BlackBerry booster Alicia Keys blames hacker for iPhone Twitter update

'1-tweet hacker' posts, er, Drake song lyrics...

BlackBerry's recently appointed Global Creative Director Alicia Keys has blamed a hacker for posting an update to her Twitter account using an iPhone.

This is all a bit awkward because the musician was hired to plug BlackBerry?s new smartphone model, Z10, less than three weeks ago. She said she had been tempted away from BlackBerry by "hotter, sexier phones, something with more bling" in the past but was now back on board with BlackBerry, and using its smartphones exclusively.

However a tweet from her account on 11 February was sent from an iPhone. The tweet, which was later deleted, read:

Started from the bottom now were [sic] here!

Later Keys quickly repudiated the ungrammatical tweet, which quoted lyrics from a song by Drake, stating it was the work of a rascally rascal.

What the h*ll?!!!! Looks like I?ve been hacked? I like @Drake but that wasn?t my tweet :-(

Just one day before, a photo from Keys' account showed the musician in her dressing room at the Grammys with not just one, but two iPhones in the frame, as depicted in a post on Sophos' Naked Security blog here. Of course we can't be sure the phones were for the singer's use.

Kimberly Truong writes: "Would a hacker that has gone to the trouble of hacking an account of such a well-known figure with access to *11 million followers* really only send one tweet with just a song lyric?"

Truong adds: "This story reminds us of a previous incident when Kim Kardashian claimed her Twitter account had been hacked." Kardashian apparently posted a tweet which read: "Twitter please help me get my password back! How is it that I can tweet from my cell but my home computer says wrong password!#HACKED". ?

New frontiers in trauma and stroke recovery

Cynthia Thompson, a world-renowned researcher on stroke and brain damage, will discuss her groundbreaking research on aphasia and the neurolinguistic systems it affects Feb. 16 at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). An estimated one million Americans suffer from aphasia, affecting their ability to understand and/or produce spoken and/or written language.

Thompson, Northwestern's Ralph and Jean Sundin Professor of Communication Sciences, will participate in a 10 a.m. media briefing on "Tools for Regaining Speech" in Room 103 of Boston's Hynes Convention Center. The "Teaching the Brain to Speak Again: New Frontiers in Trauma and Stroke Recovery" panel takes place in Room 304 from 3 to 4:30 p.m.

For three decades, Thompson has played a crucial role in demonstrating the brain's plasticity, or ability to change. "Not long ago, the conventional wisdom was that people only could recover language within three months to a year after the onset of stroke," she says. "Today we know that, with appropriate training, patients can make gains as much as 10 years or more after a stroke."

Thompson has probably contributed more findings on the effects of brain damage on language processing and the ways the brain and language recover from stroke than any other single researcher. Her particular interest is agrammatic aphasia, which impairs abstract knowledge of grammatical sentence structure and makes sentence production and understanding difficult.

Among the first researchers to use functional magnetic resonance imaging to study recovery from stroke, Thompson found that behavior treatment that focused on improving impaired language processing affects not only the ability to understand and produce language but also brain activity.

She found shifts in neural activity in both cerebral hemispheres associated with recovery, with the greatest recovery seen in undamaged brain regions within the language network engaged by healthy people, albeit regions recruited for various language activities.

"It's a matter of 'use it or lose it,'" Thompson says. "The brain has the capacity to learn and relearn throughout life, and it is directly affected by the activities we engage in. Language training that focuses on principles of normal language processing stimulates the recovery of neural networks that support language."

Thompson will discuss research she will conduct as principal investigator of a $12 million National Institutes of Health Clinical Research Center award to study biomarkers of recovery in aphasia.

Working with investigators from a number of universities, Thompson will explore the role blood flow plays in language recovery in chronic stroke patients. In addition, she will conduct cutting-edge, exploratory research using eye tracking to understand how people compute language as they hear it in real time. Eye-tracking techniques have been found to discern subtle problems underlying language deficits in acquired aphasia.

In a landmark 2010 study, she and colleagues discovered two critical variables related to understanding brain damage recovery. They found that stroke not only results in cell death in certain regions of the brain but that it also decreases blood flow (perfusion) to living cells that are adjacent (and sometimes even distant) to the lesion.

Until that study, hypoperfusion (diminished blood flow) was thought only to be associated with acute stroke. Her team also found that greater hypoperfusion led to poorer recovery.

PRETORIA, South Africa (AP) ? Oscar Pistorius held his head in his hands and wept openly in court Friday as prosecutors said they would pursue a charge of premeditated murder against the Paralympic superstar.

Pistorius was formally charged at Pretoria Magistrates Court with one count of murder for the slaying of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, a model and budding reality TV show contestant. The 30-year-old was shot multiple times and died at Pistorius' upmarket home early Thursday morning.

Prosecutor Gerrie Nel said Friday in court it was premeditated murder, indicating the prosecution would file that more serious charge, upgraded from murder.

The double-amputee athlete's arrest and murder charge had already left South Africa stunned after Steenkamp's death on Valentine's Day at Pistorius' house in a gated community in an eastern suburb of South Africa's capital, Pretoria.

Following the hearing, Pistorius' family and his London management company issued a statement calling into question the criminal charge the 26-year-old athlete faces.

"The alleged murder is disputed in the strongest terms," the statement read. The statement did not elaborate.

The statement also said Pistorius wanted to "send his deepest sympathies to the family of Reeva."

"He would also like to express his thanks through us today for all the messages of support he has received ? but as stated our thoughts and prayers today should be for Reeva and her family ? regardless of the circumstances of this terrible, terrible tragedy," the statement read.

Those who knew Pistorius, including a former girlfriend, also weighed in on social media.

Trish Taylor, mother of Pistorius' ex-girlfriend Samantha Taylor, wrote on Facebook: "I'm so glad Sammy is safe and out of the clutches of that man."

But another ex-girlfriend, Jenna Edkins, defended Pistorius in messages Friday on Twitter.

"All I am saying is let him speak, let his side be heard without jumping to conclusions," Edkins wrote. She offered "love and support" to the Pistorius family and wrote: "I have dated Oscar on and off for 5 YEARS, NOT ONCE has he EVER lifted a finger to me or made me fear for my life."

Prosecutors said Friday that they would argue the history-making Olympic athlete ? the first amputee to run at the games ? had planned Steenkamp's killing. It sent South Africans reeling further as their national hero, and a global role model in overcoming adversity, was set to face accusations that he intentionally gunned down his girlfriend.

South Africa's tabloid Citizen newspaper had the headline "Blade gunner?" Friday morning, playing on double-amputee athlete Pistorius' well-known nickname of "Blade Runner" because of his carbon fiber running blades.

Pistorius stood with his face in his hands as he broke down in tears on his first appearance at the Pretoria Magistrates' Court. Chief Magistrate Desmond Nasir delayed Pistorius' bail hearing until next Tuesday and Wednesday and ruled that Pistorius would be held at a police station in Pretoria until then. Police have said they oppose the granting of bail.

A solemn Pistorius entered the court wearing a gray suit and blue tie and initially appeared composed. When he broke down in tears, his brother, Carl, reached out a hand and placed it on his shoulder. Pistorius' father, Henke, was in the court and later reached over to comfort him as well.

More than 100 people packed Friday morning into Courtroom C at the Pretoria Magistrates Court, including dozens of photographers and videographers. Nasir ruled that no recordings of court proceedings would be allowed in the case.

Police said Friday investigators also conducted an autopsy on Steenkamp's body. Lt. Col. Katlego Mogale said the results of the autopsy would not be published.

Pistorius earlier left a police station, his jacket completely covering his head as he got into a police vehicle. He was holding what appeared to be a white handkerchief in one hand. He was led by officers to a police van outside the Boschkop Police Station in eastern Pretoria, where he had been questioned on Thursday and had spent the night in custody.

A policeman was also seen carrying a handgun in a plastic forensic bag outside the Boschkop station. It was believed to be the weapon used to shoot and kill Steenkamp.

Police said the victim was shot four times at Pistorius' villa in a gated community. Officers found a 9 mm pistol inside the home.

Pistorius made history at the London Olympics last year when he became the first double-amputee track athlete to compete at any games. He didn't win a medal but did make the semifinals of the 400 meters and the final of the 4X400 relay, propelling the world's best-known Paralympian to the level of an international track star and one of the world's best-known sportsmen.

But police hinted at a troubled lifestyle away from public scrutiny for the runner Thursday when they said there had previously been domestic incidents at Pistorius' home.

French firm possible culprit in horsemeat scandal

An investigation has identified a French meat-processing firm as a likely culprit in the horsemeat scandal that has enraged consumers across Europe and implicated traders and abattoirs from Cyprus to Romania.

Separately, British police investigating alleged mislabeling of beef products arrested three people on Thursday at facilities in Wales and Yorkshire that had handled horsemeat and were raided by police earlier, British media reported.

No further details on the British arrests were immediately available.

The French probe into how horsemeat found its way into ready meals sold across Europe found that the Spanghero firm labelled meat as beef when it knew what it was processing may have been horse, the government said on Thursday.

Spanghero, based in the town of Castelnaudary near Toulouse in southwest France, could have its operating license revoked and will face legal action if the suspicions are confirmed, France's consumer affairs and farm ministers told a news conference.

"It would seem that the first agent in this chain to label the meat 'beef' was indeed Spanghero," Consumer Affairs Minister Benoit Hamon said. "This was either a very big mistake or a deception for profit."

There was no indication that a Romanian firm supplying meat to Spanghero had mislabeled what was in fact horsemeat, he said, arguing that Spanghero could not have failed to notice the meat it was importing was much cheaper than beef.

"The investigation shows Spanghero knew the meat labelled as beef could be horse. There was a strong suspicion," he said.

Spanghero denied the accusations and said it firmly believed what it was selling was beef. "There is an inquiry under way which will determine whether there was negligence or not," a spokeswoman said.

The privately-owned company, founded by two brothers, sons of 1970s French rugby star Walter Spanghero, produces thousands of tons of processed meat, sold in nondescript blocks, and jars of regional dishes like cassoulet from its premises in Castelnaudary.

Horsemeat profits
The scandal, which has triggered recalls of ready meals and shattered confidence in Europe's vast and complex food industry, erupted last month when tests carried out in Ireland revealed that meat in some "beef" products was up to 100 percent horsemeat.

The British government and the European Union have called for a high-level meeting to investigate, and the issue will be on the agenda of a Feb. 25 farm ministers meeting.

The European Commission has proposed increased DNA-testing of meat products to try to establish the scale of a scandal that has exposed just how many countries a portion of mince may have traveled through before ending up in a frozen lasagna.

EU legislation states that horsemeat can be sold in meat products on the condition it is declared on the label. Member states are responsible for proper enforcement of the rules.

Hamon said the French investigation found that Spanghero had generated a profit of $733,800 over six months by selling cheap horsemeat as beef in a supply chain that reached through 28 companies in 13 countries.

He also wagged his finger at another French firm, Comigel, which used processed meat from Spanghero to make frozen "beef" ready meals, saying it should have noticed when it thawed the meat blocks that they did not look and smell like beef.

Comigel said in a statement it paid market prices for what it thought was beef. It said it had alerted the authorities as soon as it became aware of a problem and had filed a legal complaint as a victim of fraud.

It also said its frozen meat had not been thawed for inspection before entering its factory for cooking, so its staff would not have noticed anything unusual in its appearance or smell.

As regulators across Europe raced to test food products, Britain's Food Standards Agency said six horses slaughtered in Britain that tested positive for the drug phenylbutazone were exported to France and may have entered the human food chain.

Phenylbutazone, known as bute, is an anti-inflammatory painkiller for sporting horses which is banned for animals intended for human consumption as it is potentially harmful.

Asda, one of Britain's biggest supermarkets, said it was recalling its beef bolognese sauce after a preliminary test result suggested the presence of horse DNA in the product.

Just slide 1.25 inch webbing through the underside slit and press down on the clamp to secure webbing in place. Attached end tip to the other side to give a finished look. Just use a pair of pliers and a cloth when applying the belt tips to the webbing. The cloth is meant to cover the end tip while squeezing the pliers to protect it from getting scratched. Or you can use the key fob pliers that have rubber tips which you won't need a cloth to cover the end tip. You can find the key fob pliers in our shop.

Bridgeport makes Utopia oil find

Project partner Bounty Oil & Gas said on Wednesday the Utopia-14 development well had encountered ?very good oil shows? in sandstones at the target Murta zone reservoir in a 12-metre interval measuring from 1006 metres to 1018 metres downhole.

The well reached total depth on Wednesday morning and was currently conducting a wiper trip in preparation to run electric logs, the company added.

This latest result follows news that Bridgeport had hit two to three metres of net reservoir at the Utopia-13 earlier this month.

Bounty chief executive Philip Kelso said the fact that Utopia-14 had proved oil near the top of the Utopia East closure ?opens up a significant part of the 200-square kilometre Utopia lease for additional oil resources at the Murta zone above the oil water contact.?

The Utopia oilfield is operated by Brideport with a 60% stake while Bounty holds the remaining 40% interest.

Welcome to the BCM21892. It may sound like every other piece of Broadcom silicon we've covered, but it actually represents an important move from a company that is eager to start pecking at Qualcomm's lunch. First and foremost, this is a 4G modem for flagship phones rather than any budget fare, with support for LTE-Advanced and data speeds of up to 150Mb/s. To deliver that kind of performance, carriers either need 20MHz of contiguous bandwidth -- a rarity these days -- or they need carrier aggregation technology, which allows a modem to exploit separate chunks of bandwidth simultaneously. The BCM21892 boasts that spec too, not to mention compatibility with most of the popular network standards in use around the world, from the TD and FD types of LTE right down to HSPA+, TD-SCDMA and EDGE/GSM. Finally, through a combination of small transistors (28nm) and clever algorithms, the chip is claimed to reduce power consumption by 25 percent compared to rival devices, and also to take up less space -- potentially leaving more room for other goodies (Broadcom suggests NFC). The chip is still only at the the sampling stage, however, so the folks at Qualcomm shouldn't have too much to worry about until at least 2014.
