Venerable TI-84 calculator may finally get a color screen

12 hrs.

If you took?a calculus class in the last 20 years, chances are you used a graphing calculator at some point, possibly one of Texas Instruments' TI- devices. The classic series has at last entered the 21st (some would say 20th) century with a brand new color screen.

Graphing calculators have somehow managed to avoid progress in the screen department. Despite the many benefits a color screen brings to displaying graphs and functions, the popular models from TI and Casio remained monochrome for years.

Casio's first color calculator arrived in early?2011, and TI introduced a new line called the Nspire CX later that year, but the classic TI series seemed to be left behind. But there were rumors of a full-color TI-84 device, and now?the company has started lending color devices?out to classrooms to test.

The TI-84+ C Silver performs the usual graphing functions, and a user?at the Cemetech calculator?forums, where the device first showed up, reports that not much has changed. That said, it has a higher display resolution than the old TI-84+ and of course the color screen will be useful for distinguishing lines, axes, variables and other important data.

There's no word on pricing or availability, though if the devices are being lent out they are likely in a nearly finished form.

Petraeus' biographer a military reservist, scholar

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Paula Broadwell first met fellow West Point graduate David Petraeus in the spring of 2006, when she was a graduate student at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government.

He was a lieutenant general working on a counterinsurgency manual that would be tested during his command in Iraq. The university had invited him to give a speech.

Broadwell was in the Army Reserve after being recalled three times to active duty since the Sept. 11 attacks to work on counterterrorism issues and intended to return to active duty or get into the policy world, according to the preface of the Petraeus biography she would later write with a Washington Post editor.

Petraeus, who held much-praised military commands in Iraq and Afghanistan, resigned Friday after admitting he had an extramarital affair, a disclosure that ended the retired four-star general's civilian career as director of the CIA.

He carried on the affair with Broadwell, now 40, according to several U.S. officials with knowledge of the situation who spoke anonymously because they were not authorized to discuss publicly the investigation that led to the resignation. The FBI discovered the relationship by monitoring Petraeus' emails, after investigators were alerted that Broadwell may have had access to his personal email account, two of the officials said.

Broadwell wrote in the preface to "All In: The Education of General David Petraeus," published by Penguin in January, that while at Harvard, Petraeus passed along his card and offered to help her academic work on leadership.

"I later discovered that he was famous for this type of mentoring and networking, especially with aspiring soldier-scholars," Broadwell wrote, adding that "I took full advantage of his open-door policy to seek insight and share perspectives."

Broadwell is a research associate at Harvard's Center for Public Leadership and a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of War Studies at King's College London, according to her biography on Penguin's website. According to the Charlotte (N.C.) Observer, she grew up in North Dakota and moved to Charlotte more than three years ago with her husband, a radiologist, and their two young sons.

The book began as research for her dissertation, a case study of Petraeus' leadership. It evolved into an authorized biography written with Washington Post editor Vernon Loeb after President Barack Obama put Petraeus in charge of Afghanistan in 2010.

Two years earlier, she wrote in the book's preface, while visiting Washington he had invited her to join him and his team for a run along the Potomac River.

"I'd earned varsity letters in cross-country and indoor and outdoor track and finished at the top of my class for athletics at West Point; I wanted to see if he could keep stride during an interview. Instead it became a test for me," she wrote. He eventually increased the pace "until the talk turned to heavy breathing, and we reached a 6-minute-per-mile pace. It was a signature Petraeus move. I think I passed the test, but I didn't bother to transcribe the interview."

In the Army Reserve, she specialized in military intelligence, spending time at the U.S. Special Operations Command and the FBI Counterterrorism Task Forces before pursuing an academic career, according to her Penguin bio. She "lived, worked, or traveled in more than 60 countries during more than 15 years of military service and work in geopolitical analysis and counterterrorism and counterinsurgency operations," her bio states.

Broadwell made multiple trips to Afghanistan, with unprecedented access to Petraeus, and also spent time with his commanders across the country.

When Petraeus left the military and took the job at the CIA, Broadwell kept in contact with him and sometimes was invited to his office for events such as his meeting with actress Angelina Jolie.

"History has yet to fully judge Petraeus' service in Iraq and Afghanistan, his impact on the U.S. military and his rank among America's wartime leaders," Broadwell wrote in the preface. "But there is no denying that he achieved a great deal during his 37-year Army career, not the least of which was regaining the strategic initiative in both wars" after Sept. 11, 2001.

"His critics fault him for ambition and self-promotion. I will note in the pages that follow that he is driven and goal-oriented, but his energy, optimism and will to win stand out more for me than the qualities seized on by his critics."

With the book done, Broadwell told friends she was returning to her dissertation, using part of her research on Petraeus to complete her doctorate.

Tips Crucial Steps to End an Emotional Affair for Good | | The ...

Posted by admin on Rating 9.0 ?Outstanding

Are you struggling with emotional affair recovery? Does your wayward spouse need to know how to end emotional affair?

If your trust has been shattered by emotional infidelity, you?re probably wondering how your spouse can ever earn it back?
This article is specifically about the actions that the wayward wife needs to take in order to completely sever the extramarital relationship and undeniably show you, the faithful husband, that you?re her first priority.

How to End Your Wife?s Emotional Affair in 6 Steps

None of these steps are optional. If your unfaithful wife cannot do these things for you, then something is wrong and emotional affair recovery is out of the picture.

At the same time, if you really want your marriage to move forward then you need a threshold over which you say ?okay, I believe you and I love you, let?s move on?. In other words, your wife needs to prove to you that she?s done with the emotional affair, but you also need to know how to forgive an emotional affair.

Are we on the same page? Remember, these steps are for your wife, not for you.

Great! Let?s get started:

Step 1. She Must Accept Responsibility, Even if Marriage Wasn?t Perfect

The most common excuse for an emotional affair is ?you never pay attention to me?. Conversely, the most common reason that women give for falling in love with another man is ?he paid attention to me and he ?gets? me?.

However, an unhealthy marriage is NOT an excuse to cheat. Furthermore, an emotional affair will CREATE distance in your marriage.

In other words, it?s no coincidence that your spouse suddenly seem inattentive when there is another man being very attentive. It is literally impossible to have a healthy marriage while one spouse is in love with someone else.

If your marriage was so bad that your wife felt completely unloved and rejected, that is not a problem to solve through an affair. Instead, as with any problems in marriage, you bring it out into the open and address it for what it really is.

Your wife must admit that she was having an emotional affair, she must accept responsibility for it, and she should show remorse for what she?s done to you.

Step 2. Sever the Relationship? Period

Once your wife has taken responsibility for her infidelity, the next step to end an emotional affair is a complete severance of the extramarital relationship.

It doesn?t matter if it?s an old high school friend she?s had for 20 years that only recently turned into something more, or a coworker that she?s only known for six months? The relationship is over.

Period.

If your wife is unwilling to let go of the relationship, or if she wants to remain friends with the other man, then that is an unacceptable problem. If a ?friend? is more important than recovering your marriage, then what is that supposed to tell you as the husband? It means she doesn?t really want to end the emotional affair.

Your wife must be willing to sever the relationship completely if she is serious about ending the emotional affair. The next 2 steps will address how to do that.

Step 3. The No Contact Letter

A No Contact Letter is exactly what it sounds like? A hand written statement (important!) from your wife to the other man that the relationship is over.

This letter shouldn?t be emotionally charged. It is a simple, firm statement that the relationship is over, that it will not begin again, that it has had an adverse effect on her relationship with you, and that her marriage is now her top priority.

This step is very important both for you and for your wife. It should give you peace of mind that your wife is willing to do this, and it gives your wife the peace of mind and security that comes with letting go. Ideally, the No Contact Letter is the nail in the coffin of the emotional affair.

Step 4. Physically Get Away

Naturally, to permanently end an emotional affair, your wife needs to physically get away from the other man.

This could be as drastic as your whole family moving to the other side of town, or as simple as de-friending him on Facebook and deleting his number. It could mean that your wife needs to change positions at her job, or get a new job entirely. You might need to find a different church or a different group of friends.

It doesn?t matter; she MUST cut him out of her life completely. Whatever it takes is consequence of the emotional affair.

There are two reasons that this is so important: One, it will be very difficult for her to get over the emotional affair if she continues to be exposed to him, and two, it will be nigh impossible for you to rebuild trust with your wife when you know she?s still occasionally spending time with him.

Step 5. Accept Transparency (and Don?t Lie About it)

Your wife needs to accept that you will require full transparency for the next few weeks to the next few months.

This means a few things. You need to be able to?

  • Access her e-mail account
  • Access her Facebook account
  • Read through her text messages
  • Listen in on phone conversations
  • Monitor her whereabouts throughout the day

In situations where your wife has lied to you before, you may even require cell phone tracking to monitor her calls, text messages, and whereabouts. Or you might require computer key logging to monitor what she?s doing online and who she?s talking to.

Drastic? Yes.

Necessary? Yes.

Although not everybody needs to go to the full extent (i.e. cell phone and computer tracking).

Step 6. Consider Marriage Counseling (Optional)

It?s no secret that I do not like marriage counseling. Far too many couples rely on marriage counseling as the default medicine for marriage problems.

Let me be clear: marriage counseling is only a good idea when?

  • Both spouses truly desire a better marriage, but have a singular problem that is difficult to resolve.
  • There is infidelity involved and you need a safe-place to say exactly what?s on your mind and work through your trust issues.
  • There are psychological problems inhibiting your marriage, such as bipolar disorder or anxiety. In this case, independent counseling is usually a better place to start.

So, if you are really struggling to get over the trust issues you have with your wife, marriage counseling may be a good place to address those. Independent counseling may also be helpful.

Congratulations! Next Comes Forgiveness?

If you?ve made it this far, go ahead and pat yourself on the back. If your wife has been willing to learn how to end an emotional affair with you, the future of your marriage looks very bright. It means that your wife is genuinely dedicated to renewing your marriage.

Even though learning how to forgive an emotional affair is difficult, I can tell you that every single couple that gets through it finds their marriage better than it?s ever been. That is, IF you can get through the emotional affair recovery.

So, look to the future! There is hope, and you can still find ultimate happiness in your marriage.

I highly recommend you read through the rest of Emotional Affairs 101, especially the article about how to forgive an emotional affair (linked above). Forgiveness and severance are the one-two punch that will save your marriage.

I sincerely hope that you have found this guide on how to end an emotional affair helpful.

With much manly love

Even yeast mothers sacrifice all for their babies

ScienceDaily (Nov. 8, 2012) ? A mother's willingness to sacrifice her own health and safety for the sake of her children is a common narrative across cultures -- and by no means unique to humans alone. Female polar bears starve, dolphin mothers stop sleeping and some spider moms give themselves as lunch for their crawly babies' first meal.

Now an unexpected discovery at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) shows that even yeast "mothers" do it, giving all to their offspring -- even at the cost of their own lives.

As described this week in the journal Science, the UCSF scientists found that the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae ensures the health of its budding offspring by pushing essential internal structures known as mitochondria into them.

Mitochondria are the mini powerhouses of living cells, supplying the chemical energy all yeast and higher life forms need to survive. Like all cellular life, yeast need these structures to survive. In the new paper, the UCSF team describes how yeast cells ferry just the right amount of mitochondria along a network of protein tracks and molecular motors into the young yeastlings, which bud off their mother like mini-me's.

But what surprised the researchers, led by Wallace Marshall, PhD, UCSF associate professor of biochemistry and biophysics and UCSF postdoc Susanne Rafelski, PhD, was how yeast mothers continued to give generous amounts of their mitochondria to their offspring even when it meant hastening their own death.

"The mom will pump in as many as [the bud] needs," said Marshall. "The bud gets more and more as it grows, and mom doesn't get any more."

UCSF, which includes a top-ranked medical center providing patient care and many ongoing clinical studies, also is one of the world's leading institutions pursuing fundamental research in basic biomedical fields, including molecular biology, biochemistry, physiology, biophysics and genetics -- work that offers insight into the ways normal cells function and what sometimes goes wrong in diseases such as cancer, AIDS, diabetes, multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer's.

How Cells Divide

The classic picture of cell division -- a process known as mitosis -- is an even splitting whereby one cell gives birth to two identical copies. Scientists have always reasoned that during this classic division, the mitochondria were likewise evenly split -- the same way that both sides of a pepperoni pizza cut in two would have half the toppings.

But not all cells divide evenly. Human stem cells, for instance, often divide into two cells that look and behave very differently. Some cancer cells do this as well. There is a growing sense in the biomedical field, Marshall said, that understanding how a cell moves its mitochondria around during such uneven divisions may hold some of the clues to understanding aspects of stem cell or cancer biology.

Working with yeast, the UCSF team developed sophisticated microscope and computer techniques that allowed them to track the movement of mitochondria within cells. If these structures had divided randomly, they would expect to find fewer in the bud than in the mother (since the buds are smaller than the mother).

What they found instead was that the yeast mothers gave a consistent amount of mitochondria to their offspring at each generation, and so over time they had fewer and fewer of the organelles themselves. The price they paid to ensure their offspring was healthy was steep: The yeast mothers would eventually give away too many of the mitochondria to survive and begin to die off after 10 generations. By 20 generations, most of the mothers had died.

Mutant forms of yeast, which were much more stingy in giving up their mitochondria, lived much longer.

Voting booth hoax spreads on Facebook

10 hrs.

A hoax telling voters?what to do while in the?voting booth?is spreading on Facebook; the best thing you can do is ignore it and whatever you do,?don't pass it on.

The post that's being shared says for those voters who are Democrats to "not select the button 'all Democrats' first, because Barack Obama will be excluded from the vote. However, if we choose 'Barack Obama' first, and then 'all Democrats' he will earn our votes!!!"

The trouble is, this is the opposite of what voters should be doing, at least?in certain very specific?cases.?

In some states, "choosing the party first on a voting machine can lead to all of the candidates of your preferred political party being chosen ? including the presidential candiate," wrote Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant for Sophos Security, on the company's Naked Security blog.

"That could mean if you get confused and subsequently make a presidential selection for a second time, you could uncheck your vote for the president."?

A "typical" message Facebook users might see is this one, said Cluley:

Despite the stress-inducing all-caps warning ??"PLEASE PAY CAREFUL ATTENTION TO THIS!" ??voters should in fact?pay no attention at all.?

Facebook, contacted by NBC News, declined to comment on the ruse.?

It's likely to be only one of many digital?attempts to confuse voters on Tuesday, so keep an extra wary eye on any emails or text messages you receive, as well as on?the social media sites, like Facebook, that you visit. And when you're in the voting booth itself, take your time,?follow the instructions, and double-check your choices as you go.
