Sports journalists join 'Discerning Voters' to back President Mahama

Discerning Voters, a group of independent professionals of the National Democratic Congress, on Tuesday stated their commitment to rally undecided voters to ensure victory for the party in the December 2012 polls.

?We are committing to win 80% of undecided voters for the President through an ongoing peaceful, yet robust and massive strategy that will change the dynamics of Ghanaian politics.?

The Discerning Voters said this at a media briefing to inaugurate the Group in Accra.

Mr Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, a sports journalist and the Convener of the group noted that the group was inspired by President John Mahama's sense of maturity, humility, competence and continuous dedication to the needs of Ghanaians.

?If there ever was a man who has made such tremendous impression and impact as President of his country in just four months, then that man is President John Mahama, and surely this man deserves to continue in office as our President?

He noted that the group had begun massive campaign in villages to inform the electorate about what the NDC had to offer, adding ?we want to encourage you to join us to stand up for Ghana, stand up for truth and stand for President John Mahama?.

According to Mr Ampofo Ankrah, the decision to campaign for the NDC was not instigated by any form of financial gains, as speculated among a section of the public.

?So confident are we in the Better Ghana Agenda that many of us have resigned from our jobs and put our businesses on hold to ensure this humble desire by President Mahama to continue to save the ordinary Ghanaians??

Nana Yaw Agyemang, a television sports commentator, who also declared his support for President Mahama, stated that he had a mind of his own and therefore decided on what he considered to be right.

?I cannot be pushed around by anybody, neither can anyone influence me to do anything, but this is to set an example for those who are afraid to declare their stand. I believe President Mahama is the best person to lead the country.

Budget deficit nearly doubles year-on-year in September | Economy ...

The national budget deficit reached P34.854 billion in September, nearly twice the P18.501 billion a year earlier, as the government continued to spend for programs and boost revenues, the Department of Finance (DOF) reported Wednesday.

This brings the deficit in the first nine months of 2012 to P106.05 billion, well below the government's deficit ceiling for 2012 of P279 billion, or 2.6 percent of GDP, for this year.

Its current fiscal position gives Philippines enough space for to finance its projects, said Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima.

In September, revenues increased by 0.9 percent?to P105.309 billion, while expenditures rose 14.1 percent to P140.163 billion.

In the first nine months of the year, ?government raised P1.118 trillion in revenues ? 10 percent more than it raised in the same period in 2011; expenditures, meanwhile, grew by 14.5 percent to P1.225 trillion from P1.070 trillion.

?With the higher expenditure growth due to improving absorptive capacities of departments and agencies, we are again confident that government spending will again contribute significantly to economic growth in the third quarter,? said Budget Secretary Florencio Abad.

Collections

The Bureau of Internal Revenue took in P71.036 billion in September, a 6.7-percent rise from P66.547 billion int eh same comparable period. In the nine months to September, the BIR?s collections climbed by 12.6 percent to P772.468 billion from P686.260 billion.

BIR Commissioner Kim Henares said the bureau will likely reach an unprecedented P1 trillion in collections in 2012, though its actual target of P1.066 trillion will be harder to reach.

?Our aggressive efforts to improve tax compliance [have] consistently generated fiscal space to provide funding for the Aquino administration?s spending priorities,? said Purisima.

The Bureau of Customs also showed an improvement in its collections last month, with P23.208 billion or 2.6 percent higher year-on-year from P22.408 billion.

In the first nine months to September, the BOC?s collections increased by 9.8 percent to P213.656 billion from P194.607 billion.

The BOC?s target for 2012 is P347 billion.

Purisima said he hopes the Senate will approve a measure that would bring revenues from sin taxes to at least P40 billion a year.

?We have no reason to doubt the pronouncements of the acting chair of the ways and means committee, Senator Frank Drilon, that the Senate will maximize the health and revenue impacts of the reform of excise taxes on tobacco and alcohol,? he said.

The Senate will resume discussions on the bill next month. ? BM/VS, GMA News

Asian shares subdued by earnings caution

TOKYO (Reuters) - Asian shares were lacklustre with the corporate reporting season getting underway in the region, as investors stayed cautious after global shares faltered overnight on weak earning reports and outlook.

The MSCI index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan shed early gains on Tuesday to ease 0.1 percent, dragged down by a 0.3 percent decline in South Korean shares, while a 0.1 percent gain in Australian shares helped partially offset the downward pressure.

Seoul shares slipped ahead of quarterly results from domestic blue chip stocks, starting with POSCO , the world's fourth-biggest steelmaker, later in the day.

POSCO, in which Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway is a shareholder, will kick off the earnings season for major Asian steelmakers. It is likely to post a third consecutive loss, dogged by weak China demand and prices.

Hong Kong markets were closed for a holiday and will resume trading on Wednesday.

"Everybody knows earnings will be weak, but if companies' guidance is more cautious than markets expect, then there is a risk that the downside may be tested," said Tetsuro Ii, CEO of Commons Assets Management.

"While excessive risk aversion has softened, there is nothing to be positive about the global growth slowdown," Ii said. But he added any dip in markets will be a buying opportunity.

U.S. stock futures were down 0.1 percent to hint at a soft Wall Street open, but European shares will likely rise, with financial spreadbetters expecting London's FTSE 100, Paris's CAC-40 and Frankfurt's DAX to open as much as 0.3 percent higher.

U.S. stocks were weighed on Monday by heavy-equipment maker Caterpillar Inc slashing its 2012 forecast, but they eked out gains in a late-day bounce.

Japan's Nikkei average trimmed earlier gains and was up 0.2 percent.

The share market's gains stemmed from the yen's weakening due to expectations that the Bank of Japan will opt to ease monetary conditions further when its monetary board meets to review policy on October 30.

The dollar rose to 80.02 yen, its highest since July 6. The yen weakened to a 5-1/2 month low of 104.59 yen against the euro and a 1-month low of 82.68 against the Australian dollar.

Traders have said that sentiment towards the yen has been turning around in recent weeks, and yen selling gained momentum on Monday after the dollar/yen broke key technical resistances.

"Generally speaking, expectations for a BOJ easing help push the dollar up against the yen, but the effect on the economy from easing is limited. It's more to do with recent market flows which have been pointing to a weaker yen," said Hiroshi Maeba, head of FX trading Japan for UBS in Tokyo.

Maeba said the dollar may be capped around 80 yen in the near term but support appeared firm at 79.60-79.70 yen, and he expects the dollar to reach 82 yen by the end of the year.

On Monday, a slew of economic reports offered the latest evidence that Japan, the world's third-biggest economy, was struggling to sustain its momentum in the face of global headwinds and cooling demand and investment at home.

FED SEEN ON HOLD

Several central banks hold policy meeting this week, including the U.S. Federal Reserve, the Bank of Canada and the Reserve Bank of New Zealand. All of them are expected to keep rates on hold but may offer dovish statements, Barclays Capital said in a research note.

"We recommend staying engaged in risky assets in FX, taking advantage of the low volatility conditions being supported by central bank policy," it said.

The Fed is likely to hold off from taking fresh steps, opting to review the impact of the quantitative easing undertaken last month and keep a low profile before the November 6 U.S. election.

The euro steadied to $1.3056, drawing support from expectations of bailouts for Spain and Greece in coming weeks and also on comments by European Central Bank policymaker Joerg Asmussen, who reiterated that the bank's commitment to do everything in its power to show the euro is irreversible.

U.S. crude rose 0.2 percent to $88.83 a barrel but Brent inched down 0.1 percent to $109.33.

Asian credit markets were subdued, with the spread on the iTraxx Asia ex-Japan investment-grade index widening by 1 basis point.

Apple Could Phase Out iPad 2 Due to iPad Mini Launch

Revised tablet set to be announced tomorrow during Apple media event.

An?Evercore Partners?analyst believes Apple will phase out the iPad 2 following the launch of the iPad Mini.

Rob Cihra?said the firm could phase out the iPad 2 due the company's vision leaning towards "clearer product tiers".

Released back in March 2011, the iPad 2's Wi-Fi 16GB model is available at an Apple store for $399, while the Wi-Fi and 3G variant is priced at $529. Comparatively, the third-generation iPad retails at $499 for the 16GB Wi-Fi version, with the 64GB Wi-Fi and 4G model featuring a $829 price tag.

As for the price of the iPad Mini, its Wi-Fi 8GB model has a reported price tag of $322, while the 64GB cellular version will retail for $650.

The iPad Mini, which Apple has apparently ordered 10 million units of, is due for an official announcement tomorrow. A release date is apparently scheduled for a week later on November 2.

(AP) ? The third debate between President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney stands as the most-watched telecast ever on Fox News Channel.

The Nielsen company said Tuesday that an estimated 11.5 million people watched Obama and Romney tussle Monday night on foreign policy on Fox. The network's previous record was the 11.1 million who watched the second presidential debate last week and the Joe Biden-Sarah Palin vice presidential debate in 2008.

Nielsen did not immediately have an estimate on the total viewership for the debate on all the networks that showed it. Those are usually released later in the afternoon.

The debate ran in competition with Game 7 of baseball's National League Championship series and a Monday Night Football game.

Egypt prosecutor to probe election challenges

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's prosecutor general ordered Monday an investigation into allegations of irregularities and forgery in the presidential election, after the candidate who narrowly lost filed a complaint and said he remained in politics despite facing corruption charges.

Mohammed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood edged out Ahmed Shafiq to win Egypt's highest office in the nation's first freely contested presidential vote last summer. Shafiq left the country with his family to the United Arab Emirates soon after the results were announced, without explanation at the time. But he has since said he will continue his political career, pledging to return to Egypt soon and found a new party.

Litigation against Shafiq followed his departure, with a number of investigations and court cases accusing him of corruption during his long political career under former President Hosni Mubarak, ousted in a popular revolt last year.

Egypt has seen a rising number of legal disputes between political rivals in the days following the election, as the nation struggles with an increasingly polarized political atmosphere. Shafiq had always denied the corruption charges, saying they are politically motivated by his rivals.

His call for an investigation of the election results came a day after authorities froze his and his family's assets as part of a probe into his wealth? the latest legal move against him.

After the decision, he told Egyptian media from abroad that he will have a "fierce" response to allegations that aim to "smear" his reputation. He again denied the corruption charges and said he will contest the election results, calling the alleged rigging "a crime."

"For sure there was rigging (in the elections)," Shafiq told a private TV station late Sunday. "I had information that I was a winner. But by God's will and people's will, the decision turned out this way ... I had no doubt there was forgery during the election process."

Shafiq has previously complained that some ballots were forged, that invisible ink was used during voting, and that some Christians were prevented from casting ballots. He said the incidents favored Morsi.

In Sunday's interview with private broadcaster Al-Youm, Shafiq said he has evidence of rigging and vote buying by Morsi, claiming that previous investigations into the allegations had been unfairly stopped. In another interview, he said he was not an "easy" rival. "I am continuing my political career in spite of anyone," he said.

It was unclear what the probe ordered Monday could lead to, or whether the country's top job can now be challenged because of a criminal investigation. The president's office had no immediate comment on the new investigation.

The presidential election commission, whose decisions are unchallengeable, had earlier dismissed the same complaints from Shafiq after investigating them.

A member of the presidential election committee, judge Hatem Bagato, told the website of state-run Al-Ahram newspaper that an investigation into a criminal case is different from his panel's investigation.

"We will wait for the investigation by the general prosecution to take necessary measures. The committee has no relation with the case right now," Bagato said when asked if the president's job is now in jeopardy.

In a separate legal dispute, a flamboyant TV presenter, Tawfiq Okasha, who was cleared from earlier charges of insulting President Morsi and inciting violence against him, was slapped with a four-month sentence and a fine on similar charges.

Okasha will likely appeal the decision. The lawyer who filed the case, Ayman el-Tawil, said he presented evidence to the court of live programs during which Okasha offended Morsi, questioning his victory in the elections.

In one program, nearly a month after Morsi was sworn in, Okasha said that he considers Egypt has no president, el-Tawil said, reading from the evidence he presented to the court.

Arthouse, commercial cinema can't be separated: Filmmaker ...

Mumbai, Oct 21 (IANS) Filmmaker Prashant Rasailly?s second directorial venture ?Kathaa? has been screened Sunday at the ongoing 14th edition of Mumbai Film Festival and he feels that there is no divide between arthouse and commercial cinema.

He wrapped up ?Kathaa? shooting within 14 days. Shot at 12,000 ft altitude in Gyantok, Sikkim, the horror movie stars Saugat Malla, Usha Rajak.

?I personally feel that you can?t completely separate art and commercial films nowadays. It?s more of art ? for artistic films your commerce is involved and you can make money out of it, so it becomes commercial.?

?I really don?t have a clear picture about what is art and what is commercial at this time. If you make a good film, then any good film will do business. Artistic films can be commercial and commercial films can be made artistic,? he added.

Asked if he wants to make a typical commercial Bollywood film, he said: ?I don?t know what a typical Bollywood film is like as entertainment, comedy is there in each film. So if you talk about proper masala film right now, I am not much sure about that. But there is no harm in trying.?

?I think Bollywood films are entertaining millions of people. People like it, pay for it, so I think Bollywood has its own space,? he added.

Prashant, who hails from Sikkhim, debuted as a director with ?Acharya?, which was screened at the 13th edition of Mumbai Film Festival.

He says it is very satisfying when his films are showcased at festivals.

?Film festivals are good platform for people who have different ideas?at least film festivals puts you somewhere,? said the director who assisted Anurag Basu in ?Kites?.

?At festivals if you are recognised, it is the satisfaction that you get from your work. But at the same time, you also have to get returns of whatever you have invested in your film?If you get that back, you will be happy,? he added.

US and Iran: Could Romney be tougher than Obama? Unlikely

In the run-up to Monday?s debate between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney, the most disputed foreign policy issue hasn?t been Afghanistan, where roughly 68,000 US troops are still based in the fight against Al Qaeda, or the contentious decision by the Obama administration to withdraw US troops from Iraq.

As moderator Martha Raddatz said at the Oct. 11 vice-presidential debate, the biggest national security threat faced by the United States is now considered to be the Islamic Republic of Iran.

?Every American is less secure today because [President Obama] has failed to slow Iran?s nuclear threat,? Mitt Romney said at the Republican National Convention in August. The Republican candidate has since argued that Mr. Obama hasn?t been tough enough on Tehran, and he has vowed to institute a different, harsher sanctions program that will be sure to cripple the Islamic Republic.

But analysts, legal experts, and US-allied diplomats say that when it comes to sanctions on Iran, US legislation isn't expected to differ much from one administration to another. Short of conducting a unilateral military strike or declaring war against the Islamic Republic, a Romney administration would be faced with the same legislative options on Iran as President Obama, who has already administered them.

Obama vs. Romney 101: 3 ways they differ on Iran

Former President George W. Bush began implementing legislation for harsher financial sanctions against Iran during his last two years in office. After the 2008 presidential election, the Obama administration instituted and expanded those sanctions at a speed that has made current US sanctions policy on Iran the harshest in contemporary history. This leaves a potential new Romney administration with few policy alternatives.

?The only thing Romney can really do to get to the right of Obama on Iran policy is to say he'd bomb Iran if elected president, or would actively promote and pursue a policy of regime change,? says Karim Sajadpour, a senior associate at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. ?Given the misgivings Americans have about the Iraq war, I don't think those are winning talking points for him.?

Since Obama became president in 2009, his administration has used a carrot-and-stick approach with the Islamic Republic, practicing a policy of limited engagement while boosting the implementation of Bush-era financial sanctions against Tehran and enacting new, tighter financial restrictions.

Iran?s economy began feeling the bite of new US and United Nations sanctions during the last two years of former President Bush?s second term in office. When Obama became president, the US Treasury Department upped the ante on Iran sanctions, accelerating their implementation and obtaining concrete commitments from US allies and private international entities to institute them as well.

Obama?s administration has also been tougher on US allies, particularly in Europe, flanking traditional diplomacy with direct pressure for collaboration on Iran policy, according to interviews with western European diplomats.

?A lot of what has come out on sanctions is a result of what Congress is passing,? says Erich Ferrari, a DC-based lawyer specializing in US Treasury legislation and author of the first comprehensive guide to US transactions regulations on Iran. ?What Obama did was continue Bush-era policies and put them on steroids.?

Western European diplomats say Obama has been less willing than the Bush administration to engage in ?multilateral conversations? with Europe on sanctions, opting instead to directly pressure some governments and private institutions to agree with and implement Washington?s unilateral sanctions laws.

As a result, US financial sanctions against Iran ? now considered the harshest in recent history ? have during the last four years been integrated into the global banking system much more quickly and deeply.

The US now sanctions foreign companies that do not significantly cut or completely stop purchases of Iranian oil, and it penalizes banks engaging in financial transactions with the Islamic Republic.

Coupled with a European embargo on Iran's oil imposed in July, the country?s oil exports have fallen by more than 50 percent since last year, forcing Tehran to continue reducing oil production as a result of declining demand. This summer, Iraq out-produced Iran for the first time in more than twenty years, according to data from the International Energy Agency.

US banking sanctions have also hindered Tehran from accessing its foreign exchange reserves held overseas, constraining the ability of its central bank to defend the value of Iran?s national currency, which has fallen by roughly 80 percent since last year.

The European Union intensified its sanctions against Tehran last week, formally barring all trade and transactions with Iranian banks (except those with specific EU government permission), and tightening restrictions against Iran?s central bank, the National Iranian Oil Company, and the National Iranian Tanker Company.

In addition to sanctions, Iran has dealt with breaches to its security.

Since January 2010, Israel?s spy agency, Mossad, has reportedly conducted covert operations leading to the assassinations of at least four Iranian nuclear scientists, according to intelligence officials cited anonymously in a Time Magazine report. A wave of damaging cyberattacks targeting Iran?s nuclear-fuel centrifuges started in mid-2009.

?After this level of sanctions, the only thing left would be a real blockade of all communications,? says Roberto Toscano, who served as Italy?s Ambassador to Iran for five years until 2008.

Aside from a military strike on Iran by either the US or Israel, which could drag Washington into a regional war, the only policy option left beyond sanctions is diplomacy, Ambassador Toscano says, adding: ?If we think sanctions alone will make them cave, this is not going to happen.?

Sacramento Roofing Contractors and Flat Roofing Systems | Yancey ...

Your local Sacramento roofing contractor is very knowledgeable when it comes to flat roofing systems. A flat roof has the job of keeping your structure dry and safe from the elements. There are several flat roofing technologies on the market today, some of which are better than others.

The benefits of a flat roof include being easy to build, and very economical, over their pitched roof counterparts. If you have a very large building to roof, for example, a flat roof is probably your only option, unless you engineer the building to support the additional weight of a pitched roof.

The Uppers of Flat Roofs

HVAC equipment can be installed on a flat roof, instead of on the ground. Furthermore, a flat roof can be used as an extension of the inside space, for a roof top deck, penthouse, or even as a green roof, which is very popular these days in urban areas. The economic benefits of a flat roof, along with their ecological advantages make them appealing. Oil base asphalt shingles for sloped roofs end up in landfills each year, which can be very detrimental to our environment. Flat roofs don?t use shingles.

The Downers of Flat Roofs

There are downsides to having a flat roof as well. Water and snow can just sit on the roof, and while water can be properly drained, snow may gather until spring melt-off. An engineer would need to plan a high load for such roofs in colder climates, so they could handle the weight of that snow.

Standing water, on top of the roof, can cause leakage. A slight pitch is needed, along with several drains, to take care of this problem. Tapered insulation to direct the flow of water towards the drains can fix the retention issue. It is important to have adequate drain systems to avoid any possible damage to the structure, house or building.

Experience in Low Sloped Roofing is Important

It is important for a roofing contractor to be experienced in low sloped roofs, especially in the Sacramento area, where roof pitches are quite shallow. A Sacramento roofing contractor will be able to give you a good quote on what it will cost to re-roof your home, or whether you can get by with a simple repair instead.

Obama Accuses Opponent of 'Romnesia'

President Obama launched a stinging new attack on challenger Mitt Romney Friday, mockingly accusing him of forgetting the positions he took in the Republican primaries when he was casting himself as a ?severely conservative? candidate.

To the cheers and laughter of supporters at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va., the president dubbed this forgetfulness ?Romnesia.?

He added, ?If you come down with a case of Romnesia and you can?t seem to remember the policies that are still on your website or remember the promises you?ve made, here?s the good news -- Obamacare covers preexisting conditions. We can fix you up. We?ve got a cure.?

He accused Romney of trying to shift away from promises to cut taxes for the wealthiest Americans and oppose contraceptive care as well as stepping away from his opposition to coal when he was governor.

?Now that we?re 18 days out from the election, Mr. Severely Conservative wants you to think he was just kidding,? said the president. ?He?s forgetting what his own positions were.? He said Romney lately has been "backtracking and side-stepping.?

Obama left no doubt that he?s going after female voters at the swing-state rally, highlighting women?s health issues and the need to make sure women are treated fairly in the workplace.

"Governor Romney wants to take us to policies more suited to the 1950s,? Obama told supporters, adding, ?He may not have noticed, but we?re in the 21st century.?

The president touted expanded health care coverage for women under the health care reform law. Of access to contraception, the president said, ?that?s not just a health issue, that?s an economic issue.? ?

Obama also warned that a Romney presidency could mean a more conservative Supreme Court, and reminded supporters that he put two women on the bench.

?You want a president who has already appointed two unbelievable women to the Supreme Court of the United States,? Obama said, noting not a man who has to look through a binder to find qualified female candidates. Mitt Romney has caught flak for remarking that he looked through ?whole binders full of women? in order to appoint his staff at the Massachusetts Governor?s office.

Romney addressed the president?s new line of attack at an evening rally in Daytona Beach, Fla. ? though he refrained from directly referencing ?Romnesia.?

?They've been reduced to petty attacks and silly word games,? Romney said to thunderous applause from a crowd of thousands, some of whom were in town for the ?Biketoberfest? motorcycle festival. ?Just watch it. The Obama campaign has become the incredible shrinking campaign.?

Romney, who focused for much of his speech on the struggling economy and his plan for job growth, attacked Obama for failing to lay out plans for a second term in office. ?They have absolutely no agenda for the future,? he said.? ?No agenda for America. No agenda for a second term. It's a good thing they won't have a second term.??

That brought an immediate response from Obama campaign spokesman Danny Kanner, who said that "just part" of Obama's second-term agenda is to "double our exports, create a million manufacturing jobs, cut oil imports in half, recruit 100,000 math and science teachers, train 2 million workers at community colleges, and reduce the deficit by more than $4 trillion."

Women more likely to die from myocardial infarction than men

ScienceDaily (Oct. 17, 2012) ? Women are more likely to die from a myocardial infarction than men, according to research presented at the Acute Cardiac Care Congress 2012. The gender gap in mortality was independent of patient characteristics, revascularisation delays and revascularisation modalities. Women also had longer treatment delays, less aggressive treatment, more complications and longer hospital stays. The study was presented by Dr Guillaume Leurent from the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire in Rennes, France.

The Acute Cardiac Care Congress 2012 is the first annual meeting of the newly launched Acute Cardiovascular Care Association (ACCA) of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC). It takes place during 20-22 October in Istanbul, Turkey, at the Istanbul Lufti Kirdar Convention and Exhibition Centre (ICEC).

"Previous studies on ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) have shown that women have a worse prognosis, possibly due to longer management delays and less aggressive reperfusion strategies," said Dr Leurent. "Therefore we used data from ORBI, a prospective registry of 5,000 STEMI patients, to find out whether there were any gender differences in the management of STEMI."

The ORBI registry (Observatoire R?gional Breton sur l'Infarctus du myocarde; Brittany regional observational study on myocardial infarction) has been ongoing since July 2006, and consists of STEMI patients admitted within 24 hours of symptom onset to the 9 interventional cardiology units in the Brittany region of France. The registry aims to assess the quality of management of acute myocardial infarction.

STEMI patients are included into the ORBI registry during the pre-hospital or hospital phase. The diagnosis is made by an emergency physician (in the ambulance or emergency room) or by the interventional cardiologist. Patients are excluded from the registry when the diagnosis of STEMI in the ambulance or emergency room is not confirmed by the interventional cardiologist -- this happens in just 1% of cases.

For the current study, the researchers analysed data from 5,000 patients included in the ORBI registry over a 6-year period. They found that 1,174 patients (23.5%) were women. Women STEMI patients were older, with an average age of 69 years compared to 61 years for men (p<0.0001). Women had more frequent hypertension, less dyslipidemia and less current smoking.

The researchers found significant differences in the management and outcome of STEMI patients according to gender.

Women had longer median delays between symptom onset and call for medical assistance (60 vs 44 minutes, p<0.0001) and between admission and reperfusion (45 vs 40 minutes, p=0.011). "Delays of management are significantly longer in women, hence they have a longer ischemic time during which the heart's blood supply is reduced," said Dr Leurent. "And reperfusion strategies to restore blood flow are significantly less aggressive -- with less fibrinolysis, and fewer coronary angiographies performed."

Intra-hospital mortality was higher in women (9.0% vs 4.0%, p<0.0001). The researchers used 3 adjustment models to determine whether the higher intra-hospital mortality among women was solely due to gender or whether it was due to other factors such as patient characteristics (age, hypertension, smoking, etc) or management.

Dr Leurent said: "This higher intra-hospital mortality among women significantly persists when adjusted for patient characteristics, for revascularisation delays (onset of symptoms to reperfusion therapy) and for revascularisation modalities."

Women had more STEMI complications including atrial fibrillation (7% vs 3%, p<0.0001) and longer hospital stays (7.6+4 vs 6.7+4 days, p<0.0001).

Women received significantly less of the recommended treatments at discharge. Specifically, they received less antiplatelet agents, beta blockers, ACE inhibitors and statins. They also received less cardiovascular rehabilitation (27% of women vs 47% of men, p<0.0001).

Dr Leurent said: "These results suggest that women need to be more vigilant about chest pains and request medical help quickly to reduce ischemic time."

He added: "Women may take longer to call an ambulance when they have chest pains because they don't believe it can be a myocardial infarction. Most women believe myocardial infarction is a male problem."

"Many doctors still think myocardial infarction is a male problem," continued Dr Leurent. "Campaigns are needed to increase awareness in doctors and the public about the problem of STEMI in women."

He concluded: "Doctors need to be more careful in the management of STEMI in women to further reduce ischemic time. This means adopting more aggressive reperfusion strategies and treating women the same as men. These actions by patients and doctors will reduce the current gender gap in mortality."

Iraq says signs contract for 18 F-16 fighter jets

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraq has signed a new contract to buy its second set of 18 F-16 fighters from the United States, part of a deal to purchase 36 of the jets to rebuild its air force, Iraq's acting defense minister said on Thursday.

Baghdad signed an initial deal for the first set of 18 jets in September last year valued at roughly $3 billion and those aircraft are scheduled to be delivered by September 2014 with the second batch due four years later.

"We signed the contract ... The (new) contract is no different from the first contract in terms of the technical and financial details," acting Defense Minister Sadoun al-Dulaimi said after a meeting U.S. officials in Baghdad. "This handover will be finished in 2018."

Duliami said Iraq was also talking with U.S. officials about buying air defense systems and Apache helicopters.

A U.S. embassy spokesman in Baghdad said the U.S. government had presented Iraq with a letter of acceptance for the second set of fighters and were awaiting confirmation of agreement.

"The United States would welcome Iraqi acceptance as another important step in our growing bilateral security assistance relationship," the spokesman said.

Iraq has had no real air force since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein. Washington has signed around $12 billion in recent arms deals with the Iraqi government to build up its armed forces.

Baghdad, which has also signed military contracts with Russia and the Czech Republic this month, says it will not be able to defend its airspace until 2020.

The new U.S. deal and the purchase Czech jets come as Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki faces pressure from Washington to prevent Iran transporting arms through Iraqi airspace to help Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Improve productivity by getting into the right ... - Dynamic Business

Are you one of the majority of small business owners who?d like more work/life balance? Wouldn?t we all? Read on for tips on how to use ?the third space? to get you there.

Bill Gates famously said in the early nineties, ?with the invention of the personal computer the average person will gain 30 percent more leisure time?. How did that pan out for you? Yeah, thanks Bill. If you look at the research, people today actually have 33 percent less leisure time than someone in the early nineties. Why? Because the world has become faster. We used to date, now we speed date, we used to read, now we speed read, we used to walk, now we speed walk. Today you can even do a class called ?speed yoga? and pick up a copy of the One Minute Bed Time Story on your way home.

Just look at innovation to see how rapid things have become. Years ago, new technology followed a pattern of 10:10. 10 years to develop it and 10 years for it to go mainstream. Video, CDs, plasma TVs, all followed this pattern. Today the ratio is moving towards 1:1, one year to develop it and one year to go mainstream. Think YouTube.

You can describe working in business today by the formula. 1/2 x 2 = 3. Half the number of people, doing twice the amount of work, expected to get three times the result. This is causing us to change the way we work as previously the competitive advantage was to work harder and fit more in. This strategy is now irrelevant. We can?t work any harder! We can?t fit anymore in! Time management is dead!

So what is the new competitive advantage? It is the ability to transition rapidly between the different roles, environments or tasks that make up our day. But transition in a way where we can be resilient to, and leave behind, what we have just done, and rapidly shift into a mindset that aligns with the next task, role or environment.

I discovered this new area of research while standing in the green room at the Sydney Convention Centre. It was 20 minutes before I had to walk out and present to 5,000 people, when my phone rang. I can?t clearly recall what happened next, only the sentence that told me my best friend had just died unexpectedly. I was shattered? I couldn?t believe it was true. Over and over the sentence played in my head. For a moment, I totally forgot where I was and certainly forgot what was waiting for me through those doors.

I glanced at my watch and the hands screamed back at me that I only had minutes before 5,000 sets of eyes would be on me. In that moment I had to squash the desire to run away and pull myself together. Stepping out in front of those clinical probing lights I was greeted by a sea of faces. I not only managed to hold it together, it was one of my best presentations. Then I walked off stage, sat in my car, put my head in my hands and sobbed like a baby.

Following this, I started to wonder how I was able to go from that phone call to successfully completing a very challenging task. It was clearly something I did in the transition between getting the phone call and walking out on stage. I began to study how people transition from one activity to another. I came across some research showing that there is very little difference between the top 100 male tennis players in terms of speed, accuracy and power during the point. Where the elite players differed was in what they did in between the points. In the ?third space? they were able to reflect on the previous point and put it behind them. Next they relaxed deeply to calm their mind and conserve their energy. Finally they focused their mind and emotions to be at their best for the next point. It was not what they did during the point, it was what they did in between the points that made them the best.

Then it struck me that similar to tennis players moving from point to point, our lives are made up of moving between different spaces. The first space is the role/environment/task you are in now; the second space is the role/environment/task you are about to transition into. For example, you may go from checking emails at your desk to sorting out a personal disagreement, or you may go from an internal meeting where it is about the strategy of your business to an external meeting where it is about their world. Each space requires us to be different things to different people.

This realisation inspired me to write a book investigating the importance of the transitional gap in between what we do. I call this gap the Third Space.

The research for the book blew my mind. The best salespeople used the third space between calls to get over the previous call and move into the next one with optimism and enthusiasm. The best leaders used the Third Space between meetings to compose themselves and get their headspace right and intentions clear for the next meeting.

All our research showed that it?s not what we do, it?s what we do in between what we do that is most important. After hundreds of interviews and many research projects over five years, I discovered that there were three key elements to effective transitions:

Step 1, Reflect: This step is where people reflected on the previous space but reflect in a way where they look at what they have achieved and how they had gotten better. This helps to shift our mindset into a more positive one and stops us carrying any baggage from the previous space. Humans have a deep need to understand how they are improving and achieving. If you regularly practice Reflect you will drive up your level of happiness. All too often when we transition out of a space we only focus on what has gone wrong and what we are unhappy with.

Step 2, Rest: This phase is simply where people paused and cleared their mind. Rest was a chance for them to catch their breath before the next activity. Depending on their circumstances the amount of time for rest changed dramatically. Sometimes it was a deep breath between meetings, or a yoga class before coming home. People felt that the clarity of thought that came from Rest helped them be more composed in the next space. New research in the area of stress management is showing that short regular pauses in our day on a consistent basis leads to a dramatic drop in stress, anxiety and depression.

Step 3, Reset: This is the final part of the Third Space where you prepare for the next space. Reset is used to get clear on what is your intention for the next space and what are the exact behaviours you need to exhibit to make the intention a reality. Due to our hyperkinetic society where we feel that we are on a roller coaster stuck on repeat, we often lose sight of the outcome we are after. The Reset phase allows us to get clear, heightening our sense of control. The articulation of behaviour is also crucial. If we want to change and grow it starts with altering behaviours.

People who practiced this technique in their day reported a remarkable increase in happiness and performance and reductions in stress. This led me to ask the question ? could the Third Space work for work/life balance?

Surveys consistently report that small and medium business owners are unhappy with their level of balance and would like more. So I partnered with Deakin University on a research project where we took a mix of 250 small business owners and measured their mood and behaviour in the home. The initial survey did not paint a pretty picture. Only 29 percent said that they came home in a good mood, with a positive mindset and exhibited constructive behaviour. We then asked them to perform three simple behaviours in the Third Space between work and home:

Reflect: This is where they reflected on and analysed the day. However they were encouraged to only focus on what they had achieved and what had gone well for them.

Rest: They took time to relax and unwind. Being calm and present, allowed their physiology to recover from the stressful day.

Reset: This is where they became clear about their intention for the home space and articulated the specific behaviours they wanted to exhibit. In other words how they wanted to ?show up? when they walked through the door.

After a month of the participants applying these principles, we saw a whopping 41 percent improvement in behaviour in the home. When interviewed, they conveyed that the improved interactions they had with friends and family led to a greater feeling of overall balance.

If you are a business owner needing to have greater control over you life and improve your relationships, apply the principles of the Third Space to each transition you make. Go forth and Reflect, Rest and Reset.

Are young people who join social media protests more likely to protest offline too?

ScienceDaily (Oct. 17, 2012) ? Among adults who use social media such as Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, and blogs for political purposes, 42% are under the age of 30. A case study of the controversial Budget Repair Bill in Wisconsin explored whether young adults who use social media are more likely to engage in offline protests. The article is available free online on the Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking.

Timothy Macafee, University of Wisconsin-Madison, compared the relationship between information-seeking behaviors online versus expressive engagement online (defined as using social media as a "soapbox" to share personal views and political events and issues) and actual participation in political protests.

"Individuals use social media primarily for informational and expressive purposes," Macafee concludes. College students used social media to gain information related to the protests in this case study, but that activity did not affect their offline behavior; whereas, "expressive" political social media use encouraged offline protest participation.

"Using social media for information gathering has quite different implications for real world behavior than does use of social media to express oneself (through blogs, tweets, etc.)," says says Brenda K. Wiederhold, PhD, MBA, BCIA, Editor-in-Chief of Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking, from the Interactive Media Institute, San Diego, CA. "As young people utilize social media for information gathering more than traditional means, such as television or newspapers, those wishing to influence opinion and individual behavior should pay heed."
