FXI's Cotton Candy finally starts to ship, hopes your sugar rush remains (video)

Way back at CES, FXI's Cotton Candy was a sweet looking slice of Android and / or Linux mini-PC. Since then, the pendroid club has seen quite a few more join its number. However, if you were one of the faithful that got on-board with FXI's particular take on the form-factor early, then that little box of ARM Cortex A9 joy is finally available to buy. We've received word that pre-orders are now finally ready to be fulfilled, with early buyers getting developer versions. This of course means that you might pay a small price for such eager adoption, with a list of limitations including mixed video playback and streaming support, as well as potential issues with power from USB hosts. That said, we suspect that if you've been able to wait this long, these are small prices to pay, along with the $199 asking price, naturally. Give the source a whirl to get your teeth into one now.

[Thanks, Michael]

Young cancer survivors forego medical care due to costs even if ...

Another affirms how important it is that everyone pay more money for worse health insurance - except people who actually have diseases. A new paper says many survivors of adolescent and young adult cancers avoid routine medical care because it's too expensive, despite the fact that they have health insurance. The results in CANCER indicate that expanding insurance coverage for young cancer survivors may be insufficient to safeguard their long-term health without efforts to reduce their medical cost burdens.

Medical care in the years after a cancer diagnosis is particularly important for detecting any long-term health conditions associated with their cancer treatment; however, little is known about the extent of care that survivors of adolescent and young adult cancers receive in the years after their diagnosis and treatment.

To investigate, Anne Kirchhoff, PhD, MPH, of Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, and her colleagues analyzed national survey responses from younger adults ages 20-39 years: 979 who were diagnosed with cancer between the ages of 15 to 34 years and were at least five years from diagnosis, compared with 67,216 controls who had no cancer history.

While adolescent and young adult cancer survivors had similar rates of being uninsured as those without cancer (21 percent versus 23 percent), survivors were 67 percent more likely to forgo routine medical care due to costs in the previous year. Cost barriers were particularly high for younger survivors aged 20 to 29 years (44 percent versus 16 percent of controls) and female survivors (35 percent versus 18 percent of controls). Survivors reporting poorer health also experienced more cost barriers.

"The Affordable Care Act is an important step to ensuring that adolescent and young adult cancer survivors have health insurance coverage and improving their health care access; however, they need to be educated about the importance of regular health care to monitor for late effects," said Dr. Kirchhoff. "Furthermore, even the insured survivors in our study reported unmet health care needs due to cost barriers, suggesting that adolescent and young adult cancer survivors need resource supports beyond health insurance."

Republicans to Pollsters: Too Many Democrats In Your Surveys

It has become a recurring refrain among some Republican pundits and observers each time a new poll shows President Obama or downballot Democrats doing well: Check the party composition.

Critics allege that pollsters are interviewing too many Democrats -- and too few Republicans or independents -- and artificially inflating the Democratic candidates' performance. Pollsters counter that the results they are finding reflect slight changes in public sentiment -- and, moreover, adjusting their polls to match arbitrary party-identification targets would be unscientific.

Unlike race, gender or age, all demographic traits for which pollsters weight their samples, party identification is considered an attitude that pollsters say they should be measuring. When party identification numbers change, it's an indication of deeper political change that a poll can spot.

"If a pollster weights by party ID, they are substituting their own judgment as to what the electorate is going to look like. It's not scientific," said Doug Schwartz, the director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute, which doesn't weight its surveys by party identification.

The debate has been amplified as the pace of public polling has accelerated after party conventions. Pollsters are finding diverging results, with consumers of political media left to decide which surveys better reflect the reality on the ground -- or to accept the polls most favorable to their partisan leanings. New, less expensive methods for taking polls have led to a proliferation of surveys with varying results, so both sides have ample data to fit their desired narrative.

Gripes about the party-ID composition of poll samples are certainly not new: Eight years ago, Democrats were claiming polls showing a surge in Republican identification did not accurately reflect the makeup of the electorate.

Now, it's Republicans making the case their voters are undersampled.

Schwartz, whose institute conducts polls in battleground states for CBS News and The New York Times, asserts that pollsters who weight according to party identification could miss the sorts of important shifts in the electorate that could be determinative.

"A good example for why pollsters shouldn't weight by party ID is if you look at the 2008 presidential election and compared it to the 2004 presidential election, there was a 7-point change in the party ID gap," Schwartz said. Democrats and Republicans represented equal portions of the 2004 electorate, according to exit polls. But, in 2008, the percentage of the electorate identifying as Democrats increased by 2 percentage points, to 39 percent, while Republicans dropped 5 points, to 32 percent.

Asked specifically about GOP complaints regarding the party-ID composition of public surveys, Schwartz said: "They're the ones trailing in our swing-state polls."

"There are more people who want to identify with the Democratic Party right now than the Republican Party," he added.

Many Republicans, however, think pollsters are wrong to assume their results, which in some cases mirror the 2008 electorate, are accurate.

"Far too many of the public and media polls have set their likely voter screens and models to something looking more optimistic than the 2008 turnout model," GOP consultant Rick Wilson wrote in Sunday's New York Daily News, "which even Obama's most dedicated partisans think is highly unlikely."

John McLaughlin, a Republican pollster and consultant to GOP candidates, told the conservative National Review last week that Democrats are lobbying media pollsters "to weight their surveys to emulate the 2008 Democrat-heavy models."

"The intended effect is to suppress Republican turnout through media polling bias," McLaughlin said.

Lee Miringoff, director of the Marist College Institute for Public Opinion in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., is unconvinced. "Why would pollsters want to look inaccurate?" Miringoff asked rhetorically in a phone interview.

Miringoff, who is conducting three battleground-state polls each week for NBC News and The Wall Street Journal, called the focus on party identification "too narrow."

"It's an easy target in a sense because you can look at the last [election], see the difference and jump on board," he said. Marist, like Quinnipiac, does not weight its results according to party ID.

Not every Republican pollster finds fault with the publicly-available surveys. Dan Judy, vice president of North Star Opinion Research in Alexandria, Va., told National Journal, "A lot of the media organizations this cycle seem to have gotten better."

"Most of the media polls are good, professional polls," Judy added, "in terms of making sure that the way their samples are constructed are fairly consistent."

But the GOP narrative that most public surveys are biased endures. On Monday, the news website Buzzfeed interviewed a Virginia-based blogger who re-weights public polls to reflect the partisan trends reported by automated pollster Rasmussen Reports. Dean Chambers, the blogger, then presents the adjusted data in charts on his website, unskewedpolls.com.

As of late Monday, Chambers' website claimed that an average of polls conducted since Labor Day show Mitt Romney leading Obama, 52 percent to 44 percent. The website and its findings were trumpeted on the Drudge Report, the conservative-leaning news-aggregation site that has tended to highlight polls more favorable to Romney and less favorable to the president.

The pollsters continue to stand by their results, but the complaints are nevertheless getting through. Marist's Miringoff, for instance, was lambasted by conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt earlier this month over a poll in Hewitt's native Ohio that the radio jock deemed "biased" for its 10-point party-ID advantage for Democrats. Miringoff admitted to National Journal that he is now taking note of the party-identification results in the polls he is conducting.

"I look at our party-ID spread because I want to anticipate the reaction," he said. He added: "I guess it makes for good pundit sport at this point."

European Sovereign Debt Crisis: Up Next, a German Real Estate ...

Where there?s one cockroach, there?s fire! Wait, that?s not quite right. Where there?s smoke, there?s a lot more cockroaches! No, that?s not it either. Let?s see . . . ah, yes . . . where there?s smoke, there?s fire!? And when you see one cockroach you can bet there are more lurking out of sight. So which analogy ? smoke or cockroaches???best describes German real estate? It may well be both. Real estate prices in Germany suggest that trouble is afoot. Pay attention: This should worry every investor in the world.

As the European sovereign debt crisis drags on, I have begun to focus my attention on Germany. Recently, I came across a table of German real estate price changes. Consider the quarterly price changes of the following seven-city index of real estate prices:

Germany: Real Estate Prices for Seven Cities

Germany: Real Estate Prices for Seven Cities

Sources: Bundesbank, BulwienGesa AG, CFA Institute.

First thought? Is a real-estate bubble in the offing? ?If so. . . . Oh my! Germany is considered the bulwark of the European Union. While everyone discusses Germany?s fiscal strength and probity, fewer investors may realize that the German dream might well be structurally unsound.

How could Germany be experiencing a real estate bubble in the midst of the euro crisis? It?s quite simple, actually: the European Central Bank has lowered rates in response to the global financial crisis that began in 2008, and then dropped rates dramatically in response to the euro crisis,?which didn?t gain steam until late 2009, and then pushed rates near zero in late 2011 ??where they have remained. As illustrated in the chart below, real estate prices have risen in conjunction with falling rates for the same seven-city index (the data are quarterly figures through June 2012).

Germany: Seven-Cities Real Estate Prices vs. Five-Year Bond Yields

Germany: Seven-Cities Real Estate Prices vs. Five-Year Bond Yields

Sources: Bundesbank, BulwienGesa AG, CFA Institute.

Now, just in case you think that this seven-city index is an anomaly, consider the Bundesbank?s 125-city index through 2011 (the data are annual figures through December 2011).

Germany: Real Estate Prices for 125 Cities

Germany: Real Estate Prices for 125 Cities

Sources: Bundesbank, BulwienGesa AG, CFA Institute.

And all this growth in real estate is happening even though the German population is declining. That?s right: Germany has a population in decline.

Germany: Population in Decline

Germany: Population in DeclineSources: Statistiches Bundesamt, Haver, CFA Institute.

So, where is all the new real estate demand coming from? In part, the periphery of the European Union. As noted in a recent piece in Der Spiegel, many Italians are now investing in German real estate as a way to protect their money against the backdrop of the euro crisis. In a worst-case scenario???if the euro were to break up, then the German deutschmark would be reintroduced, and it is widely believed that the currency would gain materially against the remaining euro member currencies (to balance trade deficits). So in a eurozone breakup scenario, a German real estate investor would pick up a substantial currency gain. And shy of that (unlikely) scenario, investors in the European periphery can avoid the instability of their homeland.

Demand is also coming from institutional investors. As noted in this clip from Press TV, institutional real estate investors are snapping up German real estate and driving up prices and rents. The underlying momentum for the creation of a real estate bubble is now established. However, we can?t simply look at real estate prices in isolation as purely a monetary phenomenon without acknowledging the structural flaws at work within the eurozone. For starters, because it is a monetary union only, trade imbalances within the eurozone will persist. Since Germany has maintained a persistent trade surplus within the eurozone, Germans have strengthened their household income, employment, and the overall economy at the expense of weaker eurozone neighbors.?Currencies in a ?free exchange rate? regime normally offset these imbalances by adjusting until trade approaches balance. However, Germany has entered a fixed exchange-rate system within the euro zone and, as such, it works to Germany?s advantage by preventing its trading partners from revaluing or devaluing their currencies.

This faulty structure has led the eurozone straight into crisis. Germany is now left with two choices:?First, the country can unwind the euro and go back to the deutschmark. This would force the value of the deutschmark to rise relative to the remaining euro area currencies and correct the imbalances ??thereby reducing exports, employment, and income. When employment and income decline, what do you think happens to the housing market? Hold that thought.

Second, and more likely, Germany and the EU will forge ahead with some form of fiscal union. Some think that there is already a covert fiscal union as the ECB is buying sovereign bonds of select peripheral nations. As such, it is the mechanism to engage in transfers from the stable, northern eurozone economies to the weaker, peripheral nations which, in effect, is somewhat similar to what would happen in a formal fiscal union. By way of example, the United States was born with a monetary union, fiscal union, and political union. As such, people in Wisconsin regularly fund people in Illinois. Also, people in Utah regularly fund people in Colorado. And so on. This occurs through nationalized programs such as welfare and housing in which money is taxed from all tax-paying citizens nationally and redistributed in wide variety of ways that differ from natural geographic boundaries of states.

Likewise, in whatever form a fiscal union takes, if money goes from country A (Germany) to country B (say, Spain), then it is a fiscal union. The only issue is how efficient or dysfunctional it is. In any event, to the degree there is a fiscal union (or quasi-fiscal union), then the Germany economy will be harmed on the margin ??meaning that the country will face less income and less employment than it otherwise might.

And when employment and income decline, what do you think happens to the housing market? Deja vu!

Now, in all fairness, Germany does have a more flexible real estate market than many other European economies, so creating additional supply is much easier in Germany than it is in, say, the UK. Yet prices are escalating despite this flexibility. All things considered, does it now make a little more sense why the EU just wants to kick the can down the road?

My personal view: This won?t end well.

What makes a "good" home cleaner label? | Queen of Green | David ...

Photo: What makes a

Choose cleaning products that have a full ingredient list.

Fact: You have no idea what chemicals are in your home cleaners.

How do I know? Over 10,500 of you took our home cleaners survey. You entered information on labels for over 15,000 products!

But only 42 per cent of those cleaning products displayed a full list of ingredients. And many of those lists were confusing.

It's not your fault.

Currently, there are no requirements in Canada for manufacturers to disclose all ingredients or warn consumers about chronic health and environmental hazards associated with their products. Yet, 82 per cent of you said ingredients and environmental or health concerns, including fragrance sensitivities, were the most important factors when choosing cleaning products.

So how do you know which dish soap, laundry soap or toilet cleaner is the safest for your family and the fishes?

In a non-toxic world, I believe a home cleaner label should include:

  1. A third-party certified eco-label, e.g. EcoLogo, Leaping Bunny, Green Seal and/or EcoCert
  2. Official biodegradability designation, e.g., biodegradable test OECD 301 D or E
  3. A complete and specific ingredient list with full disclosure of chemical names, including what's in "parfum" or "fragrance"
  4. Company contact information

Subscribe to the Queen of Green digest

I was relieved that 61 per cent of you said your dish soap had an ingredient list because this is the one home cleaner I've been unable to concoct successfully. (Aside from a handful of soap nuts thrown in a pickle jar and topped up with water, which works surprisingly well!)

In addition to the above criteria, the eco-friendliest store-bought dish soap will also come in a refillable, recyclable container (or, better yet, a recyclable container made from recycled contents) and be more viscous, because too watery means you'll waste more.

See our full list of recommendations to protect your health and the environment from unnecessary exposure to toxic chemicals in household cleaners. And, see how your home cleaners rank with EWG's Guide to Healthy Cleaning.

Have you found an eco-friendly dish soap that meets these requirements?

Sincerely,

Lindsay Coulter, Queen of Green

Attempted attack on Israeli border highlights militant presence in Sinai

One soldier from the Israel Defense Forces was killed and another wounded in an attack on the Sinai border today, while three militants were killed.

Israel said it disrupted an attempted large-scale terrorist attack on its southern border today, underscoring the ongoing threat posed by militants in the Sinai peninsula, who have stepped up their attacks since Egypt's popular uprising last year.

Israel's military said it killed three militants who crossed into Israel midday near Har Harif with weapons and explosive belts. One soldier from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) was killed and another wounded in the exchange of fire. The last time an Israeli soldier was killed by militants from the Sinai was August 2011, according to the IDF.

Israel has long been concerned about security in the Sinai peninsula, which it captured in the 1967 Six-Day War but ceded after making peace with Egypt in 1978.

Former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak's regime responded harshly to terrorist attacks in the peninsula, particularly after a 2004 attack that killed 34 in the tourist city of Taba, as The Christian Science Monitor's Dan Murphy pointed out recently. But with Mr. Mubarak's ouster last year and the formation of a new government dominated by the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood, Israel has voiced concern that Egyptian security in the Sinai has taken a backseat.?

The deterioration in security has been bad for both sides, however. In August, 16 Egyptian border guards and soldiers were killed, which prompted Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi to?summarily dismiss Defense Minister Mohamed Hussein Tantawi and other top military leaders.

Israel has been building an extensive fence along the Sinai border, which is nearing completion. The Israeli soldiers attacked today were guarding a section of this fence. It's not the first time it has been attacked; in June, two militants attacked IDF contractors involved in building the fence, eliciting a strong statement from Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak that the new Egyptian president must "swiftly" put an end to attacks from the Sinai.

While many have speculated that the Egypt-Israel peace deal could falter under Islamist rule in Cairo, the Sinai poses a challenge for both nations. If they don't find a way to work together, they both may suffer.

Watch Joe Benavidez?s win over Miguel Torres (VIDEO)

With Joe Benavidez fighting Demetrious Johnson for the UFC's first flyweight title at UFC 152 on Saturday, spend some time watching Benavidez in the fight that earned him his first title shot. After Benavidez won this fight over Miguel Torres at WEC 47, he fought (and lost to) Dominick Cruz for the WEC bantamweight title.

If you want to skip past the introductions, go to the 2:10 mark. The second round starts about seven minutes in, and the finish is around the nine-minute mark.

Something to remember about this fight is that at this point, Torres had just shockingly lost the bantamweight title to Brian Bowles. He was still considered a top pound-for-pound fighter. Stephan Bonnar and Todd Harris, who were calling the fight, were surprised as Benavidez dominated the bout.

Will Benavidez score another big win on Saturday night? Speak up in the comments, on Facebook or Twitter.

Murder by 4: WRITING ADVICE, ROBIN STYLE

copyright 2012, Robin P. Waldrop

"Write like the wind, edit like an architect." That is what a dear friend, mentor, and great author, Aaron P. Lazar once told me.

As a child, I read anything I could get my hands on and I loved writing and telling stories. But as I grew older, I found less and less time to read or write. I missed these activities, but I was busy raising my children and attending to other responsibilities.

After I grew older, writing became less of a priority, and was subsequently put on the back burner for many years while I raised a family. As my children grew to adolescents, I once again found time to read and I even started penning short stories.

One cozy winter day, my teens were at school and I became consumed by the urge to read. I picked up a book a friend had given me, poured a cup of coffee, and snuck away to my little corner. Disappointment quickly set in when it became apparent I could not even get through the first chapter. I grew completely frustrated and closed the book. I had no idea what the plot was supposed to be, and the writing was horrible. The author had mixed tenses, and in one loooooooong paragraph, the author changed POV?s three times. I had no idea which character was speaking at any given point. I didn?t know much about the technical side of writing at the time, but I knew enough to understand the book was fatally flawed.

Determined not to let anything get the best of me, I waited a few days and picked up the book again. After thirty minutes of reading ad re-reading, I slung the book across the room. My husband asked me what was wrong. I told him about the writing and how even I could write better than that garbage. Evidently, he took me seriously. He calmly asked what I was waiting for. I just laughed, and told him I was not a writer anymore. However, that day he planted a seed, and the more I thought about it, the more I wanted to try it.

Eventually, I sat down at the computer, and started writing what I loved to read?FBI suspense/thrillers. I admit, it took a few minutes to get the creative juices flowing, but once I did, the pages started filling up.

After a few days, it all suddenly came to a screeching halt when I realized I did not have a clue about the technical side of an FBI agent?s career. I had not done an outline, or character sheets, or research, or anything. (Mistake #1) Readers tend to frown when the book they're reading does not seem realistic, even though it is fiction.

Again, my husband said, ?Get on the Internet. I know you know how to do that. You?re on it all the time.? After giving him the evil eye, I went to work. It did not go well, to say the least. I was lost in this huge mass of information, and did not know whose advice to follow.

I decided to search for authors who wrote in my same genre. From there I looked at their work and biographies, and I contacted the ones who seemed to have the most in common with me. I told them I was new, and asked for advice, and to my surprise, several were happy to oblige.

I continued writing, and as soon as I finished the manuscript, I started querying agents. (mistake #2) I had been so anxious to be the next great author, I did not take the time to edit my novel. It was so full of grammatical errors no one would touch it. I queried more than sixty agents and all of them ended with rejections.

I was about to give up (mistake #3), until I met a great friend, John Francis, also a writer, and he suggested I write some short stories and offer them for free on various sites to get my name out there. I joined several writers? sites, met more great people, and began implementing what I had learned. The next thing I knew, I had a blog, a mentor, beta readers, an editor, and almost two thousand new friends on facebook.

I know, I know, you are asking yourself what does all of this has to do with me? In short, this is what I have learned.

First: you need to figure out what kind of writer you want to be, and then you must do research on the subject, and lots of it, before you even think about starting your novel.

Second: you have to figure out who your characters are and develop them, because if you do not, you will end up with a poorly written book.

Third: make time every single day to write. Whether it is thirty minutes, an hour, or five hours. It is not as important what you write, but the fact that you write something every day. The only way to become a better writer is to write.

The fourth and final thing is always finish what you start. There is no better feeling in the world than when you type those final two words?the end.

Oh, and I also want to add; when you become successful?and you will as long as you never give up?please don?t ever forget what is was like when you were a newbie. You will meet people along your journey who will remind you of where you were at one time or another. Take time to help them in some way, even if it is only to give them a little advice. Remember, writing is all about enlightening or entertaining the world, it is not about how much money you can make.

Tebow's real passion? Board games

There are a lot of demands on Tim Tebow?s time: football, charity work, speaking at religious gatherings, shedding his clothes and rolling enormous truck tires across vacant lots. But when he finds some time eventually he?s going to get himself a wife and settle down.

But what kind of a girl will that be? Tebow cast some light on the subject in his recent interview with Vogue Magazine (he grappled with a tire as part of the photo shoot for the article). Tebow:

?I?ve been blessed to have an amazing mom and two amazing sisters?so they set a very high standard,? he says. ?Obviously looks play a big part. Being attracted to someone plays a big part, but there?s also so much more than that for me. It?s about finding someone sweet and kind?and that has a servant?s heart. It?s about finding a girl who likes me for me, and not because of what I do or who I am or the name.?

Tebow says there is no Mrs. Tebow on the horizon just now. Perhaps it?s due to his wild and crazy bachelor lifestyle: Tebow told Vogue that he and his bothers and sisters play board games all night.

?Playing Taboo, Catch Phrase, Mafia, Monopoly till three or four in the morning,? he says. As for adjusting to life in New York, he?s buying a house near the Jets? training facility in New Jersey. ?The city itself is a little overwhelming,? he says. ?It?s going to take a while before I actually build up the courage to drive in.?

If you?re looking for a change of pace, Tim, may I suggest my favorite game as a child: Chutes and Ladders? It?s a perfect metaphor for your pro career so far.

Hush! Speech jammer among 2012 Ig Nobel winners

BOSTON (AP) ? For anyone who's ever been tired of listening to someone drone on and on and on, two Japanese researchers have the answer.

The SpeechJammer, a device that disrupts a person's speech by repeating his or her own voice at a delay of a few hundred milliseconds, was named Thursday as a 2012 winner of the Ig Nobel prize ? an award sponsored by the Annals of Improbable Research magazine for weird and humorous scientific discoveries.

The echo effect of the device is just annoying enough to get someone to sputter and stop.

Actually, the device created by Kazutaka Kurihara and Koji Tsukada is meant to help public speakers by alerting them if they are speaking too quickly or have taken up more than their allotted time.

"This technology ... could also be useful to ensure speakers in a meeting take turns appropriately, when a particular participant continues to speak, depriving others of the opportunity to make their fair contribution," said Kurihara, of the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology in Japan.

Still, winning an Ig Nobel in acoustics for the device's other more dubious purpose is cool too.

"Winning an Ig Nobel has been my dream as a mad scientist," he said.

As usual, the ersatz Nobels were handed out by real Nobel laureates, including 2007 economics winner Eric Maskin, who was also the prize in the "Win a Date with a Nobel Laureate" contest.

Other winners feted Thursday at Harvard University's opulent Sanders Theatre included Dutch researchers who won the psychology prize for studying why leaning to the left makes the Eiffel Tower look smaller; four Americans who took the neuroscience prize for demonstrating that sophisticated equipment can detect brain activity in dead fish; a British-American team that won the physics prize for explaining how and why ponytails bounce; and the U.S. General Accountability Office, which won the literature prize for a report about reports.

Rouslan Krechetnikov, an engineering professor at the University of California Santa Barbara, and graduate student Hans Meyer took home the fluid dynamics prize for research into the sloshing that goes on in coffee cup as it's carried.

Like many projects that have won Ig Nobels in the past, it started in a casual conversation based on everyday observations.

Krechetnikov and Meyer were taking a coffee break at a conference last year when they watched as others milled around trying to prevent staining their clothes.

The science of sloshing liquids has been studied before ? in rocketry, for example, shifting weight can destabilize a missile or rocket ? but no one's ever really studied coffee as it splashes around, Krechetnikov said.

"It is one of those cases where we were interested in explaining the phenomena, but not changing it," he said.

The reason coffee spills?: A person's walking speed, their mental focus and, surprisingly enough, noise.

Are there practical applications? You could design a better coffee cup by using what Krechetnikov calls "a series of annular ring baffles arranged around the inner wall of the container to achieve sloshing suppression," although those solutions are impractical.

"We just wanted to satisfy our curiosity and, given the results, to share what we learned with the scientific community through peer-reviewed literature," he said.

The 22nd annual Ig Nobels ceremony, with the theme "The Universe," featured the usual doses of zaniness, including the traditional launching of hundreds of paper airplanes and the world premiere of an opera entitled "The Intelligent Designer and the Universe," about an insane wealthy man who bequeaths his fortune to have someone design a beautiful dress for the universe.

"Personally, this goes along with my view of science," Krechetnikov said. "There should be a fun side to it."

Busy signal: The disappearing pay phone | rabble.ca

An extinction-level event is underway.?

Lumbering?Cretaceous?Paleogene?pay phones that once roamed the planet are experiencing a massive die-off, their vandalized corpses fossilized ? or stripped for scrap metal.

There is virtually nowhere to call for help in the poorest neighbourhood in the country. I could locate but one twelve buttoned, quarter-eating, graffiti covered, hard plastic sentinel standing near the corner of Main and Hastings -- perhaps the last of its kind in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside.

The two largest telecom companies in Canada?are demanding?that local pay phone call rates be doubled to $1, or they will start tearing out the few pay phones that remain. Bell Canada and Bell Aliant are petitioning the CRTC?to raise the rates, apparently because pay phones have become unprofitable in the wireless age.?According to Telus, payphones are regularly subject to vandalism and repairs can cost up to $5000.

Many people in Canada have cell phones. But sizable minorities do not and many have no landline either. This leaves pay phones as the only way to make a call. For the most marginalized, it is the only way to make a call for help.

Big Telecom: Phoning it in

?The poor and smart-phone-less do not seem like a desirable, profitable market for telecom companies. However, the many other aspects of the business -- mobile phone, data, Internet and cable -- have never been so profitable. As a matter of public safety, the CRTC should require phone companies to maintain a healthy population of pay phones in every neighborhood, subsidized from the more profitable aspects of communication. Installing outdoor phones for public health and safety is an accepted practice. There is a phone at either end of the Lions Gate Bridge, for suicide prevention.

As I have argued?previously?regarding the demise of Canada's international shortwave public radio, we should not rush to decommission older communications infrastructures under the misguided presumption that we are all digitally connected in this wireless world. This amounts to a disconnection for some. ??

Telephone communications are considered so crucial to society and public safety that they have been heavily regulated in Canada for over a century. Phone companies have been required to build extra capacity into their landline networks, to handle increased call volumes in times of national emergency or natural disaster. Not so with cell phone networks. During the 20th?century, many provincial governments have subsidized the hooking up of small, remote communities where the infrastructure costs would prove unprofitable for corporations. Telecom companies are now quietly leaving the phone off the hook on their responsibility as primary conveyors of our conversations.

Given that nearly a quarter of all Canadians do not own a cell phone, public pay phones are still needed. Many of the poorest and most marginalized have no stable access to any phone.

911 is a Joke in this Town

?This pay phone decline is most dangerous for sex trade workers.?In cities across North America, the sex trade has been pushed to the urban margins. In the 1990s, the "Shame the Johns" campaign displaced Vancouver sex workers from more populated retail and semi-residential neighbourhoods into industrial areas that are deserted after dark. ?

The Missing Women's Inquiry conducted a?study?that heard from dozens of sex trade workers, advocates and support workers from Vancouver's Downtown Eastside (DTES). While many community groups did not participate in the study, the Commission heard a unanimous message that barriers to phone access exacerbate what is already dangerous work:

"Few pay phones exist in the Downtown Eastside ? there need to be more phones available, including pay phones ? there need to be more phones on the street and they just aren't there anymore."

My friend "S" told me that the removal of the phones has made the DTES, where she has lived for years, a more dangerous place. After dark it is almost impossible to call for help, "You need to flag someone down [to call 911]."

"S" described some horrible assaults, where access to 911 and urgent assistance could have made a difference. She wants to speak out, but fear of retribution makes her reticent to use her full name. She said that access to pay phones is crucial for "working girls." A few may have cell phones. Some sex trade worker support organizations have distributed 911 enabled mobile phones (dubbed "sex cells"). However, a bad date may steal or break a cell phone to prevent a call for help.

The same pattern of banishment to industrial wastelands and accompanying increase in violence against and murder of sex trade workers has been seen in many other cities, including Ottawa, where?Sex Trade Outreach Mobile (STORM) workers have been distributing 911 enabled phones?to sex trade workers over the summer. Local residents were asked to donate their old cell phones to the effort.

Touch tone marginalia: Tourists and merchants

?Telus operates one of the last pay phones in the Downtown Eastside. I have spoken to friends, neighbours and colleagues, as well as conducted my own rather unscientific census. In the DTES, pay phones are now not unlike "Highlander" -- 'there can be only one.' As recently as December of 2010, the?Thunderbird counted?19 pay phones in the DTES. While that count may have used a different search area than my rather less rigorous efforts (a blind guy looking for a phone booth) there is still a negative trend.

According to Telus, shop owners have requested the removal of phones near or within businesses due to vandalism and "use by drug dealers and sex trade workers." Travelers even?complain on-line?about the renowned lack of phones in the neighbourhood.

People's phone booth

?A couple of years ago and after significant public pressure, Telus installed "curfew phones" which would only call 911 after 9pm. Noticing that even those phones were disappearing, some community activists decided they were not just willing to hang up.

Tenuously clinging to a piece of plywood outside of?Spartacus Books?at 685 East Hastings Street, one will find a weathered, white, plastic phone, available for anyone to make local calls. Free. The volunteer-run bookshop's collective provides radical books, free Internet access, a washroom and last year?created the People's Phone Booth. Collective member Peter Gill said Spartacus maintains an efficient, cost-effective method for dealing with vandalism (mostly arising from the bar across the street). "In the back of the book store, there is a box of cheap phones." When the one out front gets broken, they just reach in the box and hook another one up.

A friend and revolutionary, Guillaume, struck upon the idea with some other collective members as a small response to the dislocation following the 2010 Olympics. He originally used Voice-over-Internet-Protocol and smashed his hand while building the booth. The phone is now on a regular landline, Guillaume is on the front lines in another town and his hand is fine.

Spartacus will happily sell you a variety of political literature, and will accept your old, donated, functional phones for a new life serving the people.

I'm sorry, your call cannot be completed as dialed

Phones are part of the architecture of cities. As pay phones disappear, so to do we further disappear to the little bubble of small screen and white ear buds. Remaining pay phones become the exclusive domain of the poor, lost, desperate or injured. The massive, continent-sized octopus of copper wire and switching networks, snaking across ocean floors, will now only carry signals of those who can afford to buy their own transmission devices.

The telephone came into being in Canada, and it is here where pay phones are being slowly ground to bits on the anvil of wireless profits.?

In Brantford, Ontario, Alexander Graham Bell inaugurated telephone communication by placing a call to an adjoining room in his parents' house. In 1876, he famously, if less than politely, demanded the presence of one of his workers. "Watson, come here! I need to speak to you." Now the Canadian companies named for him are jacking up the rates and yanking out public phones in cities and neighbourhoods across the country, especially the poor and marginalized ones that are most in need of them.

Please, stay on the line.

Australia lawmakers reject gay marriage plan

Daniel Munoz / Reuters

Gay rights activists hold a rainbow flag during a rally to support same-sex marriage in central Sydney August 11.

By NBC News staff

Australian lawmakers voted on Wednesday by more than two-to-one against a proposal to legalize gay marriage.

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported that 98 members of the House of Representatives ? including Prime Minister Julia Gillard -- voted against the plan, while 42 had supported it.

However Labor party politician Anthony Albanese, who supported the law, said that "all the figures show that there is majority community support on this issue... and I think at some future time, parliament will catch up with the community opinion," the broadcaster reported. "Just a few years ago there wouldn't have been the support of anything like 42 votes on the floor of the national parliament for a marriage equality bill," Albanese said.

ABC reported that the head of the Australian Christian Lobby, Jim Wallace, had in a statement thanked those politicians who ?as a matter of conscience, voted to ensure that marriage remained between a man and a woman."

ABC noted that Senator Cory Bernardi, of the center-right Liberal party, had resigned as a parliamentary secretary to his party?s leader Tony Abbott, after suggesting during a Senate debate Tuesday night that the next step after same-sex marriage would be to allow ?three or four people that love each other being able to enter into a permanent union endorsed by society -- or any other type of relationship.?

He then added that there were ?even some creepy people out there... [who] say it is OK to have consensual sexual relations between humans and animals,? Bernardi said, according to ABC. |Will that be a future step? In the future will we say, 'These two creatures love each other and maybe they should be able to be joined in a union.? I think that these things are the next step.?

Supporter still 'confident'
The Age newspaper reported that advocates of same-sex marriage would now seek to persuade states within Australia to change the law.

"Now the federal parliament has effectively brushed the wishes of a majority of Australians aside, the states and territories will take the lead, making me confident we will see same sex marriages performed somewhere in Australia by the end of the year," Australian Marriage Equality convener Alex Greenwich said, according to the paper.

The Age added that in August Tasmania?s lower house had passed a bill to legalize gay marriage, which would now go to the state?s Legislative Council.

The paper said that Congress was to vote on another same-sex marriage bill Thursday.

Australia?s Foreign Minister Penny Wong, whose partner Sophie Allouache gave birth to a baby girl in December, said Wednesday that she was hurt by the claim from some senators that children of same-sex couples were worse off than those of mixed-gender couples, The Age reported.

"I do not regret that our daughter has Sophie and I as parents," Wong added. "I do regret that she lives in a world where some will tell her that her family is not normal. I regret that even in this chamber, elected representatives denigrate the worth of her family.?

Metal Hip Implants Not Linked To Cancer, 7-Year Study Shows

By Debra Sherman
Sept 14 (Reuters) - All-metal hip implants, which have been shown to have high failure rates and cause a host of other health problems, were not linked to cancer seven years after implantation, new data show.
Concerns have grown in the medical community that the so-called metal-on-metal hip implants shed metal particles through wear on their ball-and-socket structure. Many patients who have received the devices have had elevated levels of cobalt and chromium particles detected in the bloodstream, leading some doctors to worry about their risk of developing cancer.
Johnson & Johnson and Stryker Corp have recalled several models of all-metal implants because of high failure rates -- meaning the patient needed another surgery to fix a problem, such as dislocation -- and set aside billions of dollars to cover patient claims. Neither company was immediately available to comment. Since the recalls, the use of all-metal implants, which were sold as being more durable, has declined sharply.
"Some basic science and some epidemiological studies have suggested that metal-on-metal hip replacements may be associated with an increased risk of developing cancer after total hip replacement and specifically with an increase in malignant melanoma and haematological, prostate, and renal tract cancers," the UK National Joint Registry (NJR) said in its annual report, which was released this week at the British Orthopaedic Association meeting in Manchester, UK.
The NJR, which collects data on joint replacement surgery and monitors the performance of the implants, said it used UK National Health Service Hospital Statistics data to test whether metal-on-metal hip implants are associated with an increased risk of cancer in the early years after hip replacement, compared with other surfaces, such as metal-on-polyethelene.
The NJR said it found no association seven years after implantation but that the devices should continue to be tracked as many cancers can take longer to manifest themselves.
"Due to the age of the NJR we could only assess the risk for the first seven years after hip replacement and are happy to report that we could not identify an increased risk of developing cancer," the NJR said.
"We must, however, point out that many cancers have prolonged latency after initial exposure to carcinogens and thus long-term follow up is needed to provide a definitive answer," it added.

NO U.S. TRACKING MECHANISM
Hundreds of thousands of people have all-metal hip implants. Since the recall, J&J faces thousands of lawsuits over the failure of its ASR model, which was pulled from the market, and more lawsuits tied to its Pinnacle all-metal device, which is still being used.
The United States has no independent registry tracking the performance of medical devices over time, and health regulators are still discussing how manufacturers should follow up on complaints over the all-metal implants.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has been monitoring problems with all-metal hip implants and convened a panel of outside advisers earlier this year to discuss their safety. The panel concluded there was little reason for surgeons to use these devices given the risks.
Last year, the FDA ordered implant manufacturers to conduct follow-up studies in cases in which an implant's failure could have serious consequences. Companies were ordered to take blood samples from patients to measure metal ion levels. That analysis has not been completed.
The NJR said its latest analysis continues to support conclusions it drew last year showing markedly higher failure rate with metal-on-metal implants.
In addition to J&J and Stryker, makers of all-metal hip implants include Smith & Nephew, Zimmer Holdings, Wright Medical and Biomet Inc.

(AP) ? Appealing to Rust Belt voters, President Barack Obama announced a new trade enforcement action against China on Monday, while Republican challenger Mitt Romney planned a greater emphasis on policy details that distinguish him from Obama to stop the incumbent's election momentum.

Romney's shift comes as Republicans openly fret about the state of their nominee's campaign and press him to give voters a clearer sense of how he would govern. In newly published polls, Romney has lost the edge he held over Obama as the candidate better able to handle the federal budget deficit and taxes.

Romney pollster Neil Newhouse attributed Obama's gains to the bump the president received overall after the Democratic National Convention in North Carolina this month. But on taxes, Newhouse acknowledged Romney's need to do more to distinguish his plans.

"I'm not sure that voters really understand the differences between the plans Mitt Romney has and Obama has," Newhouse said. "And I think that's one thing we're committed to trying to do in moving forward is defining the differences between the two candidates on taxes."

One recent line of criticism from Romney appears to have brought a quick response from Obama. The White House announced a move to stop Chinese subsidies of its auto industry ? four days after Romney launched an advertising campaign accusing the president of allowing American manufacturing jobs to be lost to the Asian power.

The issue hits home among working class voters in manufacturing swing states such as Ohio, where Obama has gained recently in polls and touted his new action Monday. The White House says more than 850,000 jobs in the state are related to the auto industry.

Obama told thousands gathered at a pavilion in Cincinnati's leafy Eden Park that Romney made money from companies that outsourced jobs to China while running the private equity firm Bain Capital. The crowd jeered. Obama responded, "Don't boo. Vote!"

"You can't stand up to China when all you've done is send them our jobs," Obama said. "You can talk a good game. But I like to walk the walk, not just talk the talk. And my experience has been waking up every single day doing everything I can to make sure that American workers get a fair shot in the global economy."

Romney responded in a statement accusing Obama of ignoring China for too long. The Republican promised to act from his first day in office to help U.S. businesses compete.

"Campaign-season trade cases may sound good on the stump, but it is too little, too late for American businesses and middle class families," Romney said. "President Obama's credibility on this issue has long since vanished."

Campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki said it takes "a special kind of chutzpah" for Romney to criticize Obama on China with his record at Bain.

Opinion polls since the political conventions show not only that Obama is leading in the key swing states, but a recent national poll shows he has taken over Romney's long-standing advantage on the question of whom voters view as most likely to restore the economy and create jobs. Still, the overall race remains narrowly divided.

Romney on Monday was targeting his economic message to Hispanics, a key voting bloc with whom Obama enjoys an advantage. The Obama campaign released an online video riffing on the "Extreme Makeover" television show, mocking Romney for trying to win over Hispanics even though the Obama campaign says the Republican wants to cut education and health care programs that would help them.

"Many Hispanics have sacrificed greatly to help build our country and our economy, and to leave for their children a brighter future," Romney said in excerpts released before his speech to the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce in Los Angeles. "Today, those sacrifices are being squandered by a president who cannot stop spending."

Romney said his test on federal spending would be whether a program is "so critical that it is worth borrowing money from China to pay for it."

The office of the U.S. Trade Representative announced Monday it has asked the World Trade Organization to intervene with China over illegal subsidies of exports in their autos and auto parts sectors. The U.S. says the practice puts American parts manufacturers at a competitive disadvantage and encourages the outsourcing of production to China.

Jobs in the U.S. auto parts sector dropped by roughly half between 2001 and 2010, while U.S. imports of auto parts from China have increased seven-fold, according to the Obama administration.

The administration is also escalating another case it brought against China at the WTO in July that accuses China of imposing unfair duties on more than $3 billion in exports of U.S. autos. The duties cover more than 80 percent of American auto exports to China, said the officials, who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss publicly details of the trade action before the president announces it.

The cases stem from the Interagency Trade Enforcement Center Obama set up earlier this year to target unfair practices around the world, particularly in China.

Obama and Romney began trading barbs on China late last week.

Romney released a television advertisement Thursday accusing Obama of "failing American workers" and ignoring unfair trade practices by China. In his weekly podcast Saturday Romney said that "in 2008, candidate Obama promised to take China 'to the mat.' But since then, he's let China run all over us."

Obama countered with a TV spot focused on its claims that Romney outsourced jobs to China while working in the private sector. His campaign also released a new Web video Saturday in which Obama deputy campaign manager Stephanie Cutter said Romney holds investments in Chinese companies.

Romney's campaign piled on Monday with two new spots: one outlining his plan for job creation and the other assailing Obama for a growing national debt.
