. Incessantly I live over in my memory your caresses, your tears, your affectionate solicitude."

"How happy I would be if I could assist you at your undressing," the Emperor writes, "the little firm white breast, the adorable face, the hair tied up in a scarf a la creole."

Napoleon begged Josephine to join him in on his conquest in Milan, but Josephine was often unresponsive, preferring Paris where her kids attended school to the front line in Italy. And the there was her Parisian affair with Lt. Hippolyte Charles.

When Napoleon learned about Josephine's affairs, his letters changed in tone: "I don't love you, not at all; on the contrary I detest you -- You're a naughty, gawky, foolish slut."

The marriage didn't last, but "Josephine continued to treasure the ring and gave it to her daughter Hortense, later Queen of Holland, through whom it came down to her son, Napoleon III and his wife Empress Eugene to whose family this relic ring still belongs," claims Chataignier.

The buyer broke up something of a set. The ring had been on display alongside other historic treasures, including portraits of Napoleon's son and a sword given to the emperor by King Henry IV.

New pope revives question: What is a 'Latino?'

Pope Francis is being hailed as the "first Latino pope." He's a native Spanish speaker born and raised in the South American nation of Argentina. But for some Latinos in the United States, there's a catch: The pope's parents were born in Italy.

This European heritage is reviving debate in the United States about what makes someone Latino. There's no doubt that Pope Francis is Latin American. And he's certainly an inspiration to Spanish-speaking Catholics around the world. Yet in some eyes, that does not mean "Latino."

These views seem to be in the minority. But they have become part of the conversation in the United States as the Latino world considers this unique moment.

The discussion indicates just how much Pope Francis means to Catholic Latinos around the world.
